Kennon Lumber Co. opens in Elgin

Yahoo02-04-2025
ELGIN — A new retail lumber store is opening in Elgin.
The Union County Chamber of Commerce hosts a ribbon-cutting to mark the opening of Kennon Lumber Co., 810 Inkwood St., Elgin. The ceremony is at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 5. More details will be available on Kennon's Facebook page.
'The public is warmly invited to attend our soft opening and browse through our beautiful showroom and outside planter displays,' Tyler Kennon, sole proprietor said. 'Every wall inside our building will display the cedar products that we offer.'
There will be a drawing that day so the public may enter their names for the door prize, a fully assembled cedar planter with lattice valued at $150. The winner of the prize will be announced at 5 p.m. on Kennon's Facebook page.
After the soft opening, normal business hours will be Tuesday through Saturday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and he will adjust that as needed. The store number is 541-805-1190.
'My hope is that the business can keep busy enough so that he can employ a couple of people and be open six days a week and regular business hours,' he said.
Kennon hails from La Grande, and in February, he purchased the 4,000 square-foot building on 3.8 acres on Inkwood Street from Elgin High School. Kennon Lumber occupies half of the building.
'We'll see how things go after the first year in business,' Kennon said. 'Then we might get another retailer in the other half of the building, maybe someone who deals with farm feed and hardware. If that can happen, that would be great because right now people in Elgin have to travel to La Grande to buy a box of screws.'
He said he has worked with lumber his entire life, but as far as the retail side of lumber is concerned, this venture is a first for him.
'Prior to this, I worked as a handyman, small contractor doing building maintenance for a lot of AirBNBs and commercial structures,' Kennon said. 'I'm also a farmer, rancher, horse rider — all of those things, and I have livestock and horses.'
Kennon and his wife, Kylie, and children relocated from La Grande to 40 acres on Cricket Flat, where they live in a 750 square foot cabin 'that is fully sided in our cedar siding,' Kennon said.
Kennon has a private investor, formerly from Union County, who owns and operates a lumber mill in Northern California. This mill supplies Kennon Lumber Co. with cedar, pine and fir wood products.
'We can do custom orders, and I can submit them to the mill and have it up here in a couple of weeks,' Kennon said. 'That's interesting to bring up here because I do not see any real wood siding up here anymore, and I'd really like to bring some of it back.'
The couple also involve their son, Seth Kennon, in their family business. He makes the cedar picnic tables that are for sale at Kennon Lumber Company and manages the store at times.
'He is homeschooled, a math whiz, and a talented craftsman,' his father said.
In the future, Kennon Lumber Co. will create a website with a full catalog listing of products and pictures of all its wood products.
'I would say that about 75% of what I have will be cedar products of all sorts, including all kinds of cedar fencing in every shape, form, thickness and size,' Kennon said.
He also will sell cedar dimensional lumber and all kinds of cedar siding, interior and exterior that a builder or contractor would possibly want. Kennon Lumber also will sell some blue stained pine, some board and batten pine, and some fir products, but the majority, Kennon said, will be cedar siding and interior wall finishes.
The California mill will send Kennon its off-cuts, in-cuts, and scrap pieces so that Kennon and his son can build furniture, including planter boxes, Adirondack chairs, benches, swings, picnic tables and chicken coops. Cedar is a popular choice of lumber because it is insect resistant and rot resistant.
'We're big in the gardening and greenhouse stuff, too,' Kennon said. 'Because we're making these things out of smaller pieces from the mill, we can build these things more affordably.'
The inventory is rolling in. Kennon had 10 loads of lumber in from the California mill coming in before April 5. He will see how the first six months of business goes and order more inventory if needed.
Inside the store, its walls are covered with sample displays of cedar paneling and siding for homes and cabin construction. Kennon sells cedar cabins that buyers can put together because they are notched and pre-drilled. They are ideal for small sheds, accessory dwelling units and custom ordered larger sizes of cabins. He offers delivery of orders to builders and contractors on site when requested.
For more information about Kennon Lumber Co.'s lumber products, call or text at 541-805-1190 or use Facebook Messenger or email at kennonlumber@gmail.com.
'We'd like to invite the public to come in, meet us and see our showroom,' Kennon said.

