‘Matter of great pride': Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami to launch sports university, 23 academies across 8 cities

NEW DELHI: Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is set to launch two initiatives for the development of sports and athletes, marking the fifth year of his tenure. The first is the establishment of a sports university in Haldwani, whose foundation is to be laid on Sports Day, and the other is the establishment of 23 sports academies across eight cities in the state. The academies will be established in cities like Dehradun, Haldwani, and Haridwar, where sports infrastructure was developed during the National Games. 'It is a matter of great pride that Uttarakhand is now being recognized as a land of sports. After the grand hosting of the National Games, the state has developed a positive sports environment. The morale of athletes is high, and they are performing well. The government will continue to take big decisions for the development of sports and implement them effectively,' said Pushkar Singh Dhami. The initiatives are taken up to better maintain the sports infrastructure that has already been created and to establish a solid platform for training athletes. Rapid progress is being made in both projects taken up by the government, with the notification for the university already being issued. The 38th National Games were held in Uttarakhand, with the state scoring a century of medals and ranking seventh in the medal tally. The event ultimately led to the establishment of sports infrastructure, marking a milestone in the field of sports. A new sports policy was announced in the state in 2021 that focused on encouraging athletes and included a provision of incentives ranging from Rs 1 crore to Rs 2 crore for Olympic medal winners. The incentive amount has been doubled since then. Government jobs are also offered to athletes who win medals in national and international competitions.

Dhami to Gift Athletes a Boost, Sports to Flourish and Thrive

Construction of 23 Sports Academies and a Sports University progressing rapidly in eight cities Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, in the fifth year of his tenure, is set to gift not just one but two major initiatives for the development of sports and athletes. The first is the establishment of a Sports University in Haldwani, with preparations underway to lay the foundation stone on Sports Day. The second is the opening of 23 sports academies across the state. These academies will be established in eight cities including Dehradun, Haridwar, and Haldwani, where sports activities were held and infrastructure was developed during the National Games. These initiatives are expected to bring two key benefits: 1. Better maintenance of the sports infrastructure already created. 2. A strong platform for training athletes. In the fourth year of Chief Minister Dhami's tenure, Uttarakhand made a significant leap in the field of sports. The grand hosting of the National Games greatly enhanced the state's stature in the sports world. CM Dhami is committed to maintaining this positive momentum in his fifth year. Whether it is the construction of the Sports University in Haldwani or the opening of 23 sports academies in eight cities, both projects are progressing rapidly. The notification for the university has already been issued, and the government is working swiftly to implement both major projects. Two Major Steps That Brought Glory 01 – 38th National Games In Uttarakhand's silver jubilee year, the successful hosting of the 38th National Games on its soil was one of the Dhami government's biggest sports achievements. It was a grand event, and Uttarakhand's athletes also delivered an excellent performance. In the previous National Games held in Goa, the state won only 24 medals. This time, it scored a century of medals and secured the 7th position in the medal tally. The event also led to the expansion of sports facilities and the creation of world-class infrastructure, which will be a milestone in the field of sports. 02 – New Sports Policy The new sports policy announced in 2021 focused especially on encouraging athletes. It includes a provision of incentives ranging from ₹1 crore to ₹2 crore for Olympic medal winners. Athletes who win medals in international and national competitions are being offered government jobs. The incentive amount has been doubled and scholarships are also being awarded. A unique aspect of this policy is that even participating in major tournaments makes an athlete eligible for incentives — regardless of whether they win a medal or not. 'It is a matter of great pride that Uttarakhand is now being recognized as a land of sports. After the grand hosting of the National Games, the state has developed a positive sports environment. The morale of athletes is high, and they are performing well. The government will continue to take big decisions for the development of sports and implement them effectively.' — Pushkar Singh Dhami, Chief Minister

The festivities began with a vibrant flash mob performance by Deeksha Dance Studio, setting an electrifying tone for the day. Contestants were ushered in with warmth and enthusiasm as hydration zones and warm-up areas opened, gearing them up for a spectacular day of action. Before the contests began, the audience was treated to a captivating series of cultural demonstrations. The grace and strength of Mallakhamb athletes, including national gold medalists Rishab Ghubde and Sanavi Vaibhav Desai, mesmerized all with their awe-inspiring pole and rope acrobatics. This was followed by a flawless gymnastics' performance by champions Nishka Agarwal and Surabhi Prasanna, setting a high bar for athleticism. A soulful Artistic Yoga sequence by Guru K. Dattatreya and team, and a powerful Thang-Ta martial arts demonstration from Manipur, led by Guru Sapam Inaobi Singh, further brought Indian heritage to the forefront. The artistry of Anup Kumar Yama's roller-skating troupe added flair, while the Isha Foundation's Yoga Namaskar session grounded contestants in mindfulness before the games began. The ceremonial torch was lit by the Honourable Minister for Prohibition & Excise, Tourism, Culture & Archaeology, Shri Jupally Krishna Rao, officially declaring the Sports Day open, amidst resonating applause and the echoes of the National Anthem. But the day was not only about elegance—it was also about endurance, agility, and global spirit. Teams representing Americas & Caribbean, Africa, Europe, and Asia & Oceania competed across a series of exhilarating events—from badminton knockouts, shot put, and football penalty shootouts to brainy battles in chess and adrenaline-pumping basketball attempts. A heart-pounding Shuttle Fitness Run tested each team's synergy and stamina, while the badminton finals, and a surprise round of kabaddi, energized the cheering crowd. A thrilling sprint relay, covering two laps, gave one final display of athletic excellence before the grand finale. As the clock neared noon, a spirited Zumba session had everyone on their feet, led by a professional instructor. Contestants danced with joy, pride, and unity—capping the day with laughter and rhythm. In a touching culmination, all contestants assembled for a group photo and medal/token distribution, preserving a timeless memory of their sporting journey. Earlier in the week, Miss World 2025 contestants from Asia visited the majestic Pillalamarri banyan tree, a living symbol of Telangana's 700-year-old heritage. Their awe was evident as they immersed themselves in the region's rich cultural legacy—joined by Minister Jupally Krishna Rao, who shared insights into the state's unique traditions and natural wonders. This year's Sports Day was more than a contest—it was a tribute to harmony, strength, and the power of women to inspire across borders. With every race run and every goal scored, Miss World 2025 proved that beauty, indeed, lies in the unity of purpose and the courage to compete with compassion.
