'Doesn't behove state authority': MEA rebukes Punjab CM Mann over PM Modi statement; calls remarks 'irresponsible'
' Without directly naming Mann, the MEA disassociated the central government from the statements, which it said undermined India's ties with friendly nations from the Global South.
'We have seen some comments made by a high state authority about India's relations with friendly countries from the Global South. These remarks are irresponsible and regrettable and do not behove the state authority,' said MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
'Government of India disassociates itself from such unwarranted comments that undermine India's ties with friendly countries,' he added.
The response came shortly after Mann made a series of sarcastic remarks to the media, questioning the relevance of the Prime Minister's visit to countries such as Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil and Namibia. Taking a swipe at the destinations, Mann joked that Modi may as well have been visiting places called 'Magnesia,' 'Galveaisa,' or 'Tarvesia.'

Sadanandan, 61, a retired teacher from Parinchery in Kannur, had lost his legs at the age of 30 in an attack by CPM cadres in 1994 when he was RSS Kannur sarkaryavahak. Sadanandan continued to be active in RSS and BJP, walking using prosthetic legs. He contested as a BJP candidate from Koothuparamba assembly constituency in 2016 and 2021. In his congratulatory message shared on X, PM Narendra Modi said Sadanandan's life was the epitome of courage and refusal to bow to injustice. "Violence and intimidation couldn't deter his spirit towards national development. His efforts as a teacher and social worker are also commendable," he said. Sadanandan expressed happiness over the nomination and said that Modi gave a hint in a telephonic conversation on Friday. CM writes to PM to save Nimisha Priya from death row
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene with Yemeni authorities and save Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, who has been sentenced to be executed in Yemen. In a letter to Mr. Modi on Sunday, Mr. Vijayan appealed to him to take up the matter and intervene with the authorities concerned to save the life of Nimisha Priya, 'considering the fact that this is a case deserving sympathy'. In the letter, he also attached a letter he had written to the Union Minister for External Affairs on March 24, 2025. In the March letter, Mr. Vijayan had written that the aged mother of Nimisha Priya had been making fervent appeals to save the life of her daughter. In an earlier letter dated February 6, 2025, he had requested intervention from Union Government for saving the life of the young woman, who has been found guilty for a crime committed by her as a teenager. Nimisha Priya, who hails from Kollengode in Palakkad district of Kerala, was convicted in 2020 for the murder of her Yemeni business partner in July 2017. She was allegedly subjected to severe abuse, and in an attempt to defend herself, the man had died. Nimisha Priya now faces the death penalty. As per Yemeni law, clemency is possible only through blood money. Her execution has been reportedly fixed for July 16.
