Melaka to host 2025 National Cooperative Day with tourism boost

MELAKA: Melaka has been selected to host the 2025 National Cooperative Day (HKN) from July 25 to 27 at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh. The event, organised by the Malaysian Cooperative Commission (SKM), is expected to attract over 10,000 visitors. State Entrepreneur Development, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Allex Seah Shoo Chin said the celebration will include exhibitions and product sales by cooperatives nationwide. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is slated to officiate the opening ceremony. 'This year's event will be livelier as it coincides with World Tourism Day 2025, further boosting Melaka's tourism appeal,' he told reporters after the Semarak Konsumerisme programme with media practitioners. Allex also highlighted Melaka's ongoing Rahmah Sale initiatives, aimed at easing living costs for the B40 group. From January to June, over 500 sales were conducted statewide, including Mobile Rahmah Sales and supermarket collaborations. 'Each state constituency holds at least two mobile sales monthly, alongside special programmes like 'Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat',' he said. Additional Rahmah Sales are scheduled for June 28-29 at selected supermarkets, with details on KPDN Melaka's Facebook page.

Check with Cooperative Commission before joining investment - Ewon

Ewon PENAMPANG (June 13): Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick has reminded the public to always verify with the Malaysian Cooperative Commission (SKM) before participating in any investment advertised under the name of a cooperative. He stressed that this is crucial to avoid confusion and prevent becoming victims of unauthorised investment scams. 'I would like to remind all Malaysians to first refer to the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) or SKM should there be any investment advertisements from any cooperative. 'Obtain accurate information from SKM beforehand, to determine whether the investment in question has been licensed accordingly. 'This is because under SKM law, any cooperative promoting an investment must first obtain approval from SKM,' he said during an interview with reporters after officiating the 2025 Penampang PPDK Kaamatan Festival Celebration at the Penampang Library Hall here today. He was responding to questions regarding reports of investment promotions by certain cooperatives. Ewon stated, 'I have yet to receive the details, but I will instruct the ministry and the cooperative division, particularly SKM, to provide a full report.' He also urged the public to exercise greater caution and not be easily misled by investment advertisements promising high returns, especially those circulated on social media without proper references. He further advised people to contact SKM offices available in every state and district to obtain verified information. 'SKM's contact information is not difficult to access — just visit their official website or go directly to their offices. This is essential so that we don't fall victim to fraud,' he said. Ewon also emphasised that any registered cooperative found to be conducting unapproved investment activities will face stern action.

New Co-op Bill: Sabah gives proposals

Published on: Sunday, May 04, 2025 Published on: Sun, May 04, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Ewon said the new Bill will focus on liberalising legal aspects and strengthening the role of the Malaysian Cooperative Commission (SKM) as the main regulatory body. Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government has submitted constructive proposals for consideration in the drafting of the new Cooperative Bill during Saturday's engagement session with the Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Ministry (Kuskop). Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said all recommendations from state administration members would be thoroughly reviewed and incorporated where appropriate in the legislative preparation process. He said the new Bill will focus on liberalising legal aspects and strengthening the role of the Malaysian Cooperative Commission (SKM) as the main regulatory body. Ewon said several studies conducted in 2023 found there were legal constraints that made it difficult for cooperatives to conduct business activities directly in various sectors. 'For example, the Tourism Industry Act 1992 and the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act 1998 only allow companies registered under the Companies Act 2016 to operate in those sectors,' he said. To date, Kuskop and SKM have conducted 10 engagement sessions involving 295 cooperatives and 47 government agencies, with the next session scheduled to be held in Penang. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