Stanford Analyzes Worker Preferences For AI

workers with AI getty Many of us have internalized this notion that we're soon going to be working side-by-side with robots, or at least AI agents and entities. So as humans, what do we want these digital colleagues of ours to do? How does delegation work? A Stanford study recently went into this where authors surveyed 15,000 workers in over 100 types of jobs, to see what they really thought about AI adoption. I thought this comment by one of the authors sums up the purpose of the report well: 'As AI systems become increasingly capable, decisions about how to deploy them in the workplace are often driven by what is technically feasible,' writes project leader Yijia Shao, a Ph.D. student in the Stanford computer science department, 'yet workers are the ones most affected by these changes and the ones the economy ultimately relies on.' In other words, it's the front-line workers who are going to be most affected by these changes, so we might as well hear what they have to say (in addition to doing all kinds of market research.) There's a reason why the suggestion box is a time-tested element of business intelligence. Technology has to be a good fit – it's not something you just implement carelessly, throwing darts at a wall, and then expecting all of the people involved to sign on and go along for the ride. Some Results In terms of actual study findings, the Stanford people found that a lot of it, as Billy Joel famously sung, comes down to trust: 45% of respondents had doubts about reliability, and a reported 23% were worried about job loss. As for the types of tasks that workers favored automating, the study provides a helpful visual that shows off various must-haves against certain danger zones of adoption. Specifically, Stanford researchers split this into a 'green light zone' and a 'red light zone', as well as a 'low priority zone', and an 'opportunities zone' featuring uses that workers might want, but that are not yet technically viable. Uses in the green light zone include scheduling tasks for tax preparers, quality control reporting, and the interpretation of engineering reports. Red light uses that workers are wary of include the preparation of meeting agendas for municipal clerks, as well as the task of contacting potential vendors in logistics analysis. There's also the task of researching hardware or software products, where surveyed computer network support specialists seem to prefer to do this type of work themselves. I thought it was funny that one item in the low priority zone was 'tracing lost, delayed or misdirected baggage,' a job typically done by ticket agents. It explains a lot for those legions of hapless travelers entering their faraway AirBnBs without so much as a toothbrush. As for opportunities, it seems that technical writers would like AI to arrange for distribution of material, computer scientists will largely sign off on technology working on operational budgets, and video game designers would like production schedules automated. Why Automate? I also came across a section of the study where researchers looked at reasons for automation desire on the part of survey respondents. It seems that over 2500 survey workers want to automate a task because it will free up time for other kinds of work. About 1500 cited 'repetitive or tedious' tasks that can be automated, and about the same number suggested that automating a particular task would improve the quality of work done. A lower number suggested automating stressful or mentally draining tasks, or those that are complicated or difficult. The study also broke down tasks and processes into three control areas, including 'AI agent drives task completion', 'human drives task completion' or 'equal partnership' (and two other gradations). You can see the entire thing here , or listen to one of my favorite podcasts on the subject here . One of the headline items is a prediction of diminishing needs for analysis or information processing skills. That connects with more of a focus on managerial, interpersonal or coordination job roles. However, how this will shake out is concerning to many workers, and I would suggest that 23% of respondents worrying about job displacement is a wildly low number. Almost anybody anywhere should be worried about job displacement. Regardless of what happens in the long term, many experts are predicting extremely high unemployment in the years to come, as we work out the kinks in the biggest technological transformation of our time. Anyway, this study brings a lot of useful information to the question – what do we want AI to do for us in enterprise?

Claude can now connect to Google Drive, Canva, Slack and more — here's how to try it

No stranger to automation, Anthropic is marking a significant step forward in making AI-driven automation more accessible, especially for users without coding experience. The new Connectors Directory feature inside its Claude web and desktop apps is a dedicated space where users can easily browse, install and manage automation modules without requiring any coding knowledge. These connectors range from general integrations like opening tabs or navigating URLs, to desktop-only tools, such as controlling applications on macOS or Chrome. This feature builds on Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP), designed to make AI assistants truly hands-on for everyday tasks. Before this update, accessing MCP connectors required technical know-how and manual configuration. The new directory streamlines setup, presenting curated options in a user-friendly interface. In other words, for those of us with limited to no technical know-how, we can integrate Claude within our desktop apps and systems without needing to dive into code. This opens up powerful automation use cases such as launching playlists, managing emails or pulling text from PDFs, all orchestrated through conversational AI. Users will now see two display tabs: "All connectors" and "Desktop-only connectors." Users can preview these modules and connect with a single click. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Once enabled, Claude can interact directly with your tools, whether on your computer or in the browser, creating a seamless workflow without copy-pasting or switching apps. For example, a connector could let Claude open Chrome, search multiple tabs, extract summaries and close them automatically. Or, it could trigger local applications based on voice or chat commands. Another example that creatives may find especially useful is Claude's integration within Canva. Claude is now the first AI assistant that lets you design with Canva directly inside a chat; no switching tabs required. You can turn any conversation into a polished Canva project in seconds, or pull up and summarize Docs, Presentations and brand templates just by dropping in a link or keyword. Anthropic's Connectors Directory could change productivity as we know it. By securely accessing and interacting with applications like Google Drive, Slack and more, users can load, summarize, and act on their documents and messages directly from the AI chat. This marks a significant step toward Claude becoming a truly connected and actionable AI assistant.

