Gardaí receive ‘key information' about disappearance of Icelandic man Jon Jonsson six years ago

A team of five detectives travelled to Iceland on Monday and are due to come back to Ireland today. Garda detectives have interviewed 45 people this week in Iceland in relation to the disappearance of Jon Jonsson. The case has not yet been upgraded to homicide and suicide has not yet been ruled out. A team of five detectives travelled to Iceland on Monday and are due to come back to Ireland today. Sources said the gardaí received 'key information' and are keeping a 'very open mind' about the disappearance of the 41-year-old, who was in Ireland to attend the Dublin Poker Festival when he went missing six years ago. We need to analyse every single detail – the clue to this is in Iceland A large number of females were interviewed as part of the process along with some suspected criminals. 'We need to analyse every single detail in the 45 statements that have been obtained – the clue to this is in Iceland,' a source told the Sunday World. The father of four disappeared after leaving the Bonnington Hotel on the Swords Road in north Dublin on February 9, 2019. Jon Jonsson seen leaving the Bonnington Hotel. Photo: Paul Sheridan News in 90 Seconds - June 28th The investigation is being led by Detective Superintendent Alan Brady of Ballymun garda station who made a public appeal earlier this week for information in the case. 'We came here to interview a large number of people who we think may have some information in relation to where Jon is,' Det Supt Brady said. 'We've also come here to appeal to the Icelandic public for help in finding Jon. 'We believe that whatever happened to Jon did happen to him in Dublin, but the answers to what happened to Jon may lie here amongst the Icelandic community.' Speaking to Icelandic media, Det Supt Brady said gardaí were trying to do everything they can to progress the investigation. No family should have to endure what they've gone through 'Jon's family have been going through heartbreak for the last six-and-a-half years,' he said. 'We're here to try and find answers for them. No family should have to endure what they've gone through.' The investigation into Mr Jonsson's disappearance has been stepped up in recent months. His family believe he may have been murdered by a paid hitman in a case of mistaken identity. One line of investigation is if the hitman intended to target a different Icelandic man visiting Ireland at the time. Gardaí believe there are people who may have knowledge of Mr Jonsson's disappearance who are not comfortable speaking to Icelandic police. They hope they will be more willing to speak to Irish officers. The Irish Independent understands that all 45 interviews conducted by gardaí this week were facilitated by Icelandic police. In April, gardaí in Dublin carried out four new searches with cadaver dogs after people provided information after RTÉ aired a documentary podcast series on Mr Jonsson's disappearance. Mr Jonsson left the hotel on foot at about 11am and was recorded by a security camera 200m away. Beyond those images, no trace of him has ever been uncovered. Since Mr Jonsson disappeared, gardaí have followed more than 350 lines of enquiry.

Island wedding a picture-perfect reality

Katie and Jon met at 16 and tied the knot 25 years later. They flew 50 of their closest family and friends to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and put on a weekend-long wedding extravaganza. The local community came together for the very special occasion. Local celebrant Amy Rossbach conducted the ceremony, a local teacher played the aisle music, and Cocos Picnics make charcuterie cups. Locals also helped put the marquees up and were behind the bar. The icing on the Cocos cake? Bride Katie flew saxophonist Laura Wilkins up to surprise her husband with his dream tunes in the evening. The big day took place on March 15, 2025, at bride Katie's birthplace — the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Katie's gorgeous dress was a Stella York design from Tuscany Bridal, and Jon wore linen trousers from Robertson Sand and a linen shirt from MJ Bale. The newlyweds spent three weeks on Cocos following the wedding, and plan on a child-free trip to Bali in 2026. One of TV's best and 'most chilling' episodes ever aired 9 years ago today

