Kenneth Stern obituary
He lived a stone's throw from Marble Arch in central London for more than half of his life, but it was not until retirement that he became more involved in local affairs, largely through the circumstance of acquiring a dalmatian, William, whom he walked through Hyde Park.
Subsequently he became a member of the London Diocesan Synod of the Church of England and chairman both of the Hyde Park Estate Association (1995-2000) and of the Friends of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens (2000-05), helping to raise the latter's membership from 250 to 1,000.
Born into a middle-class non-observant Jewish family in Hamburg, he was the second son of Ilse (nee Schoening) and Walter Stern. Always adaptable, once in the UK he learned English quickly (although, as someone once observed, he 'lost his German accent and never quite found an English one'), and converted to Christianity.
After attending Uppingham school in Rutland, he went to Oxford University in 1949 to read law at Worcester College, afterwards becoming a member of Lloyds of London and working as an insurance broker alongside his father at Bleichroeder Bing until retiring in the mid-1970s.
Keen to acknowledge the strong links that for centuries had existed between London and Hamburg, Michael Savory, the 2004 Lord Mayor of London, tasked Kenneth with arranging for a delegation from Hamburg to take part in the Lord Mayor's Show of that year. The move was a great success, and the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce continued to take part in the show for a number of years, while various lord mayors were invited to the Hamburger Morgensprache, an annual festival dinner descended from the 13th-century business meetings of the same name attended by Hamburg merchants living and working in London.
Kenneth loved London and Hamburg in equal measure, visiting his birthplace frequently and only stopping when ill-health made all foreign travel impossible. It was a source of pride and joy to him when in 2014 the senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg presented him with the Silver Portugaleser, one of its highest awards, for his services in fostering links between the cities.
His marriage to my mother, Elizabeth (nee Benett), ended in divorce. He is survived by me.

Woody Allen to publish his first novel
The first novel by the film-maker Woody Allen is due to be released later this year by independent publisher Swift Press. The book, titled What's With Baum?, is about a middle-aged Jewish journalist turned novelist 'consumed with anxiety about everything under the sun', according to a description from the publisher. Baum's 'turgid philosophical books receive tepid reviews and his prestigious New York publisher has dropped him'. Baum's third marriage is 'on the rocks', and 'in a moment of irrationality, he has impulsively tried to kiss a pretty young journalist during an interview that she is about to go public with'. Since the 1970s, Allen has written several books of short stories and essays, as well as a memoir, Apropos of Nothing, published in 2020. The memoir was dropped by its original US publisher, Hachette, after a staff walkout over allegations that Allen sexually abused his daughter in the early 90s, which have come to define his public image in recent years. The memoir was eventually published by Arcade. Allen's daughter, Dylan Farrow, has alleged that he sexually assaulted her in 1992, when she was seven years old. Allen has always denied the allegations, calling them 'a total fabrication from start to finish' in his memoir. Two investigations at the time did not lead to criminal charges. What's With Baum?, which runs to 160 pages, is 'a portrait of an intellectual crippled by neurotic concerns about the futility and emptiness of life', said Swift Press. Baum 'suspects his handsome and successful younger brother may have seduced his Harvard-educated wife. He is uneasy with her close relationship with her son, a more successful author than he, and suspicious of her closeness with their neighbour in Connecticut.' 'Is it any wonder Baum has started talking to himself?' states the publisher's description. 'Strangers shake their heads and walk around him on the street. Meanwhile he learns a startling secret that could cause havoc should he expose it. Should he keep it to himself or reveal it and blow up his marriage?' The novel is due to be published in September. Swift Press publisher Mark Richards said the company was 'thrilled' to be publishing the book. 'It is all we could have hoped – funny, clever, engrossing and wonderfully human. Woody Allen may have waited almost 90 years before he wrote a novel, but it's been worth the wait.' Swift Press was established in June 2020. In 2022, it launched an imprint, Forum, to publish 'thinkers who expand the realms of debate and aren't afraid to question contemporary orthodoxies', and has since published titles including Liberal Bullies: Inside the Mind of the Authoritarian Left by Luke Conway and Gay Shame: The Rise of Gender Ideology and the New Homophobia by Gareth Roberts.

Matthieu Blazy, the brand's new creative director, has chosen New York City for his first show dedicated to the house's artisanal excellence under his direction. Chanel's Métiers d'Art 2025/26 show will take place on December 2, 2025. In a press release, the house noted that this choice 'extends the history that has united Chanel with New York since the 1930s, from Gabrielle Chanel's first trips across the Atlantic to the Paris-New York Métiers d'Art collection show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2018.' 'I am delighted that Blazy has chosen New York for his first Métiers d'Art show,' said Bruno Pavlovsky, president of fashion activities at Chanel. 'He will resonate the creative energy of the city he knows so well with the exceptional savoir-faire of the house.'
