Stokes hundred leads England to 669, lead India by 311 runs

Manchester, Jul 26 (PTI) Riding on a hundred by skipper Ben Stokes, England posted an imposing 669 in their first innings to take a massive 311-run lead against India on the fourth day of the fourth Test here on Saturday.
Stokes (141, 198 balls) put to rest his two-year long drought to make his 14th Test hundred as England marched on to a 600-plus total.
Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah finally conceded 100 runs or more in an innings for the first time in his 48th Test.
For India, Ravindra Jadeja took four wickets.
With the Old Trafford pitch showing increasing signs of variable bounce, Indian batters' task is cut out in the second innings.

Turning to India's young Test captain Shubman Gill, Kapil urged fans and critics alike to be patient. 'Give him time. This is his first series, he will commit mistakes and there will be many positives over the period of time, he will learn. There is no problem if he is learning. There will be mistakes, but he is learning from his mistakes — that is very important.' Kapil highlighted that this Indian team is still in a transition phase, and Gill, though new to leadership, will grow into the role. 'This is a young team, they are getting the opportunity to play and in the coming days these players will win. It is just a new team. Any new team in the world takes time to adjust. Gill is a new captain, and he will learn a lot and I think this series will be a learning step.

Nihal Sarin qualifies for Esports World Cup 2025 through Last Chance Qualifier, joins Arjun Erigaisi in the main event
GM Nihal Sarin became only the second Indian after Arjun Erigaisi to qualify for the Esports World Cup (2025) happening in Saudi Arabia's capital Riyadh. After failing to qualify at EWC through the two qualifiers, Nihal had to play through the Last Chance Qualifier in Riyadh, where he reached the finals of the Winner's Bracket after beating Russia's Andrey Esipenko, thus qualifying for the main event. Apart from Nihal, Anish Giri, Javokhir Sindarov and Levon Aronian also qualified for the EWC to complete the 16-player field for the main event. Nihal, representing Indian esports organisation S8UL, will now take on Sindarov in the final of the LCQ. GM R. Praggnanandhaa came agonisingly close to qualifying for the EWC but Anish Giri handed him a tough loss in the Armageddon in their match-up. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday shared his vision for making the country a sporting superpower and hailed the Indian contingent for winning close to 600 medals at the recent 'World Police and Fire Games'. In the 124th episode of his monthly radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat', PM Modi said that the government's 'Khelo Bharat Niti 2025' has been highly appreciated. 'The goal of this policy is clear - to make India a sporting superpower,' he said, adding that startups related to sports, whether they be sports management or manufacturing, will be helped in every way. He said the policy pays special attention to villages, the poor and daughters. 'Schools and colleges will now make sports a part of everyday life,' he said. 'Imagine how much strength the mission of self-reliance would gain when the youth of the country would play with self-made racket, bat and ball. Friends, sports create team spirit. This is the path to fitness, self-confidence and building a strong India. So play a lot, blossom a lot,' he said. Talking about the biennial World Police and Fire Games, which concluded on July 6 in Birmingham, Alabama, PM Modi said India's uniformed heroes are making headlines not just in service, but also in sports. 'This time, the tournament was held in America, and India created history in it. India won close to 600 medals. We reached the top three out of 71 countries. The hard work of those uniformed personnel who stand for the country day and night, paid off. These friends of ours are now holding the flag high in the sports field as well. I congratulate all the players and the coaching team,' he said. The PM also tested the knowledge of the audience by asking, 'Do you know which is the biggest sporting event other than the Olympics?
