Cops receive reports on alleged strangling of cat in Penang
GEORGE TOWN : Police have confirmed receiving two reports on the alleged abuse of a cat at the Pasar Lebuh Cecil food court, which has been shared widely on social media since yesterday.
Timur Laut police chief Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the first report was lodged by a woman in her 20s at 4.05pm on Thursday, claiming that she saw a food trader strangle a cat at 8am that day.
'A 55-year-old food trader there also lodged a police report yesterday denying the allegation against him,' Bernama reported him as saying today.
He said following a preliminary investigation, the case has been referred to the Penang Island City Council for further action.
The incident has received widespread attention online, with many members of the public and animal activists calling for an investigation.

(Pexels pic) PETALING JAYA : A youth has claimed trial to raping his cousin sister in Tuaran, Sabah, on two occasions, once when she was seven and five years later when she was 12. The 19-year-old was charged in the Kota Kinabalu sessions court with committing the offences on the victim sometime in 2019 and 2024, Daily Express reported. The charges were framed under Section 376 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 20 years in prison and whipping upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Bryan Francis had urged the court not to allow the accused bail as he was a relative of the victim and posed a 'risk' to witnesses in the case. Lawyers acting for the accused pleaded for bail, saying their client is unemployed, had voluntarily come forward to assist in investigations, and also had to care for his parents who were ill. Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan allowed the accused bail at RM3,000 but ordered him to report to the nearest police station every month and not to have any contact with the victim.

JPJ nets 1,194 offenders in July seat belt blitz on buses
KLANG, July 23 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued a total of 1,194 summonses to bus drivers and passengers nationwide under the Special Operation on Seat Belt Usage which began on July 1. JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said of the total, 1,108 summonses were issued to passengers, followed by 62 to drivers, and 24 cases involved the failure to install seat belts. He said among the reasons given to avoid being fined were that they were unaware seat belt usage was mandatory and that enforcement had already been gazetted. 'This excuse is unacceptable, as checks revealed that most bus operators and drivers have either made announcements or displayed notices reminding passengers to wear seat belts,' he said at a press conference after visiting the Pioneer Coachbuilder Sdn Bhd bus body manufacturing plant in Telok Gong here today. Aedy Fadly added that tourists or non-citizens would also not be exempted from action under existing provisions if found not wearing seat belts while on buses. However, he noted that overall compliance with seat belt usage on express and tour buses has shown improvement, thanks to proactive steps taken by bus operators to remind passengers. 'Overall, we are seeing an increase in compliance, and passengers are beginning to better understand the importance of wearing seat belts,' he said. — Bernama
