TMC MP Saket Gokhale pulled up for filing flawed affidavit in defamation appeal

NEW DELHI: The Delhi HC on Tuesday criticised Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale for filing a flawed affidavit in his appeal against a defamation order directing him to pay Rs 50 lakh to former diplomat Lakshmi Puri.
A bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Renu Bhatnagar objected to the affidavit for reproducing alleged oral court observations. 'This is not done… you first withdraw the affidavit,' the court said, asking Gokhale to file a revised one. The matter is next listed for July 22.
Senior Advocate Amit Sibal, representing Gokhale, admitted the mistake and apologised: 'This should not have happened. No oral remarks should be in affidavits.'
Last year, the court held that Gokhale's tweets accusing Puri of owning Swiss property disproportionate to her income were 'false and untrue.' The tweets were deemed politically motivated and aimed at targeting her husband, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
The court noted social media posts can trigger a 'chain reaction' akin to a 'nuclear reaction gone out of control.' Gokhale was ordered to pay damages and apologise in The Times of India and on X.

ISMA urges Govt to continue with curbs on ethanol imports

New Delhi: The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has urged the government to continue with the restrictions on ethanol imports as the measure has spurred India's petrol blending programme in the drive to green energy and also enabled timely payments to sugarcane farmers. ISMA has, in a letter to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, referred to media reports suggesting the possible consideration of lifting restrictions on ethanol imports for fuel blending, as part of ongoing trade discussions with the US. The latter states that over the last few years, the Government's clear and forward-looking policy direction-anchored in the National Policy on Biofuels which led to placing ethanol imports for fuel under the 'restricted' category, has laid a solid foundation for a self-reliant, domestic ethanol economy. The interest subvention schemes and facilitative regulatory ecosystem have catalysed the establishment and expansion of indigenous ethanol capacities across India, the letter points out. These landmark interventions have achieved multiple national objectives of ensuring timely payments and enhanced incomes for sugarcane farmers, reducing India's dependence on imported crude oil and promoting clean and sustainable biofuels, the letter states. It highlights that the coordinated effort has led to India's ethanol production capacity growing by over 140 per cent since 2018, with investments exceeding Rs 40,000 crore. Ethanol blending has already reached 18.86 per cent and is firmly on track to meet the 20 per cent blending objective ahead of target. This remarkable progress has been made possible due to the Prime Minister's visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the welfare of India's farmers. This has had a direct and measurable impact on farmers' welfare. By allowing the diversion of sugarcane and surplus grains into ethanol production at administered prices, the government has enabled timely cane payments and improved farm-level incomes across the country, the letter added. The latter states that opening up ethanol imports for blending would pose challenges to the sugar industry as it would affect profitability and may lead to underutilisation of Indian ethanol plants, many of which are still in the early stages of capital recovery.

Rahul Fazilpuria shot at in Gurgaon: CCTV footage shows car following his SUV before incident

CCTV footage emerged early Tuesday morning of a Tata Punch car allegedly following Haryanvi singer-rapper Rahul Fazilpuria's SUV Monday evening before he was allegedly shot at. The Gurgaon police Tuesday filed an FIR for attempted murder against unknown people at the Badshahpur police station and formed a team to nab the accused. They recovered the Tata Punch car, which was suspected to be following Fazilpuria's SUV, and recovered an empty bullet shell from the crime spot in Gurgaon's Sector 71. 'The accused have also been spotted (on CCTV). We hope to (identify them) nab them soon,' a police spokesperson said. The CCTV footage was from 5.58 pm, some time before unknown assailants in a car allegedly fired at Fazilpuria, 35, ( ) when he was standing near his SUV at the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) section near Badshahpur in Gurgaon's Sector 71. Fazilpuria, in his complaint to the police, said he got into his vehicle and escaped unhurt as the assailants could not chase him due to the traffic. Fazilpuria, known for promoting Haryanvi folk music, has several hits to his name. He gained fame in 2014 with his rap song 'Ladki Kar Gayi Chull,' which was also featured in the Bollywood movie Kapoor and Sons, starring Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra, and Fawad Khan. He unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha election in 2024 from Gurgaon as a Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) candidate against the Congress's Raj Babbar and the BJP's Rao Inderjit Singh, who was elected. Last year, the Gurgaon police arrested him and YouTuber Elvish Yadav for allegedly using rare species of snakes and a .32 calibre pistol in a music video. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) also questioned the two regarding allegations of money laundering and involvement in rave parties. The agency confiscated movable and immovable assets worth over Rs 58 lakh, which were allegedly linked to them, under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). This action was part of an investigation related to a similar snake venom case registered by the Noida police.

"65 days, 22 times..." says Jairam Ramesh as Trump again claims credit for India-Pakistan cessation of hostilities

New Delhi [India], July 15 (ANI): Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday pointed that US President Donald Trump has claimed credit for ending India-Pakistan conflict for a total of 22 times in 65 days. '65 days. 22 times. The same claim. It keeps getting repeated.' Jairam Ramesh wrote in a post on X. Jairam Ramesh has continuously criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not openly refuting Donald Trump's repeated claims of stopping the recent India-Pakistan conflict. Ramesh remarks comes as Trump on Monday again claimed for same during his meeting with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte. 'We have been very successful in settling wars, India, Pakistan... India, by the way, Pakistan would have been a nuclear war within another week, the way that was going. It was going very badly,' Trump stated. He pointed to his strategy of using trade as leverage, stating, 'We did that through trade. I said, we are not going to talk to you about trade, unless you get this thing settled, and they did.' On July 8 when Donald Trump had made the same claim during an interaction with reporters, Jairam Ramesh slammed PM Modi for not countering him 'President Trump has trumpeted all this just as he was also announcing that a US trade deal with India and Pakistan was about to be declared very soon. When will Narendra Modi, once described by his senior colleague Ghanshyam Tiwari as the BJP's 'trump card', break his silence on this issue?' he said. India has refuted the claims made by the US President, reiterating its policy that India and Pakistan bilaterally address any matter related to the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. 'As you are aware, we have a long-standing national position that any issues pertaining to the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir have to be addressed by India and Pakistan bilaterally. That stated policy has not changed. As you are aware, the outstanding matter is the vacation of illegally occupied Indian Territory by Pakistan,' the Ministry of External Affairs stated. The MEA further stated that the 'issue of trade' did not come up between Indian and US leaders since the commencement of 'Operation Sindoor' and the cessation of hostilities. India launched Operation Sindoor early on May 7 and hit terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoJK in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians were killed. India repelled subsequent Pakistani military aggression and pounded its airbases. India and Pakistan agreed to a cessation of hostilities following a call made by Pakistan's DGMO to his Indian counterpart. (ANI)
