UK To Reduce Voting Age To 16, These Countries Have Already Done It
The step is aimed at ensuring maximum participation in all elections once the proposed changes are written into law. The move will grant around 1.5 million 16 and 17-year-olds the right to vote when the country goes to the polls for the next general election in 2029, BBC reported.
But not all parties supported the idea.
While Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that young people should have the opportunity to say what they want their money spent on, Conservative MP Paul Holmes said the government's proposal was "hopelessly confused".
Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, said he didn't support lowering the voting age to 16 "even though we get lots of votes".
Apart from the voting age, the government also plans to expand the purview of UK-issued bank cards, which will be treated as legitimate voter ID in Great Britain, but they must have the elector's name, according to reports.
Not just that, once the changes come into effect, people will be able to apply for a postal vote at least 14 days before a poll. Earlier, the deadline was 11 days. This is to ensure people get their ballot in time.
The proposed law will bring uniformity as far as the age of voting rights across Britain is concerned. In Scotland and Wales, youngsters could already vote to elect their representatives to the devolved Parliament, but not so for the British polls.
Countries where the voting age is 16:
In Europe, only Austria, Malta, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands have granted voting rights to people who are at least 16 years old. Among other nations, Brazil, Argentina and Cuba, too, have voting age reduced to 16, according to The Guardian.
Parts of Germany, Israel, and Estonia allow 16 and 17-year-olds to vote in some, if not all, elections. While 16-year-olds are allowed to vote in Nicaragua, the legal voting age in Indonesia, East Timor, Ethiopia, North Korea, and Sudan is 17.

New Delhi: Uddhav Thackeray has responded to an 'offer' by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis that has sparked huge speculation. Mr Thackeray, who heads the Shiv Sena (UBT), also met the chief minister on Thursday, a development that led to a buzz over something in the works. Later, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Uddhav Thackeray's son Aaditya Thackeray said his father met Mr Fadnavis to discuss the Marathi language issue, which has been in the news in recent times. Mr Thackeray met Mr Fadnavis in the chamber of legislative council chairperson Ram Shinde. Worli MLA Aaditya Thackeray was also present in the meeting that lasted for about half-an-hour. On Friday, when reporters asked Uddhav Thackeray about Mr Fadnavis' offer, the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader said, "Before speaking to you, I was speaking to the print media. The undivided Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray parted ways with longtime ally BJP after the 2019 assembly election over a dispute on sharing the chief minister's post.

Will "Shut Down" Maharashtra Schools If Hindi Imposed From Class 1: Raj Thackeray
Mumbai: MNS chief Raj Thackeray on Friday warned Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis that if Hindi was made compulsory for Classes 1 to 5 in the state, "we will not hesitate to shut down schools". Speaking at a rally at Mira Bhayandar in the district, he asked the people of Maharashtra to stay alert and foil any plan of the government to impose Hindi. Earlier, workers of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) had roughed up a local shopkeeper after he allegedly refused to speak in Marathi. The BJP-led government recently withdrew two orders making Hindi mandatory in primary schools following strong opposition. Fadnavis, however, asserted on Thursday that the government will certainly introduce the three-language formula, but whether Hindi should be taught from Class 1 or Class 5 will be decided by the committee appointed to study the issue. Raj Thackeray, in his speech, dared Fadnavis to impose Hindi. "When they tried it once, we had shut down shops, and now we will not hesitate to shut down schools if Hindi is imposed (from Class 1 to 5)," he said. It was unfortunate that the chief minister of Maharashtra was striving to make Hindi compulsory, the MNS chief said. By imposing Hindi, the government was testing the people's response as it eventually wanted to attach Mumbai to Gujarat, Mr Thackeray alleged. Hindi was just "200 years old" while Marathi has a history of 2,500-3,000 years, he said. When migrants from Bihar were beaten up and driven away in Gujarat, it did not become an issue, but a minor incident in Maharashtra became a national issue, Raj Thackeray alleged. He also came down heavily on BJP MP Nishikant Dubey over his reported "patak patak ke marenge" remark, daring him to come to Mumbai. "Dube-dube ke marenge," Mr Thackeray said. He also referred to Morarji Desai and Vallabhbhai Patel's alleged anti-Marathi stand after independence. Maharashtrians should insist on speaking in Marathi everywhere in the state and make others speak the language, he said. Under the garb of Hindutva, there is an attempt to impose Hindi, he said. Raj, however, also stated that he can speak Hindi better than any other politician in Maharashtra, as his father was fluent in Hindi, and he was not against any language per se but opposed its imposition.

From free power to makhana board, Nitish hails PM Modi's development push
Patna: CM Nitish Kumar on Friday disclosed that the decision to provide 125 units of free power per house in the state was "on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi". While sharing dais with Modi at Motihari, Nitish said, "We respect him (Modi) a lot and we have been working in a manner that is in keeping with his advice." Modi responded to the remark by folding his hands. The CM also thanked Modi for taking time off to visit different parts of Bihar almost every month. Lauding Modi for his assistance in development of Bihar, Nitish said, "PM announced a significant financial package for the state in July 2024 Union Budget, focusing on roads, health, industry, tourism, and flood control. Assailing his previous Congress and RJD-led govts for poor development, the CM said, "You all know how the condition in the state before 2005 was. No work was done. On Nov 24, 2005, when the NDA govt was formed here, we started working on development. We have been working for the growth of Bihar for 20 years. Earlier, Bihar's annual budget used to be only Rs 24,000 crore. Now it has increased to more than Rs 3 lakh crore. Work is being done in the interest of the people. I thank the Prime Minister for his special attention to Bihar." In his address, PM Modi praised Nitish for his efforts towards the development of Bihar. He said Nitish govt has provided jobs to millions of youths in the state with complete transparency and has also resolved to create employment opportunities on a large scale. "Through the Jeevika Didi scheme, Nitish Kumar has paved the way for women to become self-reliant. The Nitish govt has increased the social security pension scheme from Rs 400 to Rs 1,100 per month, with the money being directly deposited into the beneficiaries' bank accounts. This decision will bring significant relief to the elderly, differently-abled individuals, and widowed sisters," the PM said.
