Antonio Gates' path to Canton is one of a kind

Reuters2 days ago
August 2 - It's hard to be the first of anything when it comes to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
But when tight end Antonio Gates was inducted on Saturday afternoon, he became the first Hall of Famer who didn't play college football.
Gates certainly took the odd route to football stardom, but he was immortalized along with wide receiver Sterling Sharpe, defensive end Jared Allen, and cornerback Eric Allen at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.
Gates, 45, first made a name of himself by being a star college basketball player at Kent State, helping the team reach the Elite Eight of the 2002 NCAA Tournament and putting up even bigger numbers the following season. But NBA franchises weren't too fond of 6-foot-4 power forwards.
Earlier in his college career, Gates was at Michigan State and hoping to play basketball for Tom Izzo and football for Nick Saban. But the latter coach wanted Gates to focus on football, which turned out to be a good deal for Kent State.
When his college hoops career ended, NFL teams were interested in Gates as a tight end, and he eventually signed as an undrafted free agent with the San Diego Chargers.
"Tim Brewster, at the time, was the tight ends coach for the San Diego Chargers," Gates said during his speech. "Tim Brewster saw something in me. He would come and watch me play basketball, but he was confident I'd be an All-Pro tight end in three years."
"Switching sports can be a life-changing experience," he continued. "The unexpected opportunities are often the most powerful ones, because they can completely redirect your life -- if you're ready to take advantage of the opportunity."
The switch certainly paid off for Gates as he earned the first of eight straight Pro Bowl selections in his second season when he caught 13 touchdown passes. He had 955 receptions for 11,841 yards and 116 touchdowns in 236 games in 16 seasons (2003-18) with the Chargers -- the first 14 played in San Diego and the last two in Los Angeles.
The 116 touchdown catches are the most by a tight end and rank seventh overall.
Sharpe, whose career was ended by a serious neck injury at age 29, is the second football playing brother of his own family to earn induction. Younger brother Shannon Sharpe, a stellar tight end, was inducted in 2011.
During his speech 14 years ago, Shannon Sharpe said he was only the second-best player in his family.
So naturally, Sterling Sharpe asked his brother to join him at the podium on Saturday.
"The last time I was here, you said you were the only pro football player in the Hall of Fame that could say this, that you were the second-best player in your own family," Sterling Sharpe said, before cracking up the crowd with the finishing comment. "Well, I agree with that statement."
Sterling Sharpe, now 60, entered the Hall in his 26th year of eligibility.
Sharpe was a force for the Green Bay Packers from 1988-94, topping 1,100 receiving yards five times. He caught 18 touchdown passes in his final season and had 65 in 112 regular-season games to go with 595 catches and 8,134 yards.
Jared Allen also took the hard route to the NFL.
He played at small-college program Idaho State and was a terror at that level, winning the Buck Buchanan Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2003. That helped prompt the Kansas City Chiefs to select Allen in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL Draft.
Allen, 43, was a pass-rushing force and had 10 or more sacks on eight occasions during 12 NFL seasons with the Chiefs (2004-07), Minnesota Vikings (2008-13), Chicago Bears (2014-15) and Carolina Panthers (2015).
He had a career-high 22 sacks in 2011 and finished his career with 136.
"My definition of fear is a healthy fear of failure," Allen said. "It motivates you to do whatever you can to succeed. It's about getting knocked down, learning why it happened and working towards making sure it doesn't happen again."
"The pursuit of greatness -- I had the NFL sack leaders taped up in my locker so I could see greatness every day I came in," he remarked. "Seeing that picture looking back at me meant that I never got complacent."
Eric Allen finally received the call in his 19th year of eligibility.
Allen, 59, played 14 NFL seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles (1988-94), New Orleans Saints (1995-97) and then-Oakland Raiders (1998-2001).
Allen had 54 interceptions, returning eight for touchdowns. He set a then-NFL record with four interception returns for touchdowns in 1993 for the Eagles and later had three for the Raiders in 2000.
The six-time Pro Bowler was often considered one of the best all-around defensive players in the entire NFL during his tenure with the Eagles.
"Thank you to the legend, Buddy Ryan, for drafting me in 1988," Allen said of the late defensive-minded Philadelphia coach. "It was an honor to wear those Kelly Greens and represent the City of Brotherly Love. Whether it was Buddy's Boys or Bud Carson's Gang Green, we did so much damage on the football field."

Man Utd transfer news LIVE: United ‘dealt MAJOR Sesko blow', Fernandes ‘rejects' Saudi offer, Hojlund's price tag set

Fans furious with Ugarte Man Utd fans have already grown frustrated with one of their star players - two weeks before the start of the season. Angry supporters have demanded that Manuel Ugarte is added to the club's "bomb squad" after a costly mistake in Sunday night's 2-2 pre-season draw with Everton. The Red Devils failed to win for the first time on their pre-season tour of the USA as they played out a feisty draw with the Toffees. And Ugarte made a sloppy error to gift Everton their first goal of the match when he was dispossessed deep in his own half. Ugarte, who could cost Man Utd as much as £50.7m with add-ons included, was trying to dribble away from the box and launch a counter-attack when he had his pocket picked by Vitaliy Mykolenko. The Ukrainian easily stuck a leg out to rob Ugarte of the ball and tip it towards teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye. Gueye then floated a delicious cross to the back post where Iliman Ndiaye tucked home an equaliser to punish Ugarte's mistake.

Manny Pacquiao, Teofimo Lopez: Who will Ryan Garcia fight next after shock loss to Rolly Romero?

