Javed Akhtar recommends these books to rethink India's past and politics
In an interview, Javed Akhtar, one of India's most influential lyricists and public intellectuals, revealed he is simultaneously engrossed in two books. Far from light reading, Akhtar's selections are a testament to his ongoing engagement with the country's political and historical tensions. At a time when public memory is fiercely contested, Akhtar, in an interview with Lallantop, revealed that he has turned to two works: Muslims Against Partition of India by Shamsul Islam and The New Icon: Savarkar and the Facts by Arun Shourie. One excavates the erased history of Muslim leaders who resisted Partition; the other critically reexamines the contested legacy of VD Savarkar, the Hindu ideologue. This account that brings to light the largely forgotten Muslim individuals and organisations who opposed the creation of Pakistan before 1947. Drawing on archival records, Urdu poetry, and political speeches, the book challenges the dominant narrative that portrays the Partition as a unanimously Muslim demand. It documents the efforts of leaders and groups who actively fought for a united India. It also revisits significant events like the 1857 War of Independence and the Azad Muslim Conference of 1940, offering evidence of a secular, inclusive Muslim nationalism that was ultimately sidelined by both colonial policies and dominant communal politics. The second edition of the book includes rare photos and newly unearthed material from the National Archives of India, offering a nuanced counter-history of the independence movement. The books is a critical investigation into the life and legacy of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, one of the most controversial figures in India's nationalist history. Shourie examines Savarkar's writings, statements, and actions, as well as British government archives, to question the mythology that has built up around him. The book looks into claims such as Savarkar's escape attempt in Marseilles, his alleged friendship with Mahatma Gandhi, and the controversial mercy petitions he submitted during his incarceration in the Andamans. It also explores his ideological stances on Hindutva, Hinduism, and the kind of state he envisioned. With sharp analysis and a historian's skepticism, Shourie raises pressing questions about Savarkar's role in the freedom struggle, his cooperation with the British, and his influence on current political narratives. The book seeks to separate fact from fiction at a time when Savarkar's image is being revived and rebranded in Indian politics.

Suggesting Tipu conceptualised KRS dam is pandering to vote bank, says BJP
Bengaluru: Opposition BJP Monday accused Congress of distorting Karnataka's history and disrespecting the legacy of the erstwhile Mysore royal family, especially Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, over recent remarks crediting Tipu Sultan with laying the foundation for Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) dam. The controversy erupted when social welfare minister HC Mahadevappa, in charge of Mysuru district, during an event in Srirangapatna Sunday, said, "Tipu Sultan was the first to conceptualise the dam and laid the foundation stone, but nobody has the courage to say this. BR Ambedkar has said that those who don't know history cannot create history." Reacting strongly, BJP state president BY Vijayendra accused Congress of trying to rewrite well-documented history. In a post, he said, "Tipu died in 1799, while the dam was planned more than a century later in 1908." "From the beginning, CM Siddaramaiah has shown contempt towards the royal family. Just recently, MLC Yathindra stated that his father (Siddaramaiah) was greater than Nalwadi Krishna Raja Wadiyar. Now, Mahadevappa has insulted the legacy and sacrifice behind the construction of the Kannambadi dam by crediting Tipu Sultan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like It's Genius for Learning Languages [See Why] Talkpal AI Undo The story of the Mysuru royal family's sacrifice is remembered even today in every household of the erstwhile Mysore kingdom. " Vijayendra said the dam project was conceived in 1908, work began in 1911, and was completed in 1932, overcoming British opposition and financial constraints. He recalled how Nalwadi's mother, Vanivilasa Sannidhana, and wife, Krishnavilasa Sannidhana, sold their jewellery to fund the project. He also credited engineer Sir M Visvesvaraya and others with bringing the project to fruition. "Nalwadi's contribution was so profound that Mahatma Gandhi referred to him as a Rajarshi," he added. Opposition leader, R Ashoka, alleged that the Siddaramaiah govt is plotting to rename KRS as Tipu Sultan Sagar. Meanwhile, some Mysuru-based historians noted that while Tipu did express interest in building water works, there is no credible evidence that he conceived or laid the foundation stone for KRS dam . Historians say there is indeed an inscription to the effect that Tipu was keen on building a dam but say the reservoir in Mandya was conceptualised and built under the patronage of Krishnaraja Wadiyar.

50% of Bhandara city located on nazul land, govt to regularize these properties: Bawankule
Bhandara: Revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said that nearly 50% of Bhandara city is settled on nazul land without ownership rights, and assured that the govt is preparing a plan to regularize these properties within a year through drone surveys. He also said that re-survey of sand resources in Bhandara district will soon be undertaken, as official records underestimate the availability of the material. On sand mining, Bawankule noted that while government documents mention only 7 lakh brass of sand in the district, the actual figure is much higher. "Minimum 25 lakh brass sand is available," he said. The minister added that he has instructed the district collector to use technology for the re-survey. "Only after the survey we shall apply for environment clearance. We will also study what was mined (other than sand) in the last 20 years and estimate the loss to the govt," he said. The auctions for sand mining will be held once the survey is completed. Bawankule admitted that no ownership process for nazul land has begun in Bhandara's seven municipal councils. "By ownership I mean they have not got the property cards yet. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 22 Illustrations of a Husband and Wife in Everyday Life Watch More Undo In rural areas we will use drone survey and give them property cards. For Bhandara city also we will do the same thing. We are working on this proposal and within a year this should be done," he said. He further said mapping of 'pandhan' roads in villages, last conducted during the British era in the 1930s, has also begun. "Every other road has a number, now we will give a number to every 'pandhan' road. This will help in proceeding with development in a proper way," Bawankule said. He added that trees will be planted along both sides of these roads to deter encroachments and strengthen the plantation drive. The minister also stressed the importance of direct benefit transfer (DBT) to ensure that beneficiaries receive govt incentives. "From Tuesday, our revenue department will send staffers to every village and every resident. Their DBT documentation will be checked. If someone is not registered, they will be helped," he said. Bawankule further warned of strict action against encroachments on govt land, particularly where commercial complexes have come up. On curbing the sand mafia, he said a policy for artificial sand has already been rolled out. "In the next three years, 100% of sand used for PWD projects will be artificial. Every district will get 50 crushers," he said.
