Schneider, a 69-year-old former butcher and pizza chef, and his partner Nathalie Caboubassy are currently on trial for the crime. Another man, gravedigger Loup Benrakia, has been accused as an accomplice.

Schneider and Caboubassy have been accused by police of planning to rob Meichler's isolated home. During the attempted burglary, they are alleged to have tied up and gagged Meichler, but then return after searching the house to find him dead from suffocation.

He eventually confessed to the murder and the gruesome attempt to conceal it. He has pleaded guilty to all charges and expressed remorse for his actions.

Schenider has admitted to burning the victim's head, hands and feet, and scattering ashes around the property. He has also cited having seen a similar ritual in Nepal, suggesting a possible justification for his method of disposing the victim's remains.

The crime came to light after Meichler's daughter reported him missing, and police noticed Schneider and Caboubassy driving the victim's car. Police discovered the traces of the missing man's remains and blood in the back.

Schneider's defence lawyer said: 'Philippe Schneider acknowledges his full responsibility and all the facts he is accused of.'

He also stated Schneider was living a 'life of alcohol and drugs,' which supposedly contributed to the gruesome shift from burglary to murder and dismemberment, describing Schenider's actions as a descent into 'absurdity and horror.'

More than $400K in stolen property recovered after man found passed out in truck: RCMP
A loaded handgun was seized from rural Alberta along with $427,000 worth of stolen vehicles in July 2025, RCMP say. (Credit: RCMP) An Edmonton man is facing numerous charges after police recovered more than $400,000 worth of stolen property. Mounties were called to a rural property in Leduc county at 1:38 p.m. on July 15 for a report of a suspicious man passed out in a pickup. Police found the man slumped over in the driver's seat of the vehicle and arrested him on outstanding warrants. According to an RCMP news release, the man also had a loaded firearm on the passenger's seat of the truck. The truck and trailer were both determined to be stolen, and officers also located several other stolen vehicles. The total value of the recovered property is $427,000, according to RCMP. A 29-year-old Edmonton man has been charged with: careless use of a firearm; possess a weapon for a dangerous purpose; occupy a motor vehicle knowing a firearm inside; possess a firearm without a license; possession of a loaded firearm with readily accessible ammunition; seven counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000; two counts of fail to comply with an order; and operate motor vehicle while prohibited. He remains in custody while awaiting his next court appearance.

Teen girls arrested after two women robbed and assaulted on Saskatoon transit bus
Four teen girls were arrested and charged after two women were robbed and assaulted on a Saskatoon transit bus. At around 7:30 p.m., on Thursday, July 31, police responded to a report of a fight on a bus parked in the 3500 block of 8th Street East, Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) said. Arriving officers found that four females had boarded the bus and assaulted two women, stealing several items from them. One victim was struck with a large portable speaker. Police say both victims sustained minor injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. The suspects were later arrested at a nearby home. Three girls, ages 14, 15, and 16, each face two counts of robbery and assault, and the fourth girl, 14, is charged with assault with a weapon, assault, and two counts of robbery.
