PM Modi makes historic visit to Trinidad & Tobago, receives Guard of Honour
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Trinidad and Tobago late on Friday for the second leg of the five-nation visit. He flew down to the Caribbean nation from Ghana and is expected to hold meetings with the top leadership of Trinidad and Tobago to further strengthen the bilateral relationship.
PM Modi's counterpart, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, came to the Piarco International Airport to receive him. She was accompanied by the entire Cabinet of Trinidad and Tobago at the airport, where PM Modi was accorded the Guard of Honour. Interestingly, Persad-Bissessar wore Indian attire to welcome PM Modi.

Upon his arrival at the hotel, the Indian community welcomed him with chants of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Modi, Modi.' An orchestra performed, followed by a group singing bhajans.

In Port of Spain, the prime minister witnessed a Bhojpuri Chautaal performance. 'The connect between Trinidad & Tobago and India, especially parts of eastern UP and Bihar is noteworthy,' he said.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi will hold talks with President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar and discuss further strengthening of the bilateral relationship.

He is also expected to address a Joint Session of the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago. His visit will impart fresh impetus to the deep-rooted and historical ties between the two countries.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain alert for the state until July 7, as monsoon showers continue to lash several regions. Officials from the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority and the Revenue Department said the state has recorded losses exceeding ₹400 crore due to relentless rainfall.
