PC penetration doubles since Covid-19 to 15% households in 2024
Empower your mind, elevate your skills
Household PC penetration in India has nearly doubled since the Covid-19 pandemic, rising to 13-15% in 2024 from 6-8% in 2019. Annual consumer PC shipments surged to seven million units from four million over the same period, IDC data sourced by ET showed.Analysts said the market is undergoing a structural transformation beyond the temporary pandemic-induced surge, driven by refresh cycles, greater financial accessibility, and excitement around AI PCs in mid-tier prices. However, there is a lot of ground to cover, they added.'India's PC penetration continues to be way lower compared to developed economies and even our neighbour China,' said Bharath Shenoy, principal analyst at IDC.Limited purchasing power in lower-tier cities is a challenge, but brands are trying to bridge the gap with offers, cashbacks, and no-cost EMIs, he said. With low penetration, there is enough scope to attract first-time buyers, and sentiment is positive, Shenoy said.PC sales had slowed down after the pandemic-induced surge. They have started to pick up.Canalys forecasts consumer PC shipments to grow 4.2% in 2026, up from 2.5% in 2025.'The market didn't collapse post-pandemic, it recalibrated,' said Ashweej Aithal, senior analyst at Canalys. 'We're now seeing steadier growth, with smaller cities sustaining demand and education cycles driving seasonal spikes.'Firms Like HP and Lenovo also see opportunity for greater penetration in smaller cities.'Digital adoption is accelerating in tier-II and III cities,' said Vineet Gehani, senior director, personal systems, at HP India . 'AI PCs could account for nearly 50% of the global market by 2027,' he added.Adoption of AI PCs is still nascent, but vendors are ramping up efforts to build awareness and reduce price friction through financing schemes, vernacular outreach, and influencer-led campaigns.'We're working with partners to offer AI PCs across price bands, supported by vernacular content and financing,' said Dinesh Nair, director, consumer business, Lenovo India . 'Some of our best-performing stores are in cities like Indore, Bhopal, Nashik, and Visakhapatnam.'According to Canalys, consumer PC shipments grew 16% year on year in the first quarter of 2025 (January-March), driven by aggressive promotions and strong March-end shipments across channels. In the second quarter, however, early indicators suggest a flat trend with growth largely concentrated in the commercial segment, Aithal said.Experts and executives said gaming notebooks are in demand, with AI PCs also being key growth drivers going forward and upcoming festive sales set to give these a boost. They expect AI PCs to become a critical catalyst for first-time upgraders in smaller cities. While pandemic lockdowns made students and people in tier-II and tier-III cities more familiar with PCs, they don't use them on a daily basis, experts said.

Apple's iPhone 16 Demand In India Is High But What About The iPhone 16E?
iPhone 16 has been a hot-seller in the Indian market for Apple and even the older models are doing well but what about the newbie 16E? Apple continues to make merry in India with the iPhone 16 sales showing strong demand for the premium models while the iPhone 16E faces a fight to be relevant. The report from Canalys quoted by Moneycontrol says the company has now become the sixth brand in the country's smartphone market. Apple has managed to grab 55 percent of shipment in this quarter with the iPhone 16 lineup, the report adds. More importantly, the older iPhone 15 and even iPhone 13 variants have found buyers, even though you have the latest iPhone 16E available in the market. It is interesting that the non-Apple AI supported devices are doing well after the 16E launch in the country. So Apple is able to sell the older iPhone 15 in India but not the iPhone 16E, why? The report quotes analysts saying that people have not been appealed by the single camera at the back and the lack of functional Apple AI features that could tempt them into splurging on the new model. It is clear that India as a market views brand value with brands like Apple but specs are equally critical to match with their spending. We could see the trends change once the festive period kicks in and you have a window to offer these iPhones at special prices and get them across to more people in the country. view comments First Published: July 25, 2025, 08:52 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Abandoned flower market in Coimbatore becomes civic headache for traders, commuters
COIMBATORE: A multi-crore flower market complex on the eastern side of Mettupalayam Road (towards RG Street) in the Poo Market area of Coimbatore has become a significant point of contention for local traders and commuters alike. Built in 2020-21 at a cost of Rs 70 lakh, the facility, comprising 95 shops each measuring 6x8 feet, remains abandoned for over a year, with the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) yet to decide on its future. The complex was initially constructed to alleviate congestion at the older 'Panneerselvam Poo Market' on the western side of Mettupalayam Road (towards Vadakovai). During the COVID-19 pandemic, a section of traders briefly occupied the new building. However, following the renovation of the original market at a cost of Rs 1.2 crore under the Namakku Naame scheme (with Rs 40 lakh contributed by the Coimbatore District Flower Market Traders Welfare Association), traders returned to their traditional spot over a year ago, leaving the new facility dormant. The prolonged disuse of the eastern complex has exacerbated traffic woes on the already busy Mettupalayam Road. With many traders unable to secure spaces in either market, they have resorted to setting up roadside stalls near the abandoned facility, contributing to daily traffic snarls.
