Newport Beach 12-and-under boys nab silver at USA Water Polo Junior Olympics

IRVINE — The Newport Beach Water Polo Club 12-and-under boys certainly became more than familiar with Del Mar during the course of the club season.
The teams played six times, and Tuesday's gold medal match of the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics might have been the closest of all.
In the end, Del Mar goalkeeper Braxton Harp came up big.
Harp earned MVP honors, making two saves in a penalty shootout that Del Mar won 4-1 at Woollett Aquatics Center.
The teams were tied 10-10 after regulation, but only Pierce Clymer could score for Newport Beach in the shootout that followed.
'Honestly, they played their hearts out,' Newport Beach 12U coach Konstantinos Koulouris said of his silver-medal winners. 'They played so good. We were locked in from the beginning and very focused. I'm so proud of them for all of the performances that they had the whole weekend. It's hard to beat a team that you've lost to four times, you know.'
Del Mar improved to 4-2 against Newport Beach in the club season, including an 11-9 victory in the Junior Olympic quarterfinals on Monday. But the locals from Newport didn't quit there, beating Mission in a play-in game to the semifinals, where they edged Vanguard 7-7 (3-1 in a shootout) on Tuesday morning.
Clymer led Newport Beach with four goals in the gold medal match, and Tanner Thomas scored three. Dalton Horne added a pair of goals.
Playing at center, Evan Shackelford scored a late goal that gave Newport a 10-9 lead, and he also drew eight exclusions and a penalty shot in the final.
'Obviously, I want to score, that's my priority,' Shackelford said. 'But if I have to, I'll let go of the ball if [the defender] is on my back all of the time. I just want to shoot and score and celebrate with my teammates.'
Shackelford and Thomas helped Newport Beach foul out three Del Mar players. Del Mar finished the game without any substitutes available.
'That's our game plan,' Koulouris said. 'We tried to find small entry passes, draw the ejections and play quick. That's what they did … We tried to make some plays in order to put one more kid out, but it didn't work out. They're 12, and they're under pressure.
'It's a great lesson for them for the years after, right? They're going to play this team again multiple times in the future, maybe until they go to college. Del Mar is a great program, they work hard and they have a great coaching staff.'
Goalkeeper Finn Breneman made eight saves for Newport Beach, and Hayden Stout had three steals. Other contributors included Stryder Gregory, Griffin Harvey, Oliver Horowitz, Pierson Nichols, Wyatt Robinson, Logan Jameson and Cameron Berman.
Del Mar's Attila McCollum scored a late equalizer to send the match to overtime, one of his three goals, and Jason Robinson led the winners with four goals.
All of the Newport Beach players will be aging up to the 14-and-under age group next year, and they do hope to meet up with Del Mar again in the future.
'I think we showed up pretty well,' Thomas said. 'There were definitely things we needed to work on toward the end. It kept on going back and forth, which does get a little stressful at times. A few adjustments we need to make, and hopefully we can be back here in a few years with the same team and win it all.'
Other local boys' club teams also grabbed medals during Session One of the Junior Olympics. They included Newport Beach Blue 10U (bronze in platinum division), Newport Beach White 10U (bronze in gold division), Vanguard 12U (bronze in platinum division), Newport Beach White 12U (silver in classic bracket), Corona del Mar 14U (silver in gold division), Costa Mesa Aquatics Club 14U (bronze in invitational bracket), Vanguard Silver 16U (bronze in invitational bracket) and Vanguard Silver 18U (bronze in classic bracket).
Session Two, which features co-ed and female age divisions, begins Thursday and runs through Sunday.

Arizona Cardinals 53-man roster projections after 1 week of training camp

The first week of training camp is in the books for the Cardinals. Here is what the 53-man roster might look like today. The Arizona Cardinals began training camp this week and the battle for the 53-man roster has commenced. There have been highlights and injuries. Cornerback Star Thomas is out for the season with an ACL tear. Rookie defensive lineman Walter Nolen has a calf injury that could keep him out of all of camp. Veteran defensive lineman Bilal Nichols still hasn't recovered from the neck injury he suffered in Week 6. With a couple of practices in the books, this is our first attempt to predict the 53-man roster, based on what we know. Arizona Cardinals 53-man roster projection after first week of training camp This is easy. Murray and Brissett are locks. Clayton Tune's best chance is for the practice squad. The Cardinals have not had more than two quarterbacks on the active roster since Jonathan Gannon became head coach. This room feels set as well. While many would like to see Michael Carter push for a spot, he isn't going to beat out Benson for the primary back to Conner, he isn't going to beat out Demercado for the third-down role with special teams and isn't going to beat out Dallas for the kick return/special teams ace role. Fehoko is an intriguing option with length and speed, but he doesn't offer much on special teams. $1 million of his salary is guaranteed. One of these guys will be inactive on game days. Josiah Deguara is an intriguing option because of his special teams play, but he would have to be the No. 3 tight end on the roster to be worth keeping because the Cardinals never have four tight ends active in a game, and what is the point of a special teams ace that isn't active? The numbers will be tough here. The top six are locks. Beachum is the backup swing tackle. Gaines will be the backup center and then Leverett can play all over the line. Conner is developmental. Could they keep 10? That could include second-year tackle Christian Jones, rookie tackle Josh Fryar or veteran Royce Newman. Nolen doesn't make the roster because I predict he will start the season on PUP and will be out at least four weeks. If he is going to miss all of camp, he probably will not have enough reps to be ready for the season. His roster spot will be a future problem, when it would make more sense to cut Collier, who has $750,000 in guaranteed salary. That will have been paid out in the first seven weeks. Also, I am also predicting that Nichols' neck injury will keep him from playing. That makes six players for six spots easy. Xavier Thomas gets bumped from the roster. Ojulari is on PUP still recovering from his torn ACL, so that will be something to watch. Four of these five slots feel like easy choices. Do they keep four or five? Walker gives them special teams play. Thomas' injury makes the starting lineup easy, but the two backup spots will be between Clark, Burke (a rookie) and 2024 third-round pick Elijah Jones. Jones gets bumped. Blount beats out rookie Kitan Crawford. These are set. Projecting Opening Night starting lineup for OKC Thunder in 2025-26 season

