How outdoor athletes can stay safe in the sun
Dr. Asha Shajahan is a primary care physician at Corewell Health. She said that an SPF sunscreen of at 30 is recommended for kids.
'The reason we say 30 is because a 30 SPF gives about 97% protection against the sun,' she said. 'So anything SPF 30 is good. Make sure it's water resistant and you want to apply it about 15 to 30 minutes before heading out to any kind of activity or before you're in that kind of activity.'
What to look for when choosing a sunscreen
Shajahan also mentioned another important step that many athletes may forget during their hours outside: reapplying sunscreen every two hours.
'I think that's the part where people kind of forget,' she said. 'They might lather it on before the game, but then throughout the game they don't really do that.'
Shajahan mentioned UV glasses and lip balm as additional useful products athletes can use to protect themselves.
For coaches, keeping a tent that provides shade and giving kids breaks in between playing can make a huge difference.
'What we want our coaches to do is make sure they encourage frequent water breaks,' Shajahan said. 'Because hydration is key for skin healing and keeping our kids safe also from getting dehydrated.'
Shajahan pointed out several signs, such as extreme skin redness and changing moles for people to be aware of if their skin is damaged from excessive time in the sun. If a child comes home with sun burn and their skin isn't improving after using cold compresses or aloe vera, they should see a doctor, she said.
'Also, if your child has been out in the sun a lot and they have moles or changing moles that have a different kind of asymmetry to pattern,' she said. 'It's not perfectly round or it starts having different hues of brown inside the lesion, you might want to take them to your primary care doctor or to a dermatologist. To make sure it's not turning into a precancerous lesion.'
Wet weather could lead to surge in mosquitoes
Shajahan encourages people to enjoy themselves and to have fun in the sun, but to do so safely.
'Have a great summer. Stay out in the sun, but make sure you bring that sunscreen, wear a hat, sunglasses and stay protected,' she said.

Kansas nonprofits awarded grants to tackle hunger
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Dozens of nonprofit groups across Kansas will soon launch new efforts to fight hunger with help from the Kansas Health Foundation. The organization is awarding more than $423,000 in mini-grants—up to $5,000 per group—to support local projects aimed at reducing food insecurity. Donors sought for Newton employee facing leukemia
NEWTON, Kan. (KSNW) — The City of Newton is rallying support for longtime city engineer Mike Headings, who was recently diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of leukemia. Headings has worked for the city for more than 26 years. His best chance for recovery is a stem cell transplant, and the city is now working with the nonprofit NMDP to find a donor match. Kansas nonprofits awarded grants to tackle hunger A donor drive was held Thursday, and another is planned for Saturday, July 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Newton Rec Center, 415 N. Poplar. Donating is easier than many people think. 'It's very similar to donating plasma or platelets and a noninvasive, non-surgical donation process for the vast majority of donors,' said Erin McDaniel, communications director for the City of Newton. 'About 10% of donors would be asked to do a stem cell bone marrow transplant.' Registration takes only a few minutes and includes a painless cheek swab. Healthy adults between 18 and 40 are eligible. How to talk about grief, loss with children following deadly Central Texas floods
AUSTIN (KXAN) — In the aftermath of catastrophic floods in Central Texas over Independence Day weekend, some mental health professionals said they are inundated with requests from families seeking services and guidance. Megan Butler, a licensed professional counselor with Lucero, said she has received calls from her clients, but also from school districts and other organizations. With at least 30 children among the more than 100 people who have died, they are helping their kids navigate grief, loss and confusion that comes from losing a friend or classmate, or from hearing about this kind of disaster. Butler urged parents to begin any conversation with their kids by validating their feelings and then following up with care. 'We just always want to start by saying, 'Whatever you're feeling, it's okay.' Right? 'There's no bad feelings. It's okay if you're sad, if you're angry, if you're confused, if you're scared — whatever you feel is okay,'' she said. 'So you know your kid best, and you know what might help your kid feel more comfortable.' For example, 'connecting activities,' such as walking together, playing basketball, and swinging on a swing are 'just as important' as conversations, she said. When asked whether a parent should be proactive about bringing up the topic with their child, Butler said it depends on the child themselves — and whether or not they were directly impacted or lost someone they knew personally. 'If we don't know that they had a direct loss, wait for the child to bring it up. We don't need to remind them of traumatic issues. But if they're — if they're showing signs of maybe reenacting it or thinking about it? Absolutely, you can see what's on their mind.' With so much of the devastation in Kerr County affecting Camp Mystic kids and counselors, Butler said she and other professionals are working with several families who are struggling with the decision to send their kids to summer camp in the remaining weeks of summer. 'There's a lot of fear and anxiety — that's completely expected. So, what we do is create a cope-ahead plan. We say, 'If you're feeling this way at camp, what can you do at camp to try to feel better?' We might make a care-kit. We might connect with some of the camp counselors and let them know they've been impacted,' she said. Butler said she has spent a long time immersed in how to process grief — teaching a grief class at the University of Texas Austin School of Social Work. She emphasized the fact that grief and mourning is not linear. 'So, you can go through different stages. Just be prepared for the long term,' she said. 'Three months out, six months out, a year out — they may be processing things for the first time. So, just go at their own pace.' She urged parents to prepare for regression, as well as outbursts, tears, anger and panic attacks — and encouraged them to lean into whatever comforting routine works best to soothe their child. 'Sometimes that's physical touch, sometimes that's sharing a crunchy snack, sometimes that's just taking a walk outside,' she said, also noting how routines and small check-in's can be helpful. 'You know your child, and so we're really asking the parents and caregivers to pump up that TLC right now and be really consistent.' Butler explained the community is trying to get connected and organized in order to support Central Texas in the long-term, too.
