Family of Southport attack victim Bebe King say her ‘light and spark' live on a year after her death

ITV News6 hours ago
The family of Southport attack victim Bebe King has said her "light, care and spark" live on as it approaches a year since her death.
The six-year-old was killed along with Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, when Axel Rudakubana launched his knife attack on the Taylor Swift-themed dance class in the town on 29 July last year.
On Monday 28 July, a post on the Instagram account of Bebe's Hive referenced the youngster's 'favourite musical' Wicked with the quote: 'Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.'
Bebe's Hive was set up by her family to provide support for grieving children through creativity and connection.
The post, which appeared to have been written by Bebe's mother Lauren, referred to her as 'my mini me' and 'her dad's soulmate'.
It said: 'It's time for us to take the space we need. To feel, to breathe, to hold each other close. To just be.
'To be able to create something so purposeful, so needed, has given us a strength we didn't know we had. A reason. A focus.
'We love and thank every single person who has helped us carry this.
'I feel her with me every day and that feeling is what keeps us going.
'Her light, her care, her spark – it lives on, and we'll continue it for as long as we can.
'To our incredible family and friends – thank you for keeping us afloat, while trying to keep yourselves above water. Thank you for loving Bebe so deeply and for riding this forever journey with us.
'To our amazing community – I don't think you realise what you've done. To everyone further, we also thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
'Your kindness has saved us.
'To Elsie and Alice, we never had the chance to meet you, but we feel like we know you. Your light shines so brightly through your parents, and we're proud to walk alongside them.'
In a reference to the Taylor Swift song Bejeweled, the post went on to say: 'Our girls' energy will continue to shimmer.
'And to every brave child, every adult, every family whose lives were changed forever that day – we see you and we're sending you so much love.'
A video of Bebe dancing and playing with a bubble machine accompanied the caption, along with photos of her.
Sefton Council has asked people not to lay flowers to mark the anniversary of the attack but instead to consider donating to causes including Bebe's Hive, as well as Elsie's Story and Alice's Wonderdance, which were set up in the victim's memories.
A three-minute silence will be held in the town at 3pm on Tuesday 29 July.

Chris Hughes hits out at 'disgusting' trolling of girlfriend JoJo Siwa

It appears Chris Hughes is done biting his tongue against backlash to his relationship with JoJo Siwa. The Love Island star, 32, and Dance Moms alum, 22, have been a hot topic of gossip since getting together after meeting on the latest series of Celebrity Big Brother. Alas, sharing personal snaps galore from their getaways and giving the internet an intimate look into their romance has also led to trolling. But Chris, who has already confessed to wanting to marry and settle down with JoJo after a month of dating, has had enough. Taking to his Instagram Story this afternoon, the TV personality responded with a lengthy clapback after one commenter hit out at JoJo's music career. Named James, the individual's bio says he works in music artist management. In his original comment, he made a sarcastic quip about JoJo's community consisting of '60 comments and 11 likes', adding: 'It's no wonder the last single performed how it did'. Going to town with his reply, Chris wrote: 'I hate to be this person, but rn respectfully I don't care. Trolls can be trolls, do your thing, whatever, carry on. They'll always exist, they'll always run with whatever narrative they want to push, and jump on bandwagons for social validation, you're always going to have them. 'This is different though, this doesn't sit well with me and this is disturbing.' He continued to say the man in question neither knows nor follows him or JoJo, yet 'comes out of his way to [Chris's] latest post, creates a thread of 100+ comments of hatred in a now deleted comment'. 'The thing I find really ugly is that, through gritted teeth, this person is a music industry professional. Not your average troll, someone who's worked with the likes of Modest, Global and so on, someone who has worked with artists and performers, understands the pressures, the industry, how rewarding and how tough it can be, yet feels completely comfortable to want to shame other people within their industry absolutely NEEDLESSLY, just off a couples Instagram post.' 'I find it disturbing because it's cowardly,' Chris blasted. 'It's unprofessional and it's rude and shock it's now deleted, and I knew it would be, just gross. He tried to justify it being fine because the post popped up on his explore page. That was his validation.' Concluding his rant, Chris addresses 'James' directly, saying: 'I hope your fellow industry professionals don't unnecessarily target you one day for absolutely no reason and try to belittle or put down your work, and I meant that. It's not nice, it's not pretty and it's just not called for.' In a declaration of his feelings for JoJo, he added: 'Do better, just don't come for my person in the way you have, unprovoked, on a professional scale or any other music artist for that matter. Thank you.' Chris wasn't done there, though, as the ITV Racing host also shut down commenters branding him 'creepy' for sharing a 10-year age gap with JoJo. The presenter posted a carousel of pics to his 2.2million followers over the weekend from his latest trip to the States to spend time with JoJo and her family. His snaps showed the lovebirds cuddling up by the pool, kissing on dinner dates, playing golf and tennis, and larking around in a water fight alongside the caption: 'just everything 🤍 missing you🏌🏼‍♀️🫶🏼🏌🏽🎾🐕' Taking issue with the post, however, a woman named Pauline wrote underneath: 'Does anybody else find this creepy'. Not mincing his words, Chris replied: 'No Pauline, you're miserable, p**s off kindly'. After she retorted with, 'lol we see how long it lasts', Chris added: 'Yeah again, you don't need to speak, you don't follow me, respectfully do one thank you.' And it continued further, with a social media user named Liz seemingly accusing Chris of using JoJo for clout, writing: 'Mate sort yourself out. You would do anything for fame'. Jumping to defend him, a Chris fan responded with: 'Oh Liz, imagine hating someone who's just living and happy. Misery aren't you.' Liz replied: 'I don't hate anybody sweetheart I just live in the real world,' provoking Chris to reply with: 'The real world! online bullies are the real world apparently.' Chris, who returned to the UK days ago to attend Jack P. Shepherd's wedding, recently professed that he 'can't keep his hands off' JoJo, as he gave his first interview on their romance. Speaking to The Sun, he added that he tells the Karma hitmaker he loves her 'every day'. 'She's the last person I speak to at night and the first I speak to when I wake up,' he said. More Trending 'I can't explain it, but it's a safe love. It's like a natural high.' As for JoJo, the feeling is clearly mutual, as she often refers to her boyfriend with the nickname 'my sweet Christopher'. She also told The Guardian that they have a 'beautiful connection'. 'I'm absolutely head over heels for him, and he's the same way.' Got a story? Mobile billboard of Trump and Epstein photo 'welcomes' President