Viewers have described this season finale as 'the best episode of anything ever' (Picture: HBO) There are two types of Game of Thrones fans. You either religiously watched each episode every week as it aired live on television, or you waited until everybody raved about how good it was and binged it one go, enjoying the luxury of being able to fast-forward through the ad breaks. As a member of the latter, it feels peculiar reading some of the negativity towards season 6 of the HBO series adapted from George R. R. Martin's novel series. A critic from the Guardian described the season as 'patchy' at times and claimed that 'the dialogue has certainly lacked the subtlety of earlier years'. Perhaps when you're not forced to wait an entire week for a new episode to air, the viewing experience becomes slightly different. But following the season six finale 'The Winds of Winter', the same critic described it as 'heart-stopping and spine-tingling'. Today, 9 years after it originally aired, I think both sets of Game of Thrones fans can agree on one thing – that it is one of the single greatest episodes of television ever. Jon Snow is named King of the North! Don't tell him it's short lived (Picture: HBO) Bran finally learns the true parentage of Jon in this scintillating episode (Picture: HBO) Set amidst the backdrop of the High Sparrow's growing religious movement in King's Landing, Cersei stands trial at the Great Sept of Baelor for incest, adultery, and the murder of King Robert. However, in a breathtaking opening sequence, we see Cersei destroy the Sept with wildfire, killing all of her enemies – including Margaery Tyrell, the High Sparrow and her uncle Kevan Lannister. Witnessing such destruction, Tommen Baratheon decides he cannot take it anymore and commits suicide. In the North, Jon Snow is declared King. Meanwhile, Bran Stark finally learns the true meaning of his visions and that Jon's true parents are Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen. Daenerys also manages to set sail for Westeros with Tyrion Lannister and her forces. And, if that wasn't enough to satisfy us, Arya Stark completes one of the most stunning revenge arcs in TV history as she kills the Frey family, who were responsible for the infamous Red Wedding. As Entertainment Weekly wrote at the time of its release – 'Boom. On every level, boom.' Boom indeed. Viewers have described series 6 episode 10 as one of the 'greatest season finale that has ever been on TV' (Picture: HBO) Daenerys sets sail for Westeros with Tyrion Lannister. This can only make me think about how disappointing that last season was (Picture: HBO) Written by series co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, and directed by Miguel Sapochnik, @RoarReximus described it as 'one of the best episodes in the history of television!' on X, while @inevitablejae said: 'This was drama at its peak.' Writing on imdB at the time of its release – where the show still to this day has a rating of 9.9 out of 10 – jwcalifo described it as the 'best episode of anything ever', writing: 'As long as you've been keeping track of this show since season 4 or 5, you will agree this is the best episode ever.' Hh-22896 also wrote: 'The best episode I have seen in my entire life Perfect writing, perfect direction, perfect acting. What an episode!!!!' Depressingly good television Our TV reporter Milo Pope shares his thoughts on what fans have described as the 'best episode of anything ever'… 'The Winds of Winter' has stuck in my mind for that incredible opening 25 minutes that sees the explosion of the Sept and Tommen Baratheon jump from a window of the Red Keep. Within a series that is packed with so many breathtaking moments, it's a compliment in itself that an opening to an episode can hold such weight in your mind. But after re-watching what can only be described as a TV masterclass, I had completely forgotten what happens in the following 45 minutes or so. To think that this was the same episode as when Arya finally reenacted revenge on the Freys or that Jon was made King (it still hurts to think about how badly his storyline ended, so for the sake of our sanity, let's pretend it never happened). But it's also the smaller details, like how a piano was used as the primary instrument for the show's score – which was unusual in comparison to the rest of the series – to create this sense of unease and impending doom. It's not just brilliant and life-affirming but also inspiring at the same time. It's also, sadly, a little depressing too. This is an episode of television from 2016 that we're still reminiscing about, and I can't think of the top of my head what series has made me feel close to this way since. Perhaps we, as an audience and the wider TV landscape as a whole, have become less willing and patient with shows to build a story arc in the first few seasons that can then, in turn, deliver such dramatic finales like this. Whatever era we're in, days like today, where we can celebrate a piece of TV history like this, feel like they're not going to come around as often in the future. Ethanvdub added: 'My favorite scene in all of television. The first 25 minutes of this episode was some of the best directed and written television I have ever scene. Absolutely chilling.' Thejokerdodig commented: 'The greatest season finale that has ever been on TV.' Jerianne-13906 also claimed: 'This was the best episode, if I dare say, of the entire show. From the piano/cello duet that is throughout, to every persons part of the story. So so good.' Jonathan Pryce as the High Sparrow in the Sept before it explodes (Picture: HBO) Earlier this month, it was the ten-year anniversary of another Game of Thrones' season finale, which critics claimed 'crossed a line'. But if you're still craving some Game of Thrones action, perhaps Amazon Prime's new dark comedy starring Maisie Williams, best known for playing Arya Stark in Game of Thrones, could be up your alley. In the six-part series, she plays 'strange young misfit' Kim, who was just a small child when her father died in mysterious circumstances. Soon after her mum, Kim – played by Fleabag's Sian Clifford – whisked her away to a remote rural life of seclusion and bizarre survival techniques. When the show was released, critics praised it as 'one of the best shows of the year' despite it largely going under the radar. 'One of 2020's best new shows, Two Weeks to Live leans into the witty humour of classic British comedies like Hot Fuzz and Brassic,' NME wrote in its review. Fans also said it was 'gripping', 'action packed with splashes of comedy', and an 'absolute gem of a show'. Game of Thrones is available to watch on Sky Atlantic. Got a story? ‘I spent years acting as UK celeb on cruises - people always mistake me for him'

