Sultan Bin Ahmed commends UoS for earning ‘Platinum Rating'
This, he noted, contributes to the university's progress and solidifies its standing as one of the leading institutions of higher education both within and beyond the UAE.
This came on the occasion of the UoS becoming the first university in the Middle East to achieve Platinum Rating under the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) administered by AASHE.
The university received a full 100% score in the category of sustainable education and research, reflecting its strong commitment to sustainability across operations and planning, as well as its role in preparing a generation conscious of sustainable practices. This achievement aligns with the UAE's and Sharjah's strategic agendas on sustainability and carbon neutrality through education, research, innovation, and sustainable management and planning.
The UoS now joins an elite group of only 15 universities worldwide to have received this top-tier Platinum rating – including 8 universities from the United States, 6 from Canada, and now 1 from the Middle East.
His Highness congratulated the Board of Trustees, university leadership, academic, administrative, and technical staff, as well as students, on this new milestone, which adds to the university's impressive record of accomplishments over the years. These successes are the result of a well-defined strategy, vision, and the concerted efforts of the UoS community in providing every possible support to students, who remain at the heart of the university's educational mission.
H.H. emphasised the university's commitment to offering students the best possible experiences by continuously enhancing the academic and research environment – from curriculum development, research opportunities, student activities, and innovation support, to the quality of faculty and staff.
This is all done through the lens of sustainability in higher education, a global trend that is reshaping the future of universities and colleges. As such, the UOS continues to advance in global rankings across a range of academic and scientific fields.
The University's award came following its assessment under the STARS rating programme, a transparent and comprehensive system for measuring and tracking sustainability performance in higher education institutions worldwide. The programme encourages institutions to pursue long-term sustainability goals, fosters continuous improvement, and builds more diverse and high-performing university communities committed to excellence in education.
The UoS joined the STARS programme in 2021, earning the Silver rating in its first year, then becoming the first Arab university to receive a Gold rating in 2022, and now achieving the Platinum rating, the highest possible level – a clear affirmation of the university's leadership in sustainability.

In his closing remarks, Al Musallam, said: 'The Second Heritage Conference, with its theme 'Folklore in the Eyes of the Other,' represented a milestone in the journey of heritage knowledge. It opened wide windows onto travel literature and revealed subtle, multifaceted aspects of how others receive our folklore. These sessions and scholarly papers represent a profound step in re-reading Western texts with an Arab critical eye, restoring the image and its balance, and rehabilitating our cultural voice.' RECOMMENDATIONS: The 'Second Heritage Conference' issued several scientific and cultural recommendations to enhance studies on travel literature and representations of the 'other' in popular heritage. Participants urged a reevaluation of the writings of travellers and Orientalists using contemporary scientific criticism methodologies. They advocated for analytical comparisons between groups of travellers from various geographical regions and similar time periods to derive a more realistic portrayal and compare it with available local studies. The attendees emphasised the need to establish practical laboratories for translating Western research and studies on travel literature and forming scientific committees to review untranslated travel accounts, particularly Russian works. Among the recommendations was the proposal to extend the conference from two to three days and to publish the presented research in a scientific book. WAM

8-year-old Aisha crowned champion of Arab Reading Challenge 2025 in Iraq
Aisha Nizar Nazim, a student, won the title of champion in the ninth edition of the Arab Reading Challenge in Iraq. A total of 1,339,270 students from 38,100 schools took part in the competition, which was overseen by 16,310 supervisors. The students played a key role in the success of the ninth edition of the world's largest Arabic-language reading event, organised by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives Foundation since its launch in 2015. The 8-year-old girl, Aisha Nazim, is a student at Zaha Hadid School for Excellence in Nineveh, was announced as the winner during the closing ceremony of the ninth edition of the Arab Reading Challenge. The ceremony was held in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, and was attended by Dr Ibrahim Namis Al Jubouri, the Minister of Education, Adnan Al Sarraj, Advisor to the Prime Minister for Education Affairs, Mohammed Dayea Al Azzawi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education for Administrative Affairs and Chairman of the Higher Committee, Mohammed Saleh Al Taniji, Acting Chargé d'Affaires at the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Baghdad, Dr Fawzan Al Khalidi, Director of Programmes and Initiatives at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives Foundation. Also in attendance were a number of officials and educators in charge of the Arab Reading Challenge initiative and a large crowd of parents of the participating students. A 6-year-old girl, Maria Hassan Ajil, a student at Al-Far'a Girls' School in the Salah Al Din district, was announced as the winner of the People of Determination category at the closing ceremony. She was one of 450 students who participated in the qualifying rounds. The Top ten The judging committees selected Aisha Nizar Nazim as the champion of the ninth Arab Reading Challenge at the Republic of Iraq level from the following top ten finalists: Muntadhar Ahmed Mardan (fifth grade, Al Insaf School, Karbala region), Akram Khalil Abdullah (tenth grade, Al Dhakirin Intermediate School, Kirkuk), Fatima Mohammed (eleventh grade, Shams Al Hurriyah Preparatory School, Najaf), Yusr Hamza Farhan (eleventh grade, Al Nabaa Al Azim Secondary School, Qadisiyah), Rawan Muntadhar Mansour, (the tenth grade at Haifa Intermediate School for Girls, Babylon), Hadi Hassan Hadi (the eleventh grade at Al Nahrawan School for Boys (Rusafa 3), Aya Ziad Subhi (the eleventh grade at Al Rafidain School in Kirkuk), Hussein Ali Ahmed ( the tenth grade at Al Dhakirin School in Kirkuk), and Haider Ali Abdulaziz (the seventh grade at Al Muhwebin School in Najaf.