Ryan Garcia was on the wrong end of one of boxing 's biggest upsets earlier this year when he was outpointed by Rolando 'Rolly' Romero' in New York. The charismatic American delivered a lacklustre performance after being knocked down in the second round and has since undergone hand surgery. But he has recently posted footage of himself back in training and is eyeing a return to the ring before the end of the year. Which begs the question: who will be in the opposite corner? Let's take a look at some of the names in the mix to take on Garcia next. Rolando Romero rematch Despite being away from the ring for over a year, Garcia was a big favourite to beat Romero when they faced each other in May. However, he simply never got going and was comfortably beaten on points. Romero has since been upgraded to full champion status by the WBA after Jaron Ennis vacated his title to move up to super-welterweight. Garcia has never held a world title but could change that if he takes the rematch with Romero and wins. Talks have reportedly been held over a second fight between the pair, yet Garcia has claimed his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, wants to give the Romero title shot to another of his Golden Boy fighters. 'After the Romero fight, they gave me the worst offer you can ever imagine,' Garcia recently told The Ring. 'It was a bulls*** offer. And then Oscar tried to take my rematch with Rolly and give it to Raul Curiel. 'I've been trying to get the Rolly rematch, and now you want to give it to another fighter?' With Garcia and De La Hoya seemingly at loggerheads, the Romero rematch is currently hanging in the balance. Manny Pacquiao Garcia has now stepped up to welterweight but is not the biggest name at 147lbs. That title goes to the recently-returned Manny Pacquiao. The Filipino icon stepped back between the ropes for the first time in four years to draw with Mario Barrios last month as he narrowly missed out on becoming a world champion at 46. Pacquiao impressed in his comeback fight but Garcia is convinced he would deliver a one-sided beating if he shared the ring with the eight-division world champion. He told The Ring: 'I've been interested in fighting the legendary Manny Pacquiao for a while now. It's something that you dream of. There have been talks in the past of us fighting, and then it fell through. 'There is a history there. I am always up for the challenge; I would be lying if I said I am not interested. If Manny wants to throw down, let's do it. 'I know that I would present a lot of problems for Pacquiao. I would dominate him. I would capitalise on his mistakes better than other guys. I would knock him out like Juan Manuel Marquez – all due respect to the legend Manny, though." Garcia is 20 years younger than Pacquiao and this could be a passing of the torch moment. It may also be a chance for Pacquiao to prove his greatness once more, while both men would be in line for a major payday. Do not be surprised if this fight gets made. Teofimo Lopez Garcia has been talking up the prospect of fighting Romero or Pacquiao, but his promoter seems to have other ideas. Oscar De La Hoya has named Teofimo Lopez as an alternative opponent, with the 140lb world champion potentially stepping up to welterweight in the near future. Asked whether he liked the idea of Garcia running it back with Romero, De La Hoya said: 'No, I actually don't, because the first fight was a dull fight. 'I believe there's other big fights we can make with the likes of Teofimo and other fighters.' Garcia and Lopez are two of the most outspoken fighters in boxing today and the trash talk in the build-up would be must-watch. They also have crowd-friendly styles when at their best, with Garcia arguably having the edge in power while Lopez can outbox anyone, making it an intriguing matchup. Devin Haney rematch Devin Haney already has his next fight scheduled as he is due to face Brian Norman Jr for the WBO welterweight title in November. But if Garcia wants more time off to recover from his hand injury, setting this rematch up for the early part of 2026 could be a realistic prospect. Should Haney beat Norman Jr, he would become a three-weight world champion and would be firmly back on track after losing to Garcia last year before the bout was subsequently ruled a no contest after Garcia failed a drugs test. There is bad blood between the pair after their epic first fight which saw Garcia knock Haney down three times. They looked set for a rematch later this year only for Garcia to lose to Romero, while Haney failed to impress during his shutout points win over Jose Ramirez on the same night. Right now, the return fight does not appear to be on the table. But a Haney victory in November could change all that, with interest likely to ramp up for the arch-rivals to settle their feud once and for all. Oleksandr Usyk's ex-promoter delivers a damning verdict on potential Jake Paul fight

Oleksandr Usyk 's business partner and former promoter, Alex Krassyuk, has condemned a potential fight between the Ukrainian great and Jake Paul. Krassyuk said that in this new world of crossover boxing, a fight with Paul is something that gets seriously discussed, but he appealed for it not to be in a boxing ring. Krassyuk told World Boxing News : 'This fight is widely discussed now, but it can't be a boxing match as it is a homicide." Paul has become an unlikely name in boxing, transitioning from a young YouTube star to a professional boxer, ranked in the top 15 of the WBA cruiserweight rankings. He is coming off the two highest-profile wins of his career against a 58-year-old Mike Tyson and the former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Despite his progress, Krassyuk said that even if the fight were under MMA rules, Paul would stand an equally small chance of survival, but sees the financial gain from the fight as attractive enough for the undisputed heavyweight champion to consider. He said: 'Even a cage fight does not leave chances for the young YouTuber. But money talks. And this event can generate some serious numbers.' Usyk's future has been uncertain since he made history and became a three-time undisputed champion , knocking out Daniel Dubois at Wembley on July 19 . The WBO have ordered negotiations between him and the interim champion, Joseph Parker, but Usyk has nothing left to prove, and Krassyuk said he will encourage his friend to retire. Krassyuk concluded: 'I don't see him fighting anymore, at least in boxing. He has proved it all, there's nothing more to gain. 'For sure, there're going to be some dossers around pushing him to the ring again. 'As a friend, I will do my best to convince him to retire.'
