Euronews21 hours ago
It's 'game on' in Saudi Arabia: For the next seven weeks, Riyadh's Boulevard City will be a gamer's paradise, as well as home to a festival-style experience for fans.
2000 elite players from 200 clubs and more than 100 countries are here.
There's a wide-range of competitions being played - from first-person shooter to mobile multiplayer battle games.
Ralf Reichert , Esports World Cup Foundation's CEO told Euronews:
"It's the sheer scale that's unheard of. Esports is just at the start of its tenure and it's there to grow to become one of the biggest sports in the world in the next decades."
For the hosts, Faisal bin Bandar bin Sultan, the president of the Saudi Esports Federation shared his enthusiasm with the assembled media:
"One of the most spectacular things about gaming is your first initiation to someone, your first meeting of someone, is not who they are as a colour, skin, religion, background, race, gender. It is an avatar in the game and therefore their skill."
The Esports World Cup also attracts plenty of star power. Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo is the tournament's official ambassador and American pop star Post Malone headlines the opening ceremony of this giant gaming festival.

According to the Media Monitoring Institute, Sviatek's statement reached as many as 25 million internet users outside Poland within a few days. The video, which was posted on Wimbledon's official TikTok, triggered a wave of comments from internet users. Polish fans posted comments praising Świątek's taste. "Best summer food of all time," wrote one fan. And Polish Prime MInister Donald Tusk posted a picture of himself in front of a TV set with Sviatek's post-final interview showing - and a bowl of strawberry pasta topped with cream. However, many foreign internet users expressed a different opinion. In one comment, the dish was described as 'crimes against spaghetti'. Trump and Infantino's 'bromance' at the Club World Cup

He was seen bursting into laughter when Donald Trump announced his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America." The only prominent sports executive present at the US president's inauguration speech on January 20, Gianni Infantino also showered Trump with praise during the ceremony, describing, for example, the "incredible honor and privilege" of being invited to Washington. The FIFA head is sparing no effort to win the favor of the occupant of the White House, who is reciprocating. For several months, the two men have been publicly displaying their cordial relationship and exchanging lavish compliments. When the Italian-Swiss official praised Trump as a leader the world needs, Trump returned the favor, describing his "special friend" as "a winner" and "an excellent guy." As a symbol of their good rapport, the head of FIFA and the US president plan to sit side by side at the Club World Cup final between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on Sunday, July 13, at the MetLife Stadium near New York City. Together, they would present the winner's trophy for this competition, held across 11 American cities. Five days earlier, Infantino announced the opening of a FIFA office in Trump Tower, New York, alongside Eric Trump, the US president's second son.