Don't fix what's not broken. That's the Oklahoma City Thunder's unofficial offseason motto. After winning the NBA championship, they have the rare opportunity to bring back basically the same roster — minus some changes at the bottom of the depth chart. The Thunder will enter the 2025-26 season at the top of the food chain. The NBA champions will hope to be a rare repeat winner. They spent the offseason locking down Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren to long-term deals. Dealing with constant injuries, the Thunder fluctuated their starting lineup throughout their historic 68-14 regular-season campaign. Throw in Mark Daigneault's tendency to be fluid with his rotation throughout the year, expect OKC to remain flexible with its starters. As the Thunder continue to enjoy their summer, they're only a few months away from defending their top spot. Let's project what OKC's starting lineup could look like when it receives its ring on Opening Night: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander This is easy. Gilgeous-Alexander is the Thunder's franchise player. He had one of the greatest individual seasons ever. He brought home the MVP, Conference Finals MVP and NBA Finals MVP trophies. He also won the scoring title. The 27-year-old is one of the best players in the league. OKC's title window starts and stops with him. Lu Dort One of the longest-tenured Thunder players, Dort is fresh off a career season. He was named to his first All-Defensive Team. He's one of the league's best one-on-one defenders. The undrafted player has also developed into a legitimate outside shooter. He's been a fixture in the starting lineup for years now. Jalen Williams Another easy choice. Williams ascended into one of the NBA's best players last season. He had a career year as a first-time All-Star, All-NBA and All-Defense Team member. The 24-year-old is a walking efficient 20-plus points and an underrated defender. His trajectory should continue to rise after he stepped up as OKC's second-best player in the playoffs. Chet Holmgren Another easy choice. Injuries have limited Holmgren to playing only about half of his available games in his first three seasons. That said, he's easily the Thunder's best defender when he's on the floor. The 23-year-old has shown promise as a scorer over the years. But what he brings as a rim protector is worthy enough of the contract extension he signed this past summer. Isaiah Hartenstein As was said at the top — don't fix what's not broken. The Thunder have four permanent starters with a fifth spot up for grabs. Sometimes it's Hartenstein, other times it's somebody like Cason Wallace. But the Thunder stuck with the double-big lineup throughout the playoffs, sans a few NBA Finals games. It was the starting lineup that won them both of their Game 7s. It should be the same starting lineup to open next season.

Star Thomas injury: How it impacts the Arizona Cardinals' CB competition

Thomas' injury means the starting lineup looks clear and there are two spots for three players to fight for. The Arizona Cardinals lost a potential starting cornerback for the season for the second time on Friday. After Sean Murphy-Bunting had an offseason knee injury that landed him on the NFI (non-football injury) list, ending his season, Star Thomas V tore his ACL on Friday in training camp. This impacts the position battle for both starting roles and players battling simply for roster spots. Let's take a look at the impact. Star Thomas injury: How it impacts the starting lineup We can presume that Garrett Williams has the nickel cornerback job locked down. Last season, Murphy-Bunting, Thomas and 2024 second-round pick Max Melton rotated the two boundary cornerback jobs, with Thomas and Murphy-Bunting getting more playing time. Entering camp, the battle was between Thomas, Melton and rookie Will Johnson, the Cardinals' second-round pick this year. Now, with Thomas out for the season, unless a player like 2024 third-round Elijah Jones, who was on inured reserve all last season, Kei'Trel Clark or rookie fifth-round pick Denzel Burke can push their way into the starting conversation, the two outside corner starters will be Melton and Johnson. The Cardinals could also bring in a veteran. Star Thomas injury: How it impacts the depth Last season, the Cardinals kept five cornerbacks on the roster. Before Thomas got hurt, it looked like he would have been a lock for the roster unless he got traded, and he would have been a player with a little bit of trade value. That would have left one roster spot available for Clark, Burke and Jones. Now there are two roster spots for the three players. Clark played some last year and head coach Jonathan Gannon noted he was having a good camp so far. Burke is a rookie and Jones didn't play last season because he was on injured reserve. The injury also could open the door for Jaylon Jones, signed in the offseason but has been more a special teams player in his career, to have a better chance at cracking the roster.
