Melaka to host 2025 National Cooperative Day with tourism boost
State Entrepreneur Development, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Allex Seah Shoo Chin said the celebration will include exhibitions and product sales by cooperatives nationwide. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is slated to officiate the opening ceremony.
'This year's event will be livelier as it coincides with World Tourism Day 2025, further boosting Melaka's tourism appeal,' he told reporters after the Semarak Konsumerisme programme with media practitioners.
Allex also highlighted Melaka's ongoing Rahmah Sale initiatives, aimed at easing living costs for the B40 group. From January to June, over 500 sales were conducted statewide, including Mobile Rahmah Sales and supermarket collaborations.
'Each state constituency holds at least two mobile sales monthly, alongside special programmes like 'Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat',' he said. Additional Rahmah Sales are scheduled for June 28-29 at selected supermarkets, with details on KPDN Melaka's Facebook page.

Malaysia to table world-first Gig Workers Bill by September to regulate, protect over one million Malaysians, says DPM Zahid
BANGI, July 1 — The Gig Workers Bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament as early as August or September, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said the proposed legislation, initiated by the government, would be the first of its kind in the world, specifically designed to safeguard the gig economy industry in Malaysia. 'This is a significant step in introducing a social protection framework for over 1.12 million Malaysians involved in the sector. 'Several countries have only amended existing laws to include the gig economy, but in Malaysia, we are introducing a new and dedicated act,' he told a press conference after the Sharing Economy and Gig Industry Roundtable Session here today. Previously, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim gave his assurance that all issues and welfare concerns involving gig workers would be addressed promptly through the drafting of the bill. Ahmad Zahid further said that the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has expressed interest in learning from Malaysia's experience in drafting the bill. He said this was conveyed by Malaysian Gig Community Secretariat chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin, who is currently in Geneva, Switzerland, to share information about the bill with the ILO. The Gig Workers Bill aims to provide equitable protection for gig workers, in line with efforts to build a fair, inclusive and resilient future economy. Meanwhile, in a statement, Ahmad Zahid said the soon-to-be-established Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM) will serve as a key component in the national gig economy ecosystem. He said the commission will act as the primary body for implementing, coordinating and monitoring the sector, ensuring industry compliance and transparent policy enforcement. 'It will also strengthen self-regulation practices among platform providers,' he said. Ahmad Zahid added that SEGiM will be placed under the Prime Minister's Department to ensure integrated policy coordination at the national level. 'The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation will continue to serve as the technical secretariat, consolidating industry input and coordinating engagement sessions with the Human Resource Ministry,' he said. Anwar Heads To Europe, Brazil For Bilateral Talks, BRICS Summit
Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will embark on a high-level official visit to Italy, France and Brazil from July 1 to 7, aimed at strengthening Malaysia's diplomatic and economic ties with key international partners and representing Malaysia at the 17th BRICS Summit. According to the Prime Minister's Office, the visits to Rome, Paris and Rio de Janeiro reflect Malaysia's strategic intent to deepen cooperation in areas such as trade, technology, culture and education. Collectively, these three nations recorded RM50.91 billion (US$11.14 billion) in bilateral trade with Malaysia in 2024. In Italy, Anwar is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to discuss economic partnerships and explore joint cultural initiatives. A Business Roundtable and engagements with the local Muslim community and Malaysian diaspora are also on the agenda. In France, he will hold talks with President Emmanuel Macron focused on trade, digital innovation and higher education. Anwar will also deliver a public lecture at Sorbonne University and participate in industry roundtables with major French corporations. From July 5 to 7, Anwar will be in Rio de Janeiro to attend the BRICS Summit, at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
