Tay-Liew pair secure victory in WCGC Malaysia second qualifier
KUALA LUMPUR: Tay Cher Haw and Liew Vin Sern delivered a standout performance to clinch the second qualifying round of the World Corporate Golf Challenge (WCGC) Malaysia, held yesterday at Tropicana Golf & Country Club, Petaling Jaya.
Representing Seng Haw Timber Sdn Bhd, Cher Haw (handicap 9) and Vin Sern (18) amassed an impressive 49 points in the Two Ball Best Ball Stableford format to outplay 124 participants and secure the title at the Enotech-sponsored event.
Their victory also earned them a spot in the WCGC Malaysia National Final, scheduled for 25 September at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club, alongside the top four.
Fourth place went to Muhammad Feyyaz (9) and Amirul Adli Senu (5) of Feyyaz Sports Group, also with 45 points on OCB, while Muhammad Firdaus Said (5) and Mohd Azwan (17) of Sinar Jernih Sdn Bhd secured fifth spot under the same condition.
In the first qualifier held last month at Seri Selangor Golf Club, five teams had already booked their tickets to the national final.
They include Syah Rizal Basri and Mohd Rizal Mohd Sahibek (Megar Jaya 1), Hafizi Zainal and Abdul Malik Hasim (Event Pro Venture), Nor Azhar Mohamad Noor and Mohd Izzad Ibrahim (NA Sales & Services), Draman and Khairun (Mega Bina Trading), and Roslan Piei and Megat Shariffudin Shaharuddin (InfraSel Sdn Bhd).
The third leg of WCGC Malaysia will take place at Glenmarie Golf & Country Club on 22 July, followed by the fourth at Templer Park Country Club on 21 August.
The champion of the Malaysian final will represent the country at the WCGC World Final, to be held at PGA Anying Golf Club in Shanghai, China, from 19–23 October.
The tournament's Royal Patron, Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, officially launched WCGC Malaysia at Glenmarie Hotel & Golf Resort on 23 April.
WCGC Malaysia is supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), Malaysian Golf Association (MGA), Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI), and the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS).

However, it was Gareth Furlong who proved to be Malaysia's thorn in the side when he scored the winning goal with just 10 minutes remaining in the match. Malaysia's 6th placing is a step up from the team's 7th place in the 2024 tournament held in Gniezno, Poland. In the match for seventh place also held today, Japan defeated South Africa 2-1. National head coach Sarjit Singh said his players' performance was still far from satisfactory, citing a lack of speed and missed chances to kill off the game at the right moment. 'The young players need to learn. We cannot afford to make mistakes when we're leading 1-0 and thus we paid the price. But it's okay, the good thing is every player's commitment on the pitch was good. Only thing we need to improve is our marking in defence,' he told reporters after the match.

Hockey great Kevin Nunis dies at 65
Hockey legend Kevin Nunis represented Malaysia at the Olympics and Asian Games and later became a coach. (Instagram pic) PETALING JAYA : Former national hockey player and Olympian Kevin Nunis died in hospital today at the age of 65. His brother, Graig Nunis, said in an Instagram post that Kevin breathed his last at Hospital Kuala Lumpur this evening. Nunis had been recuperating from surgery on May 21 the second since he was diagnosed with a bacterial infection in the blood last month, according to the national athletes foundation (Yakeb). He was discharged on May 2 but was admitted again two weeks later after his health deteriorated and underwent another surgery. Nunis, who was born in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, later converted to Islam and took the name Muhammad Khairy Nunis Abdullah. His son, Muhammad Karl Iskandar Nunis, a television sports journalist, said final rites for his father would be performed at 8am tomorrow. Nunis was a member of Malaysia's hockey team at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and also represented Malaysia at the 1982 and 1986 Asian Games in India and Korea. After retiring, he ventured into coaching and once coached the Terengganu and Pahang hockey teams. He was also head coach of the Malaysian Hockey Confederation's national hockey development programme.

Decision to review 13MP not made in haste, says Fahmi
Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said the prime minister had asked all ministries to study the draft of the 13MP and submit their feedback to the economy ministry. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : The government's decision to review the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) is not a hasty reaction, but one that has gone through a discussion process over the past two weeks, said communications minister Fahmi Fadzil. Fahmi said the discussions began with a draft presented by the economy ministry's secretary-general to the Cabinet. 'We've actually discussed this. I mentioned (previously) that the prime minister had issued a directive to review the draft presented by the economy ministry's secretary-general. 'Any policy, programme or decision must first be presented at a Cabinet meeting. So, on Friday last week (June 20), the prime minister requested all ministries to study the draft and submit their feedback to the economy ministry,' the government spokesman said at a press conference after launching the Nadi Aspirasi Nasional Bersama Anak Muda programme organised by the community communications department (J-Kom) here today. Following that, he said, a special Cabinet meeting was held last Monday to review the feedback from the ministries. 'During the meeting, it was found that many matters raised by the ministries needed to be considered by the economy ministry in drawing up the 13MP document. 'That was one of the reasons why, at last Wednesday's Cabinet meeting – the latest one – it was decided that finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan would take on the duties and functions of the economy minister,' he said. Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli was reported to have questioned the government's move to review the 13MP, calling it a hasty response to social media criticism. This followed chief secretary to the government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar's announcement yesterday that Amir had been tasked with 'reviewing and revamping' the 13MP, while concurrently performing the duties and functions of the economy minister, effective immediately. The 13MP is scheduled to be tabled in Parliament on July 31.
