Passenger spots volcano erupting from plane window
Jon and Jo Meek, from Moretonhampstead, had been visiting Sicily for the European Masters Off Road Running Championship.
Mrs Meek - who was sleeping while her husband watched the plumes of smoke from his window - ran in the competition which took place the day before the eruption.
"I can't actually believe it because you fly out for one race and if the volcano had erupted and we couldn't race I would have been pretty gutted," she said.
"Literally the day before, I ran up to the cable car station and back down as part of the race and we thought absolutely nothing of the volcano."
The couple were separated on the plane and were both sat on opposite sides of the aircraft.
"I have to confess I was fast asleep on the airplane... but Jon however had a great view," said Mrs Meek.
Mr Meek said the experience was "exciting" but had the race been 24 hours later Mrs Meek would "have been in the thick of it".
"I was just lucky I was sat in a window seat and overlooking it as we flew off so it's an amazing sight," he said.
"I think it was just fascinating... it's exciting to watch.
"When we took off and I had the view over it I looked over and she was fast asleep so she slept through the whole thing," he added.

Or, worse, 'I need to get back to the lab.' Yet he had an immediate rapport with children, and he loved to make me laugh. Within a year, Jon parked his red VW convertible in front of my apartment and moved in. We decided to get married long before we knew each other well enough to make that choice. Besides, how likely was I to meet anyone who was more interesting? We've been married now for 59 years. Some periods were sweetly intimate, and some were difficult; in some we led quite separate lives, each with our own friends and our own activities. But what held us together like duct tape was our affection, respect, and stubbornness. A lot has been written and spoken and sung about the drama of young love, juiced by hormones and boundless energy. But ecstasy is hard to sustain, and most people are far more complicated than they seem in those first glorious hours or days or years. I've come to appreciate the familiarity and sturdiness of old love, whether in long marriages or deep-rooted friendships. The wounds — of course there were wounds — heal eventually, leaving barely noticeable scars. Advertisement Even now, Jon and I still surprise each other. I tended to be late when we were young, a habit that annoyed Jon, who was reliably punctual. These days, I'm always early. After decades of occasionally making mediocre chili and nothing more, Jon downloaded a recipe app and now does most of the cooking, all vegetarian for my sake. He started baking bread during the pandemic and never stopped. Jon decided we should have a celebratory dinner on the 50th anniversary of our meeting. He could not reconstruct the exact date, so he asked me. I brought forth the ticket stubs that had rested for almost half a century at the bottom of my jewelry box and announced, 'Thursday, July 1, 1965.' Jon has retold that story a dozen times. Maybe more. 'She saved the stubs,' he says with undisguised astonishment. 'Fifty years later, she knew right where they were.' I am grateful for the elderly version of our marriage. It feels more straightforward than most of the versions that preceded it. We are humbler now and more tender. We understand the implications of mortality. Many of our friends have lost their partners, and for many others, marriage now means caregiving or dependence. Knowing that health is fragile, knowing that time is limited, we acknowledge every morning the preciousness of our here and now: the rescue cats we dote on who sleep at the foot of our bed, the first cup of strong coffee. We walk around Jamaica Pond, often in time to see the sun rise over the water. We have biscuits in our pockets for the dogs who walk when we do. We notice the angled light or the diving ducks or the shy muskrats. Sometimes Jon and I hold hands. When we get home and he takes off his hat, his thin white hair stands on end.
