Arteta backs Arsenal's handling of Partey departure

Arsenal did not offer the 32-year-old a new contract at the end of last season and days later he was charged by British police with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault between 2021 and 2022.
Partey is due to appear before magistrates in London on August 5.
In a statement released on July 4, the day Partey was arrested, Arsenal said: "The player's contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case."
Arteta was asked during Arsenal's pre-season tour of Singapore whether the allegations against Partey were the deciding factor in him being released.
The Spaniard said he was "100 percent" convinced that Arsenal had followed the correct procedure, adding: "The club was very clear in its statement. There are a lot of legal matters that are very complicated so I cannot comment on any of that."
Partey joined Arsenal for £45 million from Atletico Madrid in October 2020.
He appeared 35 times in the Premier League last season, scoring four goals, and 12 times in the Champions League.

At least six killed in explosion in northern Syria, officials say

At least six people were killed and dozens of others injured in an explosion in northern Syria's Idlib province, officials said on Thursday. There has been no official statement on the cause of the blast. The UK-based war monitor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, reported that the explosion took place in an ammunition depot. The Syrian Civil Defence volunteer organisation, also known as the White Helmets, confirmed at least six deaths from the blast, which took place in the town of Maarat Misrin north of the city of Idlib. "This is the death toll only of those recovered by Syrian Civil Defence teams, who continue to search for those trapped under the rubble," the White Helmets said in a statement. Syrian Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management Raed al-Saleh said in a post on the social media platform X that teams were transporting the wounded and dead despite "continued recurring explosions in the area, which are hampering response efforts." The state-run news agency, SANA, reported 140 injured, citing local health officials, but gave no further details. Syria is struggling to recover from a nearly 14-year civil war that ended with the ouster of former President Bashar al-Assad in a lightning rebel offensive in December. During the war, which killed nearly half a million people and displaced half the country's pre-war population of 23 million, Idlib was an opposition-held enclave. The country's current interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa formerly led Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an insurgent group based in Idlib that spearheaded the offensive that unseated al-Assad.

Injured Pant bats on as India move on to 321-6 in fourth Test

Pant had to retire hurt Wednesday on 37 when struck a painful blow on the foot attempting an audacious reverse-sweep off a Chris Woakes yorker. The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced Pant was ruled out of keeping wicket at Old Trafford. But they added Pant, who has been one of India's outstanding players during the five-match series, racking up 462 runs in seven innings so far, would bat "as per team requirements". And after Shardul Thakur fell for 41, with India 314-6, Pant slowly made his way down the dressing room steps and out into the middle. Pant's opening ball Thursday saw him prod tentatively at a wide delivery, from England captain Ben Stokes, with the left-hander clearly struggling to move. He was then comprehensively beaten by the next delivery. Runners are no longer allowed in international cricket and Pant added two runs in seven balls faced Thursday to be 39 not out when rain stopped play 10 minutes before lunch. India resumed on 264-4 after Stokes went against history by sending the tourists in to bat. No team winning the toss and bowling first has ever won a Test at Old Trafford. But India, 2-1 down in a five-match contest, needed to make some history of their own if they were to maintain their hopes of a series victory as they had yet to win any of their previous nine Tests at Old Trafford. And with play resuming in overcast, bowler-friendly conditions, India soon slumped to 266-5 as Jofra Archer struck with just his fifth ball of the day. Ravindra Jadeja, on a run of four successive fifties this series, had added just one to his overnight 19 when he was undone by a superb Archer ball that moved sharply to take the outside edge, with second slip Harry Brook holding a fine low catch to his right. Thakur, one of three changes to the India side, counter-attacked by smashing a short ball from Woakes through cover for a commanding four. But his useful innings of 41 ended when Stokes once again proved himself a partnership breaker, although he needed considerable help from a leaping Ben Duckett at gully after Thakur edged a booming drive.

From hospital bed to Euro hero -- Bonmati back to her decisive best for Spain

At the end of June the world's leading women's footballer was lying in hospital with viral meningitis and it looked like she might not be able to play for Spain at the tournament in Switzerland. Now she is preparing to lead her team into Sunday's final against England in Basel, in a rematch of the 2023 World Cup decider which Spain won, after converting the only goal of the last-four clash with Germany late in extra time. "When the ball went in I started running around like a crazy person. I didn't know where to go," a smiling Bonmati said as she spoke to media at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich after collecting the trophy for player of the match. "It is so special to score in games like these and if I can help the team to keep making history that is very special indeed." Barcelona midfielder Bonmati, who has won the Ballon d'Or in each of the last two years, was taken into hospital at the end of June after reporting feeling unwell. Tests confirmed that she was suffering from a bout of viral meningitis and Bonmati could only watch from bed as her teammates beat Japan in a friendly. Viral meningitis is less serious than the rarer bacterial variant, which can lead to death within 24 hours, but it still seemed like a long shot for her to recover in time for the Euros. Growing rivalry Yet she did recover, and appeared as a late substitute in Spain's opening game at the tournament, a 5-0 win over Portugal in Bern on July 3. The 27-year-old was back in the starting line-up for their final group match, a 3-1 victory over Italy, and retained her place for the quarter-final against the host nation before scoring the winner against Germany. "I don't believe in destiny, just in hard work and in my own mentality. I can only thank everyone who has supported me because it has not been easy," Bonmati admitted. "She didn't have an easy start to the Euros but she has managed to overcome her health problems and has worked hard to get fit again," remarked coach Montse Tome. Spain are now into their first ever senior women's European Championship final, two years after winning the World Cup for the first time. Bonmati was one of the stars of that superb team which defeated England in Sydney, and is now dreaming of another title. La Roja are the favourites, even if England are the defending continental champions, for the latest instalment in a growing rivalry between the nations. As well as the 2023 Women's World Cup final, Spain beat England in the final of the men's Euros last year in Berlin. In late May an Arsenal side featuring several members of Sarina Wiegman's current England squad defeated Barcelona in the final of the Women's Champions League. Seven of the players who started for Barcelona that day in Lisbon also started against Germany on Wednesday, among them goalkeeper Cata Coll who made several vital saves before Bonmati got the winner. "Cata played really well, with some big saves when we were suffering," Bonmati said of Coll, who missed all of Spain's three group games due to tonsilitis. "Neither of us had the start we wanted at this Euros due to illness but we are lucky to be here today.
