Kota Kinabalu: There is room for another State Legislative Assembly sitting before the state elections due later this year, said Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun. He stressed the need to table the 2026 State Budget to ensure continuity of government operations.
Advertisement 'The budget can be presented either before or after the 17th State Election. But it must be tabled to avoid disruptions to government services early next year. 'For example, we must ensure civil servants are paid and government programmes can proceed as planned. 'Even if elections are called early, there is still enough time to table the budget in November as usual. 'However, if the assembly is dissolved later, we believe we still have a window in December to convene and table the budget before the year ends so there are no hiccups,' he told reporters. On Sabah's fiscal negotiations with the federal government, Masidi acknowledged that both parties have laid their positions clearly. 'Sabah has put its cards on the table, what we want and what we expect. Likewise, the federal government has also presented their side. 'Leaders like Fadillah and Jeffrey have already given their statements. What has been agreed so far will be brought back for respective internal deliberations before both sides return to find mutually acceptable solutions,' he said. Masidi said while Sabah understands the complexity of federal-state fiscal issues, the state will not compromise on what is already enshrined in the Constitution. 'As far as Sabah is concerned, we stand by our previous statements. What is constitutionally provided for cannot be compromised. Sabah deserves to get what it is entitled to,' he said. He acknowledged that the current economic climate does not lend itself to 'a generous attitude' from the federal side. Meanwhile, Masidi said the 'Most Outstanding State' award, while prestigious, is not a declaration that Sabah has already achieved excellence but an acknowledgement of the state government's tireless efforts to move Sabah toward a level of development that had long been elusive. 'What was recognised was not that we've reached the peak, but the commitment and progress made by the government to bring Sabah to a level we have always struggled to reach,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 72 Sabah dilapidated school upgrades completed
Published on: Sunday, August 03, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 03, 2025 By: Patimang Abdul Ghani Text Size: PITAS: Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said 72 of 111 dilapidated school upgrade projects in Sabah have been completed at a cost of RM359 million, with 37 more worth RM631 million under construction. One project worth RM12.6 million is in the design stage and another worth RM54 million is at the procurement stage, bringing the total to nearly RM1 billion. During a visit to SMK Pinggan-Pinggan in Pitas, Ahmad said all works are via open tender to ensure timely or early completion. The RM27 million SMK Pinggan-Pinggan project, 78pc complete, includes two hostel blocks, warden houses, a dining hall for 400 students, and support facilities. The new hostel, to be completed in December 2025, will replace one located 1.3km away, which forces students to walk along busy roads without pedestrian paths. Ahmad said it will improve safety, reduce absenteeism, and provide better living conditions. He added that these projects reflect the Madani government's commitment to improving rural education infrastructure and narrowing the urban-rural education gap. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Fire near Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant contained: Russia
A fire that broke out near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant after Ukrainian shelling has been brought under control, the Russian-installed administration of the Russia-held plant in Ukraine said on Saturday. Russian forces seized the Zaporizhzhia plant in the first weeks of Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Both sides have accused each other of firing or taking other actions that could trigger a nuclear accident. The plant's administration said on Telegram that a civilian had been killed in the shelling, but that no plant employees or members of the emergency services had been injured. Reuters could not independently verify the Russian report. The station, Europe's biggest nuclear power plant, is not operating but still requires power to keep its nuclear fuel cool. The plant's Russia-installed management said radiation levels remained within normal levels and the situation was under control. - Reuters

13MP to deliver key link roads, flood mitigation projects for Sibu, says rep
Chieng expresses hope that the implementation of these projects will begin under Rolling Plan 1 of 13MP. – Photo by Peter Boon SIBU (Aug 2): The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) is set to bring significant development to Sibu with the approval of several new link roads and flood mitigation projects, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng revealed. He noted that the initiatives have already secured approval, with necessary funding allocated for implementation. 'The 13MP is very important for Sibu especially, as it includes plans for several new connecting roads,' he said. Among the projects is a new link road connecting Hann's Residence Estate to Airport Road, passing through Bukit Lima Forest Park. Chieng expressed hope that the implementation of these projects will begin under Rolling Plan 1 of 13MP. 'With the rollout of 13MP, I am hoping that these link roads in Sibu will be realised soon,' he said at a Father's Day gift distribution event at the N51 Bukit Assek Service Centre today. Chieng also disclosed plans for another link road connecting Jalan Kong Yit Khim and Salim. However, due to high utility relocation costs, an alternative route connecting Jalan Bukit Penyau and Jalan Salim has been proposed. He added that a request had been made to the Land and Survey Department to establish road connections for Jalan Maling. 'They will construct a proper road link. All of these are part of 13MP. This shows the significance of 13MP (to Sibu),' he said. Chieng further highlighted the second phase of the Jalan Oya upgrading project as part of 13MP. 'In the Pelawan constituency of Datuk Michael Tiang, another new link road has also been planned under the development initiative.' During the recent State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting in May, Chieng proposed the Sentosa Flood Mitigation Project under 13MP. He said the proposal was well-received by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also the Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government. Chieng also revealed that the Jerrwit Flood Mitigation Project – designed to protect areas stretching from Kampung Saujana to Ek Dee – is anticipated to be implemented under Rolling Plan 2 of 13MP. He assured the public that these projects are no longer at the proposal stage, as necessary approvals have been granted and funding allocated. 'It's just a matter of time. Many projects are still in the design phase. The funds are available. Once 13MP is underway, they can begin the tender process. 'Hopefully, many of these projects will fall under Rolling Plan 1 so they can start sooner. Otherwise, if it's under Rolling Plan 2, it will only commence in 2027,' he said. For reference, Rolling Plan 1 refers to the first year of the 13MP, which spans from 2026 to 2030. Chieng also mentioned that Sibu needs more link roads to effectively ease traffic congestion. 'Some have proposed flyovers, but that alone will not completely solve congestion. It will just move the bottleneck elsewhere. 'However, with these new link roads, traffic congestion will be alleviated,' said Chieng. The Public Works Department (JKR), he said, has identified two potential flyover sites – the traffic junction in front of Farley Commercial Centre and the traffic junction between Jalan Deshon and Jalan Ling Kai Cheng. 13MP flood mitigation projects joseph chieng link roads Sibu
