John Torode ‘blindsided' by MasterChef sacking 'he learnt about off BBC News'

Yahoo8 hours ago
MasterChef presenter John Torode reportedly discovered he had been sacked from the show after reading about it on the BBC News website.
The 59-year-old chef was said to be 'heartbroken' after the BBC and production company Banijay confirmed his departure following allegations of racist language, which surfaced in the wake of the Gregg Wallace scandal.
A source told The Sun: 'John had no idea. He was blindsided.
'John's agent received a call 11 minutes before the statements went out and hadn't had a chance to call him,' the insider added.
'He read about it on the BBC News website. Obviously he's heartbroken. He feels he's been made a scapegoat off the back of the Gregg Wallace report.'
Torode alluded to not having been told prior to media reports appearing in a lengthy statement on Instagram on Tuesday evening, saying: 'Although I haven't heard from anyone at the BBC or Banijay - I am seeing and reading that I've been 'sacked' from MasterChef and I repeat that I have no recollection of what I'm accused of.
'The enquiry could not even state the date or year of when I am meant to have said something wrong.
'I'd hoped that I'd have some say in my exit from a show I've worked on since its relaunch in 2005, but events in last few days seem to have prevented that.'
Another source told the Sun that Torode had already planned to step down from the show at the end of this week.
The Australian-born chef started presenting MasterChef alongside Wallace in 2005.
In his statemnt Torode said Celebrity MasterChef and two Christmas specials which he recently filmed 'will be my last'. It is not clear if the BBC will air these shows.
He went on: 'Personally, I have loved every minute working on MasterChef, but it's time to pass the cutlery to someone else. For whoever takes over, love it as I have.
'I will watch fondly from afar as I now focus on the many other exciting projects that I have been working towards. My tummy will be grateful for a rest after 20 years of eating, but what a joy it has been.'
On Monday night, Torode confirmed he was the subject of an allegation of using racist language that was upheld as part of a review carried out by law firm Lewis Silkin into the alleged behaviour of his co-presenter Wallace.
Then on Tuesday, BBC director-general Tim Davie condemned the 'serious racist term' used by Torode, after it was announced his contract on MasterChef will not be renewed.
In an interview with BBC News on Tuesday, Davie said he saw the situation as an opportunity for the corporation to 'reset'.
He said he was not directly involved with the matter but was told about the recommendation not to renew Torode's contract and was 'happy that the team were taking action'.
He went on: 'It's really important that we are taking this seriously. It's a reset where we make sure that people are living up to the values we expect across the board.'
Asked exactly what Torode said, Davie replied: 'I'm not going to give you the exact term, because I think, frankly it was serious racist term, a serious racist term, which does not get to be acceptable in any way, shape or form.'
A statement from production company Banijay UK released earlier said: 'In response to John Torode's statement, it is important to stress that Banijay UK takes this matter incredibly seriously.
'The legal team at Lewis Silkin that investigated the allegations relating to Gregg Wallace also substantiated an accusation of highly offensive racist language against John Torode which occurred in 2018.
'This matter has been formally discussed with John Torode by Banijay UK, and whilst we note that John says he does not recall the incident, Lewis Silkin have upheld the very serious complaint.
'Banijay UK and the BBC are agreed that we will not renew his contract on MasterChef.'
The Lewis Silkin report, commissioned by Banijay UK, found 45 out of 83 allegations against Wallace were substantiated, alongside two standalone allegations made against other people, including one for using racist language.
Torode confirmed on Monday night he was the person alleged to have used racist language but said he had 'no recollection of the incident' and was 'shocked and saddened' by the allegation.
'I have absolutely no recollection of any of this, and I do not believe that it happened. However, I want to be clear that I've always had the view that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment,' he said.
'I'm shocked and saddened by the allegation as I would never wish to cause anyone any offence.'