Jon Fisher is a veteran lookalike who has spent the past 12 years performing on Marella Cruises. He loves his job and relishes the opportunity to travel the world A Gary Barlow lookalike who has spent more than a decade performing as a cruise tribute act to the star says he is frequently mistaken for the singer in public. Upon first glance, Jon Fisher is almost indistinguishable from the Take That favourite, but it's a look – and voice – that has been carefully honed over 12 years. With sandy blonde hair, a salt and pepper beard and similar facial features, the two performers could be siblings. ‌ They are also both 45, married and dads with three kids. The resemblance has served Jon well – landing him the spot as the ultimate Barlow act in the UK and working on Marella Cruises, TUI's ocean cruise line. ‌ His favourite hits to perform include 'Only Takes A Minute Girl' and 'Relight My Fire', as well as crowd-pleasers like 'Back For Good' and 'Greatest Day'. 'I get a lot of double takes and stares on the cruises. People will whisper as I walk by, thinking I'm Gary – especially if I have my sunglasses on or if I'm standing next to other famous people, like Craig Revel Horwood," he explained. 'Die-hard fans sometimes get a little bit confused when they meet me and want to take a picture together. While I appreciate the attention – because I love Gary too – I always come clean about my real identity. But I think it's great that people wonder if I'm really him, because it means I'm doing a good job. 'It's always a great atmosphere onboard the cruise – everybody gets up singing and dancing. The crowds love hearing the classic songs, and it gives them a home from home when they are onboard listening to music they know and love." ‌ Jon loves his job and the chance that he gets to travel. 'Being able to travel from port to port makes it feel like I'm performing in a new city every night," he said. "Not many people can say they have performed to hundreds of people in the middle of the sea. The audience is a massive part of the job and what makes it such a joy. Cruisers majorly enjoy tribute acts, and they especially love getting involved by singing along to waving back to me in the crowd. There are often fellas in the audience who have been dragged along to these shows by their wives, so I have a bit of fun with that.' Marella Cruises provide all-inclusive cruise holidays with full end-to-end service, including flights, cabins, entertainment, food and drinks, trips, and transfers. It also offers regional flying from over 20 airports and multiple cruise-and-stay options. ‌ Jon's full-time career – which involves embarking on 20 cruises a year – started 'by accident' after friends urged him to put his resemblance to the singer to good use. Jon said: 'I'd been singing for a long time and had worked on Marella Cruises doing productions and in different bands. 'I had a few mates who were doing tribute shows and they convinced me to give it a go. I had my first gig two weeks later – I haven't looked back since.' ‌ Jon's work takes him across the globe but the dad has never had the chance to meet Gary himself – yet. When he's not on the cruise, Jon – who is originally from Reading – lives in south Wales with his wife and kids. He tries to keep his work persona separate from his home life, but he sometimes slips into Barlow's Cheshire accent. He added: 'You find some tributes who carry the personality of their act around with them – but that's not me. When I'm working, I'm working – but when I'm not, I'm not being Gary. I am a fan and respect what he does but I'm not hugely obsessed, so I don't carry him into my personal life.'

BBC Breakfast's Carol Kirkwood apologises to co-star live on air in awkward blunder

The weather presenter made a blunder live on air. BBC Breakfast presenter Carol Kirkwood had to quickly issue an apology to her co-star during Wednesday's show. On the programme, BBC viewers tuning in saw the weather presenter detail the latest forecast, warning it will turn increasingly humid in the south throughout the day. ‌ Despite drizzly patches of rain throughout the UK, the 63-year-old star went on to say that overall, it'll be bright and sunny. ‌ As she wrapped up and began to hand back to Sally Nugent and Ben Thompson in the studio, Carol made a blunder, writes The Express. She said: "Jon and Sally, you were saying- Sorry, Ben and Sal." The BBC star seemed to get Ben Thompson's name confused with Jon Kay, who is usually co-hosting alongside Sally during the week. Addressing the mishap, Ben joked: "I answer to anything Carol, don't worry," She replied: "Oh Ben, I am so sorry! You're so lovely as well." Assuring her it was all ok, he added: "Don't be daft! It's just all these short names, that's what it is. It's nice to see you." ‌ Currently, Ben has been filling in for the regular presenter Jon after the seasoned broadcaster enjoyed a break away from the show. Taking to Instagram this week, Jon shared a snap of himself on the beach with the caption: "Long weekend back in the beautiful West Country." It wasn't long before people commented on the snap, with many hoping he enjoyed his time away from the red sofa. ‌ One person said: "You deserved it," while somebody else added: "Looks beautiful." Another follower commented: "Hope you had a wonderful weekend to decompress." One fan said: "That looks lovely. Missed you being with Sally this morning." ‌ It's not yet known when Jon will resume his presenting duties on the programme. This wasn't Carol's first time saying the name live on air as she did the same at the start to the year, she found herself apologising after a name slip-up. Carol mistakenly addressed her co-host Sarah as Sally. ‌ The confusion arose since Sally Nugent usually presents alongside Jon from Monday to Wednesday, but Sarah had stepped in during half term. "It's Thursday that we'll all be in that milder air, Jon and Sal," Carol remarked before catching her error. The BBC presenter was visibly stunned as she quickly corrected herself, exclaiming: "Sarah! Sorry." The on-air gaffe prompted laughter from her fellow presenters, but the broadcast took an unforeseen twist when the camera abruptly switched to another broadcaster at the BBC London Breakfast news desk. ‌ Caught off guard, the presenter glanced into the lens with a look of surprise while Jon and Sarah's voices continued in the backdrop. From off-screen, Sarah's voice was heard saying, "I didn't hear what she said! " and Jon chimed in with a hushed, "Shh, don't tell her, don't tell her." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
