House Democrat says Ireland trip with Biden reminded him of father who suffered from Parkinson's
"We just had this moment where he met the president of Ireland and the whole tour was going extremely well, and the president was in great, great spirits," Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Ill., told CNN's Jake Tapper of his trip to the Emerald Isle in April 2023.
"And it reminded me, this is my father who was suffering from Parkinson's later in life, we'd have a family reunion and he'd be all charged up. And, you know, he had that energy and you could hear his voice. And then when it was over, the air came out of the balloon."
On Sunday, the former president's prostate cancer diagnosis was announced, with his spokesperson telling Fox News that the last time he received a blood test that screens for prostate cancer was in 2014.
"Right after all of these events, when you saw the president, it was unfortunately, the air going out of the balloon," Quigley said. "It was a whole different person. You could hardly hear him speak. He was, you know, breathy… and very frail."
Quigley was one of over 200 interviews conducted for Tapper's new book, "Original Sin," co-authored with Axios journalist Alex Thompson.
The book looks in part at the efforts made by top Biden aides and allies to hide the truth about Biden's mental and physical health, providing a depiction of a president who was routinely addled during his term.
Quigley said that he told his former colleague, Brian Higgins, a Democrat from New York, that they also saw similarities between Higgins' father and Biden.
"His father passed from a neurodegenerative disease," Quigley said. "We actually felt the same thing in watching what the president was going through… This was a tragedy that we saw not just with our family but with the president that we liked and respected. It's hard to watch."

It sells both testing products and a cryopreservation service without a doctor's prescription at its website. 'Male reproductive health should not be reactive or inaccessible,' Fellow CEO Brian Hogan said in the statement. 'We are on track to deliver over 40% year-over-year revenue growth, with a path to profitability in our fertility segment by 2026. This investment allows us to scale that vision and support both patients and providers with modern tools that work.'However, Fellow Health faces stiff competition in the male fertility space that could impact this optimistic revenue outlook. Rival Posterity Health booked $13 million in Series A funding earlier this year. The company partnered with Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company in 2023 to provide access to treatments for infertility, sexual dysfunction and low testosterone. A year earlier, American telehealth provider Ro bought Dadi, another male fertility and sperm testing startup. Its reproduction preservation service for men looks like a direct competitor to Fellow Health's family of products. Ro has also made a splash in women's health, acquiring Modern Fertility in 2021. Marjorie Taylor Greene asks Trump to commute George Santos' prison sentence
Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene wants President Donald Trump to commute the prison sentence of her disgraced former colleague George Santos, who's been locked up less than two weeks. Santos was sentenced to 87 months in prison for committing wire fraud and aggravated identity theft in April. He checked into New Jersey's Federal Correctional Fairton, located about 140 miles from Manhattan, on July 25. In her petition to the Office of the U.S. Pardon Attorney, Greene asks for Trump to consider setting the former representative from Queens free sooner than later. 'As a Member of Congress, I worked with Mr. Santos on many issues and can attest to his willingness and dedication to serve the people of New York who elected him to office,' Greene wrote. She conceded that Santos should be punished for his crimes, but believes his 7-year sentence is too severe. 'While his crimes warrant punishment, many of my colleagues who I've serve with have committed far worse offenses than Mr. Santos yet have faced zero criminal charges,' she claimed without offering examples. After lying about nearly all of his academic and professional qualifications to get elected to Congress in 2022, Santos was charged with crimes including a scheme to steal financial information from campaign contributors, then repeatedly charging those accounts without permission. He was expelled from the House of Representatives in December 2023. Greene wrote in her letter that commuting Santos' sentence would be an acknowledgement by the President that Santos had committed crimes, while also allowing him the opportunity to serve his community as a free man. Greene didn't specify when she believes Santos should be released. She concluded her request by using a term often used by the President in social media posts. 'Thank you for your attention to this matter,' Greene wrote. Santos complained in the days leading to his imprisonment that his pardon requests were not getting the President's attention. Trump has used his clemency power to excuse more than 1,500 criminals convicted on the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and has not ruled out pardoning high-profile sex offender Ghislaine Maxwell, but he hasn't showed an interest in working with Santos. Santos surrendered to prison authorities after bidding a dramatic adieu to supporters. 'Well, darlings… The curtain falls, the spotlight dims, and the rhinestones are packed,' he wrote on X before going to prison.
