5 standouts from Day 6 of Patriots training camp practice

USA Today3 days ago
The New England Patriots were back on the field for their second training camp practice in pads on Tuesday.
They had some great news on the injury front with Christian Gonzalez watching practice from the sideline with a sleeve on his leg. The All-Pro cornerback went down with a hamstring injury on Monday, but it reportedly isn't expected to cause him to miss any games.
His absence has opened the door for other players to climb the depth chart in the defensive backfield.
On the offensive side of the ball, veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs came alive after a couple of quiet practices, and one second-year wideout had the play of the day.
Here were the five standout Patriots players from Day 6 of training camp practice:
CB D.J. James
With both Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis sidelined, second-year cornerback D.J. James has stepped up in a big way. On Tuesday, he led the Patriots' defense with two pass break-ups, including one against veteran wideout Kendrick Bourne and another against Javon Baker. James is starting to look like a legitimate dark horse to make the final roster.
C/G Jared Wilson
Rookie interior offensive lineman Jared Wilson had an impressive stretch where he went 3-0 in one-on-one pass rushing drills. The former Georgia standout has worked in at center and left guard with no true home along the offensive line yet. His involvement as a rotational piece shows the team is intrigued by his talent. It's worth noting he worked with the starting offense at left guard during 11-on-11s on Tuesday.
WR Stefon Diggs
Four-time Pro Bowl wideout Stefon Diggs had an impressive day of practice with three receptions and two touchdowns. Quarterback Drake Maye delivered a perfectly placed dot over rookie safety Craig Woodson into Diggs' awaiting arms. The chemistry between Diggs and Maye has continued to come together on the practice field in a natural progression.
WR Javon Baker
The play of the day belonged to second-year wide receiver Javon Baker, who tracked a ball at its high point and snatched a reception over cornerback Marcellas Dial. He even showed the concentration to get both feet inbounds for the would-be score. If Baker can eliminate some of the mental mistakes, he could make a push in the ongoing wide receiver competition at training camp.
K Andres Borregales
Kicker John Parker Romo put some pressure on rookie Andres Borregales by going 6-of-6 kicking in the first padded practice on Monday. However, the young kicker answered the challenge by matching Romo's Day 5 performance by going 6-of-6 kicking from areas ranging between 30 and 52 yards on Day 6. The kicking battle between Romo and Borregales is starting to heat up.

Panthers CB Jaycee Horn says this WR has been 'impossible to guard' in training camp

"He's been impossible to guard..." 🤯Pro Bowl CB Jaycee Horn says Hunter Renfrow is making plays out of the slot — and that Jimmy Horn Jr.'s "game-changing speed" has stood out ⚡️@heykayadams | @jayceehorn_10 | @Panthers #KeepPounding The comeback story of Carolina Panthers wideout Hunter Renfrow just keeps getting better and better. Following this morning's outing at training camp, cornerback Jaycee Horn joined the set for Friday's episode of Up & Adams. When asked by host Kay Adams about the team's receivers, the Pro Bowl defender had quite the praise for a few guys—including Renfrow . . . Renfrow, who missed the entire 2024 campaign due to ulcerative colitis, signed a one-year deal with the Panthers this past spring. Since then, the 29-year-old veteran has impressed many members of the organization, including head coach Dave Canales and quarterback Bryce Young. Canales highlighted Renfrow's performance following last Saturday's practice. "It's just the Hunter Renfrow I remember," Canales told reporters. "He looks healthy. I think everyone who's watched football over the last four or five years remembers what he looks like, and he's really playing in top form right now. I'm really excited to have him here and to have his family, which is right down the road here after this practice, just to be able to connect with him. And it's a great story that's unfolding right before our eyes." Despite being in a pretty crowded wide receiver room, Renfrow has defied the odds and made himself an early favorite for Carolina's initial 53-man roster. And if that's the case, then Horn won't have to worry about guarding him in the reps that actually count. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.

WATCH: Nico Collins makes impressive toe-tapping TD over All-Pro CB in training camp

Nico Collins is going to be a problem for opposing cornerbacks if he's winning this easy against an All-Pro in practice. The Houston Texans Pro Bowl receiver nearly shut down the internet after making a dazzling toe-tapping grab at the back of the end zone in practice while going one-on-one against Derek Stingley Jr. Here's a look at the clip below. Collins, who posted his second 1,000-yard season with the Texans, was on pace to lead the league in every receiving category for five weeks before a hamstring injury sidelined him for five games. That factored into the Texans' limitations in the passing game, but it didn't stop Collins and the offense from doing enough to get to 10 wins and secure a second division title. Looking to build off their success in the wild-card round victory over the Chargers, Collins sees a revamped offense coming together in the early stages of training camp. 'Get your playmakers the ball.. I feel like Nick [ Caley] really making that an emphasis, that YAC," Collins said. "That's what you wanna do, get that ball in your hand & go score. I ain't trying to be on that field 10 plays, tryna be 1 & done.' The Texans return to practice on Saturday morning.

Dallas Cowboys All-Pro Micah Parsons requests trade

File Photo by Ian Halperin/UPI | License Photo Aug. 1 (UPI) -- All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons requested a trade from the Dallas Cowboys, he announced Friday on social media. Parsons is set to make $24 million in 2025. The star linebacker posted a lengthy note about the request on his X account just hours after reports surfaced about a potential split between the star pass rusher and NFC East franchise. "Yes, I wanted to be here," Parsons wrote. "I did everything I could to show that I wanted to be a Cowboy and wear the star on my helmet. I wanted to play in front of the best fans in sports and make this America's team once again. The team my pops and I grew up cheering for way up in Harrisburg, Pa. "Unfortunately, i no longer want to be here." Parsons, 26, joined the Cowboys as the No. 12 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and quickly turned himself into one of the best defensive players in the league. He earned Pro Bowl selections in each of his first four seasons. He also was named the 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year and was a first-team All-Pro in 2021 and 2022. The star outside linebacker, who totaled 52.5 sacks through the first 63 appearances of his NFL career, said Friday that he attempted to re-sign with the Cowboys over the last several off-seasons, but a deal never materialized. He said he met with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in March and engaged in a "back and forth" about an extension. Parsons did not believe that was a formal negotiation and said he informed Jones that his agent would reach out. Parsons claimed that the Cowboys then told his agent that a deal was "pretty much already done." He said his agent told the team that wasn't the case and the Cowboys "decided to go silent" in regard to future negotiations. "Not one demand has been made by my agent about money, years or anything else," Parsons wrote. "Still, I stayed quiet, but again, after repeated shots at myself and all the narrative, I have made a tough decision. "I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys. My trade request has been submitted to [chief operating officer and co-owner] Stephen Jones personally."
