Australian air travel to Indonesia disrupted by volcano
July 7 (UPI) -- The latest eruption of Indonesia's Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano caused the cancellation of several international flights on Monday.
Air travel from Australia to Bali has been temporarily canceled as volcanic material and ash was spewed over 11 miles into the sky as the volcano located on Flores island erupted at around 10 p.m. EDT Sunday.
Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation, or PVMBG, of the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, or ESDM, announced Monday that the volcanic plume was the highest from Lewotobi Laki Laki since 2023.
Australian airlines such as Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Qantas have canceled several flights between Australia and Bali following the eruption.
There haven't been any reports of damage or injury, but the government has placed an approximately five-mile exclusion zone around the crater and evacuated nearby villages.
Lewotobi Laki Laki last erupted in June and similarly caused disruption to air travel then as well, as has its other past eruptions.

Robert Irwin's Accidental Dine And Dash, Reactions
Robert Irwin is being praised for how he handled realizing that he had accidentally stolen a salad from an Australian restaurant during his road trip. The 21-year-old media personality, who is the son of the late conservationist Steve Irwin, was suitably mortified by the fact that he'd inadvertently dined and dashed as he explained the situation to his 7.6 million Instagram a video that he posted to his profile on Sunday, Robert explained that he is currently road tripping down the East Coast of Australia, and recently stopped for dinner at Coffs Harbour, which is a coastal town in northern New South Wales. 'I found a great restaurant, ordered a takeaway salad, and went in. Little did I know, this place is the place to be in Coffs Harbour, it was packed,' he recalled. 'It's called the Jetty Pavilion, and I went in there, and there was a lot of people who saw me, and said g'day, and wanted to have a photo and all that, which is all good.' 'But it turned into a bit of a frenzy,' Robert added. 'Was a little bit of a flurry there for a minute, and they were so nice; they got the salad super fast, I made sure I said 'hi' to absolutely everyone, cheers, thanks so much, have a good night, see you later… And then, the next morning, I wake up and realize I never paid for my salad.' 'I just did the old dine and dash, and I didn't even realize I'd done it!' Robert exclaimed with laughter. 'I felt terrible, so, y'know, I reached out: 'Do you want me to give you my credit card details or Venmo you or, how do you want me to do it?' because I'd left Coffs Harbour, and they said: 'Oh, love what you do, it's all good, sorry for the mix up — just leave us a good review!''Robert said as a token of his gratitude, he was recommending the restaurant to all of his millions of followers, who he asked to support the local business that had a 'great team, great food, amazing atmosphere.' He then confirmed that he still planned to pay for his salad on his return trip through Coffs Harbour, explaining: 'I apologize again, I know you guys were like: 'It's all good,' but I am going to be coming back up through Coffs Harbour, and I am going to be giving you, in person, the money for that salad, because today is not the day I start my life of crime — as much as the tabloids would love that, it's not happening.' 'I'm so sorry again. I felt terrible,' Robert reiterated before joking: 'Onto the rest of the road trip, I am not going to steal any more salads!'And people have been left impressed by how Robert handled the whole thing. Discussing the video on a Reddit forum, one popular comment reads: 'I know it's a low bar thing, but I do appreciate him realizing what happened, apologizing, and making amends for the mistake.''Quite possibly the only example I've seen where 'I'll pay you in exposure' was more than what was asked for,' somebody else wrote, while another added: 'He's the biggest green flag ever.'Robert's followers also praised him in the comments of the original video, with one person writing: 'As a small business owner, I can confirm that you just did the absolute most WONDERFUL thing for them by doing this!! Such a kind (and life-changing) gesture.''That is the absolute cutest and most honest thing I've seen all day 😂 you really did them a solid with that wonderful review, love it!' one more echoed, and Jetty Pavilion themselves were overwhelmed with thanks in the comments. 'Ohhhh my goodness! We were just out on a family walk to Woolgoolga Waterfall and came back to see this!' the person behind its social media account wrote. 'Thank you soooo much for visiting our venue we're honestly blown away. Being from a humble little coastal town, it means the world to us to have you stop by.''We're all huge fans, and truly appreciate the shoutout. We can only imagine how hard it must be to enjoy a quiet meal without being bombarded so thank you again for choosing us, and no stress about missing the payment!' they went on. 'We'd absolutely love to have you back anytime… we might even have to name a salad after you 🐊🌿'Over on their own account, Jetty Pavilion later revealed that another customer had picked up Robert's bill, sharing a photo of the kind stranger alongside the caption: 'Tell Robert his salad's officially been paid for 😂🫶 Daniel stopped in on his way back to Melbourne after seeing the story and get this…. 1. He paid for Robert's salad 2. Got one for himself 3. And paid another one forward! Honestly, moments like this just remind us how many beautiful people there are in the world. Big thanks to Daniel for the kindness and to Jake for grabbing a pic! What an absolute legend! 🙌🥗' You can watch Robert's full video below, let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Greece closes Acropolis amid heat wave
July 8 (UPI) -- A heat wave in Greece closed the Acropolis in Athens temporarily on Tuesday. Greece's culture ministry closed the monument due to the heatwave conditions as temperatures are expected to reach 107 degrees Fahrenheit in Greece. The closure took place during 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. for the "the safety of workers and visitors," according to the ministry. The heatwave is not considered unusual, as in June and July last year, the attraction was also closed due to extreme heat. This follows the country's labor ministry's mandatory five-hour work stoppage from noon to 5 p.m. for outdoor workers and food delivery services in central Greece and some islands, as temperatures are expected to rise above 104 degrees Fahrenheit. According to the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, heat waves are becoming more common due to human-caused climate change. Greek Authorities said they are taking long-term steps to address climate change. Copyright 2025 UPI News Corporation. All Rights Reserved.
