
European luxury market is growing and TikTok is increasingly key
"This is the result of several converging factors," assesses Rafal Drzewiecki, TikTok's Country Director for Central Europe, in an interview with Euronews.
"The recovery of tourism after the pandemic, attractive exchange rates and the growing importance of emotional consumption. European luxury has become more accessible."
In his opinion, a generational change is playing a key role. New consumers of luxury no longer buy for prestige. They buy for themselves.
This is borne out of the popularity of the hashtag #selfgifting, which has seen a 110% increase on TikTok in recent times alone.**
"We are seeing an explosion of content in which users celebrate their own achievements by buying themselves a gift," said Drzewiecki, adding that "it's not about demonstrating status, but about pleasure, satisfaction, and self-expression".
Polish luxury conquers the world
Against this background, Poland comes off impressively. The domestic luxury goods market grew by as much as 24% year-on-year in 2023 - well above the European average. The fastest growing segments are beauty, fashion and accessories.
It is not only global brands that have benefited from the wave of interest in luxury, but also Polish brands with character. TikTok has played no small part in this. An example? Inglot, a well-known cosmetics brand from Przemyśl, which gained a new global audience thanks to its presence on the platform.
"Brands such as Inglot and Chylak show that a well-told story and authenticity reach an international audience. On TikTok today, they are building communities around values, aesthetics and everyday rituals," Drzewiecki told Euronews.
In user content - from tutorials to 'get ready with me' - Inglot's products appear on smartphone screens from São Paulo to Seoul. The 9:16 aesthetic has become a natural environment for luxury.
Luxury without the glitz
The new generation expects more than perfect shots. What matters is authenticity. Premium brand campaigns gain popularity when they are real, surprisingly everyday - such as Burberry's clip of The Crown actors making tea.
"It works because it's human. The consumer today doesn't want advertising - they want relationships," Drzewiecki added.
This can also be seen in the data. As many as 89% of users say they trust the opinion of influencers more than classic advertising. One in four refrains from making a purchase until they have seen the product from their favourite creator.
In contrast, 60% of Polish TikTok users admit that they have been influenced into purchases through content on the platform.
TikTok made me buy it
The #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt trend has already amassed over 18.5 million videos. This is not a joke, but a conversion path. Today, luxury is not the result of a marketing strategy - it is an emotion, a moment, an aesthetic.
"If a product looks good, tells a story and resonates with the viewer's identity, a purchase decision is made almost immediately," Drzewiecki explained.
The luxury of tomorrow is a brand that listens
Does luxury have a future? Only if it becomes more accessible, more empathetic and ready to talk.
"The new generation expects authenticity, not perfection, from brands," said the director, adding that young people want "relationships, social engagement, and shared values".
"Luxury today starts in a world that does not resemble a catalogue," he concluded.
In a world where the 9:16 format reigns supreme and the voice of the user is as important as the brand narrative, luxury is no longer an exclusive privilege. It becomes a personal choice - lined with emotion, experience and aesthetics. It all starts with a scroll of the screen.

Orban vows to veto EU budget over frozen EU funds
The Hungarian government will not vote on the EU budget until Budapest receives its frozen EU funds, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a speech at the Bálványos Free University on Saturday. According to Orban, the adoption of the EU's record-breaking budget requires unanimity. "And until we get our backlog of money, there will be no new European budget. We will bring it home, and we will not make any concessions on our sovereignty," he said. Approximately €9.5 billion in COVID-19 recovery funding and €8.4 billion in cohesion funds make up the frozen funds by Brussels over persisting concerns about Hungary's democratic backsliding. Brussels and Budapest over the years have been at loggerheads on a range of issues, most recently that of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but the situation has been made worse by the financial issue. Orbán accuses the European Commission of "financial blackmail" and meddling in domestic matters due to its reasons for freezing the funds. Hungary previously unblocked about €10.2 billion of the frozen funds following the adoption of legislation aimed at reducing political meddling in its courts and strengthening judicial independence. However, a complaint was filed by the European Parliament against the EU Commission for its controversial decision to release the €10.2 billion ahead of a crucial summit. Some €18 billion remains frozen, with no signs or indication of progress, but in front of the large audience, Orban vowed to get the EU funds. Orban claims Trump helped avoid World War III The Commission's landmark €2 trillion long-term budget for 2028–2034 emphasises defence and economic competitiveness. For it to pass, it requires unanimous agreement among member states and must also be backed by Parliament, by a majority of its component members. In his speech in Tusványos on Saturday, Viktor Orbán said that the election of US President Donald Trump has helped the world to avoid a third world war for the time being, but the chances of its outbreak are still increasing. Orbán gave a speech with a sinister tone, touching on a variety of topics that included the war in Ukraine and the Fidesz party. The Hungarian PM blasted the EU for backing Ukraine and accused the EU leaders of dangerously waging a trade war with the Trump administration that Europe "cannot win." While some of his claims were typically outlandish, Orban received applause from the audience, with one attendee saying, "We got a very clear, very understandable vision from the Prime Minister. And we are not in an easy situation."