It runs on the latest S10 processor and has a wide-angle OLED display for easier reading at an angle, faster charging, and media playback from its speakers. The newest MacBook Air is powered by an M4 chip for ultimate speed and efficiency. The 13-inch, 16 GB laptop comes in traditional silver and three other sky-inspired colors. The second-gen Apple Pencil has wireless charging and magnetically attaches to the side of the iPad. It was made for previous-generation iPad Air and iPad Pro models, along with the current iPad Mini, so make sure to check its compatibility with your tablet. The 11th-generation iPad largely mirrors the 10th-generation iPad from 2022, apart from its upgraded A16 chip and increased storage. It lacks Apple Intelligence, but it's the cheapest option in the brand's lineup and more than enough for most users. The new M3 iPad Air models include an upgraded processor and added video editing features over last year's models. Otherwise, they offer the same design and features as their predecessors in the same 11-inch and 13-inch form factors. The seventh-generation iPad Mini runs on Apple's powerful A17 Pro processor, which spun the wheels in the iPhone 15 Pro models. It's compatible with Apple Intelligence and supports the Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). The pint-sized Ninja Creami dupe from Dash has been going viral on TikTok lately as an affordable way to customize your own ice cream, gelato, and sorbet creations. Not only does it support the iconic K-Cup system, but also universal coffee filters that are sold separately for the climate conscious. Breville's Barista Express, the predecessor to the newest Barista Pro, is a 9.5-pound machine that quickly and reliably makes great-tasting espresso every time. Vertuo Pop is the smallest, most stylish Nespresso ever. You can brew five sizes of coffee — hot or with ice — without sacrificing precious counter space. Brew your coffee on the go with the Espro Travel Coffee Press, the travel mug with a French press built in. While we haven't tested this specific version of the Ninja Foodi air fryer, Ninja's dual basket version is one of the top picks in our buying guide, and the brand makes some of the most reliable small kitchen appliances around. The Zojirushi UMAMI Micom Rice Cooker & Warmer NL-GAC10 is a stylish cooker and a bit of a splurge, but you assuredly get what you pay for, especially if you primarily cook long-grain rice. A more compact yet still powerful KitchenAid mixer, the Classic has a smaller bowl and lower wattage than the brand's Artisan series. There are still three attachments, including a dough hook, that will help you get through all your holiday baking. It's a pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice and grain cooker, steamer, saute, sous vide, yogurt maker, sterilizer, and warmer all-in-one. Amazon's latest Kindle Paperwhite offers even faster performance than its predecessors in the same thin, waterproof form readers love. It's the e-reader we'd advise for most people as the flush screen design makes it feel more premium than the cheaper model, and the larger screen looks much nicer. The Kindle Scribe redesign features white borders for a more spacious writing surface, plus Active Canvas, a feature that lets you write notes directly on a book page. For most people, a tablet offers more utility for a comparable price, but this e-reader offers an undeniably smooth experience for notetaking. The Oura Ring is one of the most well-respected of the original smart ring brands and is a great buy whether you're an Android or iPhone user. This is a great option for fitness fans wanting to avoid the bulky smartwatches during exercise. We particularly like it for sleep tracking, too, as wearing a watch day and night is a bit much. The latest Google Pixel Watch offers robust fitness tracking benefits like Fitbit Morning Brief, advanced running features, and target cardio load. The bezel is still quite thick, but given most apps run on a black background, it's really not that noticeable, and the rounded glass design makes it one of the best-looking smartwatches money can buy. The Charge 6 by Fitbit has a more expansive feature set than the budget-friendly Inspire 3 for fitness, whether you're an amateur or enthusiast. While it's a pricier option, it's still amazing value for such a capable fitness tracker. Sony's WH-1000XM4 headphones offer an excellent balance between sound quality, noise-cancelling performance, and price. They're an older model but still deliver fantastic value, especially when they're on sale. The most affordable of the Amazon Echo lineup is designed to fit into small spaces without standing out. It's available in four different colors. The new Amazon Echo Spot features a brand-new display face and functions best as an alarm clock smart speaker. It offers rich sound and can control your smart home's other devices with the help of Alexa. Acer's Nitro 5 is a budget-friendly gaming laptop. This entry-level model features an older but still solid Intel Core i5 chip along with an RTX 4050 graphics card. The 15.6-inch screen has a 144Hz refresh rate, which is decent but not as high as pricier options. This