Emma Watson Is Banned From Driving for 6 Months After Speeding

Unfortunately, magic can't get Harry Potter star Emma Watson out of a recent blunder. According to the BBC, the actor is temporarily banned from driving after a speeding incident in Oxford last summer. In July 2024, Emma was caught going 38 miles per hour in an area where the speed limit was 30. Because she reportedly had nine points on her driver's license before speeding, she's facing the consequences nearly a year later. On Wednesday, July 16, she was ordered to pay a fine of £1,044 (or $1,396) and was banned from driving for six months at High Wycombe Magistrates' Court in the U.K. Though she didn't attend the five-minute hearing, the BBC reports that her lawyer, Mark Haslam, relayed the message that Emma 'is in a position to pay the fine.' The Bling Ring star has maintained a relatively low-key profile over the years, as she stepped back from the spotlight to pursue a higher education. On top of earning a degree in English Literature from Brown University in 2014, Emma is currently studying at Oxford University for a master's degree in Creative Writing. While her last movie role was in Greta Gerwig's 2019 remake of Little Women, Emma has also made her directorial debut for Prada's Paradoxe fragrance campaign in August 2022. 'When Prada asked me to be the face of their new fragrance campaign, I asked if I could direct it,' she shared on Instagram at the time. 'Months later, and I'm able to share the results of the faith they shared in me, with all of you. I can't wait to share this piece of my art, and hope that you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.'

‘The Odyssey' IMAX 70mm Tickets To Go On Sale A Year Ahead In US/UK

While the tagline for the movie is 'Defy the Gods' it could equally be 'Defy the Online Queues' as ... More tickets are about to go on sale for 'The Odyssey'. The hype for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has officially begun. Not content with releasing a teaser trailer, which is currently running exclusively in cinemas ahead of Superman, Variety has revealed that The Odyssey tickets will go on sale on July 17th, 2025, a full year to the day ahead of its anticipated release date. This is the first time a studio has put tickets for sale this early in advance, but considering Nolan has a loyal army of fans large enough to sack a city, there certainly won't be any shortage of uptake. Many of these are enthusiasts for the IMAX 70mm format that Nolan champions, and the tickets will only be on sale for those venues. While early rumors revealed that AMC would be selling tickets at its IMAX 70mm-capable Lincoln Square theater in New York, the UK-based IMAX Vanguard group suggests that the BFI IMAX in London will offer tickets too. While the Manchester Printworks in the north of England has also teased the movie, it has not indicated it will be offering tickets for sale at the time. Traveling for IMAX There are only around 30 venues worldwide that still have IMAX film projectors, and for Oppenheimer, many fans were willing to board a plane to travel to a screen that would let them see the film in Nolan's preferred format. Considering that The Odyssey is the first feature film to be captured entirely on IMAX film cameras, it seems likely airlines will be doing even better business this time round. The Odyssey will depict the story of the ancient tale attributed to the ancient Greek poet Homer, which tells the tale of Odysseus (played by Matt Damon in the new film), returning home after the Trojan War. We have already had a glimpse of Tom Holland as Odysseus's son Telemachus in the trailer, speaking to an unknown character played by Jon Bernthal. The movie will also feature Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, and Lupita Nyong'o as well as Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron. The live-action Legend of Zelda movie has cast its princess and hero

Nintendo has revealed the two lead actors for its live-action The Legend of Zelda movie. Bo Bragason is playing the title character, Princess Zelda, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is taking on the role of Link, series creator Shigeru Miyamoto announced on X. The performers are around the right ages for their parts — Bragason was born in 2004 while Ainsworth is 16. These are by far the biggest roles to date for both actors, but they each have plenty of experience in front of cameras. Bragason has appeared in Disney+ fantasy series Renegade Nell and BBC crime drama The Jetty, as well as the very enjoyable horror movie Censor and Final Fantasy XV. As for Ainsworth, he voiced Pinocchio in Disney's 2022 live-action remake and appeared in Mike Flanagan's Netflix series The Haunting of Bly Manor. Miyamoto said he is "very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen." Sony Pictures is co-producing the film with Nintendo, while Wes Ball (the Maze Runner series) is directing it. The Legend of Zelda is on track to hit theaters on May 7, 2027. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2027. Thank you for your patience. (2/2) — 任天堂株式会社 (@Nintendo) July 16, 2025