Inside Poland's Soviet-era festival that's now a thriving music hub
The origins of the Jarocin Festival date back to 1970, when it began as Wielkopolskie Rytmy Młodych (Wielkopolska Rhythms of the Young) - a regional music competition to promote amateur rock bands. Taking place in the small town of Jarocin, the event quickly gained popularity, attracting young people from all over Poland. In 1980, the festival changed its name and evolved into a platform for alternative and underground music. The festival gained a unique status in the Eastern Bloc. Unlike most communist countries, where rock music was suppressed, Jarocin became an officially tolerated (though closely monitored) space. It was one of the few places where bands could express themselves artistically freely, and give vent to frustrations about authoritarianism, censorship and social norms under the repressive communist regime. Jarocin in the 1980s was both a musical and socio-political phenomenon, offering a subversive voice for Polish youth during and after martial law. It became a breeding ground for Polish punk and rock icons such as Dezerter, Kult and Armia. With the fall of communism in 1989, Jarocin entered a period of transformation. The festival's original role - as a sanctuary of freedom of expression in a repressive regime - was no longer so necessary. The 1990s brought increased commercialisation of Polish culture, and Jarocin struggled to redefine itself in a more open, market-driven society. But the event went experienced a renaissance in the 2000s, fuelled by a growing nostalgia for the 1980s and a revived interest in alternative music. The festival is now organised by the Good Taste Production agency from Poznan, which has festivals such as NEXT FEST, SALT WAVE BY PORSCHE and BITTERSWEET Festival under its wing. In the beginning Edgar Hein, the festival spokesman explained more about the importance of event's past: "This is an absolute legend. A festival that dates back to 1970, where the careers of the biggest Polish bands began, and not just the rock ones. It was here that a kind of social revolution took place, you could say, because the subcultures of the 80s, 90s were here to find a place to show off. We always try to give a nod to the history of the festival, (and mark) things like the 40th anniversary of Darek Malejonek, the band Hunter or Kobranocka." Indeed, Darek Malejonek who's also known as "Maleo" was one of the first acts to perform at Jarocin: "In '84 we came to Jarocin for the competition with the band "Israel" and "Culture" to compete in the preliminaries. We managed to qualify for the big stage and that was the start of my artistic activity which continues to this day." "Today it is a commercial festival but my heart always beats stronger in this place, because this is where it all started." "There were a lot of security service agents and there were different, strange people in civilian clothes who sometimes even provoked riots. Television was filming such these riots and at that moment they were [portrayed as] disgracing in the eyes of the nation these dirty punks, metalheads." "Those communist times are now just a memory but they were difficult enough to give us the strength to cope in all times." Playing to perform Competition for young bands is still a very important part of the festival. Wirefall are one of the few bands who qualified to perform on the small stage. "We play very alternative, I think, that kind of alternative metal, new metal," explains Tomasz Piesiak. The musicians noted that many bands here play heavy, alternative music and yet the festival gets a family feel. "There are a lot of children, for example Mateusz and Konrad read Tuwim poems to the children as part of the festival," he said. "For the next Jarocin festival, when we play I will definitely take my family." Away from the music, there are a series of accompanying events and an exhibition to bring the events from the communist era closer to home Today's Jarocin combines nostalgia with modernity. It pays homage to its heritage while presenting contemporary punk, rock, indie and hip-hop artists. This allows Jarocin to maintain a bond with its roots, support independent musicians and alternative voices, and remain a symbol of youth rebellion and artistic freedom in Poland. It is not only a celebration of music, but also a living archive of Polish socio-political changes, reflecting changing identities, values and artistic expressions across generations. It is considered part of Poland's cultural heritage, with documentaries, exhibitions and academic studies dedicated to its history. From a subversive gathering of youth during the communist era to a dynamic music festival in democratic Poland, Jarocin's evolution reflects the country's historical trajectory.
