Australian air travel to Indonesia disrupted by volcano
July 7 (UPI) -- The latest eruption of Indonesia's Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano caused the cancellation of several international flights on Monday.
Air travel from Australia to Bali has been temporarily canceled as volcanic material and ash was spewed over 11 miles into the sky as the volcano located on Flores island erupted at around 10 p.m. EDT Sunday.
Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation, or PVMBG, of the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, or ESDM, announced Monday that the volcanic plume was the highest from Lewotobi Laki Laki since 2023.
Australian airlines such as Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Qantas have canceled several flights between Australia and Bali following the eruption.
There haven't been any reports of damage or injury, but the government has placed an approximately five-mile exclusion zone around the crater and evacuated nearby villages.
Lewotobi Laki Laki last erupted in June and similarly caused disruption to air travel then as well, as has its other past eruptions.

'I found a great restaurant, ordered a takeaway salad, and went in. Little did I know, this place is the place to be in Coffs Harbour, it was packed,' he recalled. 'It's called the Jetty Pavilion, and I went in there, and there was a lot of people who saw me, and said g'day, and wanted to have a photo and all that, which is all good.' 'But it turned into a bit of a frenzy,' Robert added. 'Was a little bit of a flurry there for a minute, and they were so nice; they got the salad super fast, I made sure I said 'hi' to absolutely everyone, cheers, thanks so much, have a good night, see you later… And then, the next morning, I wake up and realize I never paid for my salad.' 'I just did the old dine and dash, and I didn't even realize I'd done it!' Robert exclaimed with laughter. 'I felt terrible, so, y'know, I reached out: 'Do you want me to give you my credit card details or Venmo you or, how do you want me to do it?' because I'd left Coffs Harbour, and they said: 'Oh, love what you do, it's all good, sorry for the mix up — just leave us a good review!''Robert said as a token of his gratitude, he was recommending the restaurant to all of his millions of followers, who he asked to support the local business that had a 'great team, great food, amazing atmosphere.' He then confirmed that he still planned to pay for his salad on his return trip through Coffs Harbour, explaining: 'I apologize again, I know you guys were like: 'It's all good,' but I am going to be coming back up through Coffs Harbour, and I am going to be giving you, in person, the money for that salad, because today is not the day I start my life of crime — as much as the tabloids would love that, it's not happening.' Greece's culture ministry closed the monument due to the heatwave conditions as temperatures are expected to reach 107 degrees Fahrenheit in Greece. The closure took place during 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. for the "the safety of workers and visitors," according to the ministry. The heatwave is not considered unusual, as in June and July last year, the attraction was also closed due to extreme heat. This follows the country's labor ministry's mandatory five-hour work stoppage from noon to 5 p.m. for outdoor workers and food delivery services in central Greece and some islands, as temperatures are expected to rise above 104 degrees Fahrenheit. According to the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, heat waves are becoming more common due to human-caused climate change.