A mobile billboard of a photo of Donald Trump with the late convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein has been driving around Aberdeen to 'welcome' the US President to the north of Scotland. Trump has been visiting his Turnberry golf resort in South Ayrshire over the weekend. After meeting with the Prime Minister on Monday morning, the President is travelling to visit his other Scottish golf course, the Trump International Golf Links, in Aberdeenshire. A campaign group aimed at 'taking on billionaires' has put the image of the President posing with Epstein on a mobile digital billboard along with the words: 'Welcome to Scotland, Donald'. 'We tried to get close to Trump's golf course with this van showing Trump with convicted sex trafficker Epstein. The police stopped us,' the Everyone Hates Elon campaign group posted on Instagram on Monday. 'We'll be driving it around all day anyway, after all, it's just a real photo of some friends.' Asked about the Epstein case during a press conference at Turnberry, Trump told reporters it was 'a hoax that's been built up way beyond proportion'. 'I can say this, those files were run by the worst scum on Earth,' he said. 'They were run by (former FBI director James) Comey, they were run by (former US attorney general Merrick) Garland, they were run by (former president Joe) Biden, and all of the people that actually ran the government.' He said: 'Those files were run by these people. They were run by my enemy. If there was anything in there, they would have used them for the election.' Trump had previously been friends with Epstein, who was arrested in 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges. Epstein killed himself in his cell in New York City while awaiting trial. His former girlfriend, the British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, was later convicted at trial and sentenced to 20 years in prison for sex trafficking, conspiracy and transportation of a minor for illegal sexual activity. The president also said: 'I'm not a drawing person', as he was asked about a letter to Epstein, written more than two decades ago, that reportedly included a sketched outline of a naked woman. He said: 'I'm not a drawing person. I don't do drawings. Sometimes you would say, would you draw a building? And I'll draw four lines and a little roof, you know, for a charity stuff, but I'm not a drawing person. 'I don't do drawings of women, that I can tell you.' Questioned whether he had been asked to give Maxwell a pardon, Trump told reporters: 'Well, I'm allowed to give her a pardon, but nobody's approached me with it. Nobody's asked me about it. 'It's in the news – that aspect of it – but right now, it would be inappropriate to talk about it.' Trump also insisted he had never been to Epstein's private island, Little Saint James.