Vivobook Go by Asus with a 15.6-inch FHD display is excellent value for a basic laptop for casual workloads. The 49-inch Odyssey G9 with dual-QHD resolution is a less expensive version of the larger Neo G9 super ultra-wide with dual-4K resolution. However, it retains HDR1000 certification, a 1000R certification, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, and a 240Hz refresh rate. The 2-Series uses Amazon's Fire TV interface for easy streaming access. With an HD screen rather than 4K panel, this display is meant for casual viewers who want a basic smart TV in a smaller size. This 43-inch Frame TV bundle includes the 2024 edition of the display and a teak bezel. Despite its smaller size, this set still uses a 4K QLED panel. The 50-inch Vizio MQX is a budget-friendly QLED built with gaming in mind. It has a higher refresh rate than most competing sets this size, which can offer smoother gameplay when paired with a PS5, Xbox Series X, or PC. The QN90D is one of Samsung's flagship QLED displays. It's one of the only 4K Mini LED TVs available in a 50-inch size. Mini LEDs help the TV achieve high brightness and contrast, with image quality that's a clear step above cheaper QLEDs. TCL's S5 LED display doesn't use quantum dots like the brand's pricier QLED TVs, but it's still capable of wide color support and it uses the Amazon Fire TV OS for easy integration with Alexa. The C5 is LG's midrange OLED TV for 2025. It delivers high contrast and deep black levels while offering a slightly brighter image than last year's C4 model. Roku's flagship Pro Series TV is a great all-around 4K QLED. Though similarly priced TCL and Hisense models have an edge in image quality, Roku's intuitive smart TV interface, handy backlit voice remote, and easy assembly make the Pro Series a worthy competitor. The S90D is our favorite TV overall. Its QD-OLED panel delivers a high-contrast image with vivid colors, wide viewing angles, and impressive brightness for this class. The Plus Series is Roku's entry-level QLED TV model. It has quantum dots and local dimming to offer good contrast, brightness, and color performance for the money. The display also uses our favorite smart TV system and comes with a convenient rechargeable remote. Samsung's high-end S95D uses a unique matte screen that can nearly eliminate glare and reflections. It's also the brightest OLED we've ever tested. However, the anti-glare design can give black levels a slightly faded look in bright rooms. TCL's Q65 is one of the most affordable 98-inch TVs on the market. It uses quantum dot tech to provide a wide range of colors, but its contrast ratio is lower than pricier QLED TVs. For a Dyson at the lowest price possible, you can't go wrong with the basic but mighty Dyson V8 Plus Cordless Vacuum. It offers two cleaning modes, three attachments, and a cleaning time of up to 40 minutes. The Shark Navigator Lift-Away Deluxe features a detachable pod for cleaning surfaces other than your floor; it also includes a HEPA filter for allergens and swivel steering for easy maneuverability. If you are looking for a budget-friendly workhorse and don't need high-end features, the Eufy BoostIQ RoboVac 11S Max is your best bet. Carpet and upholstery cleaners can often be large, bulky contraptions that clutter busy closet floor space. So, the portable Bissell Little Green cleaner is a great option for small spaces like apartments, tiny houses, and condos because it's small enough to fit in cupboards, on shelves, or potentially even under your sink. This Ring Battery Doorbell comes with live view, two-way talk, motion detection, and alerts to help keep your home safe. The no-frills Flexispot Standing Desk moves quickly, smoothly, and quietly to reach your desired height. It's an affordable option for people who need a basic standing desk. The Midea U Inverter Window Air Conditioner features a unique design that allows you to open the window when it's installed. While it was recently recalled, the units available for purchase have been repaired, and it remains one of our top AC picks. The Whynter ARC-14S Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner may be big and not as portable as other units, but it did the best job of cooling our 550-square-foot test room. LifeStraw's Personal Water Filter is a portable filter that cleanses water of bacteria and parasites to make it safe to drink. For backpackers and hikers, a LifeStraw can be an invaluable tool in dire situations and is a great addition to any emergency kit. The Bliss Electric Bidet Seat is a feature-filled bidet seat with enough add-ons to justify the luxury of owning one. The Jackery Explorer 300 Portable Power Station can power or charge six small devices at a time and recharges using a solar panel (not included), wall outlet, or car port. Right now, it's at an all-time low price when hitting the coupon box at Amazon. This is the lowest price we've seen in 30 days for these sunnies. If you are looking for a chic and lightweight pair of glasses these are it. However, some offers are one-day 'daily deals', while others will only last as long as the stock Deals, especially the really good ones, are usually only live for a few but most are.
