Few thought airstrikes could end Iran's nuke program. Did they?
Iran itself has acknowledged the impact of the U.S. and Israeli attacks. But in the years since Washington's withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran, experts and analysts have emphasized that airstrikes alone would merely delay Iran's nuclear ambitions rather than permanently derail them. Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Illinois, reiterated that long-held understanding in a June 26 interview. "The targets are hard targets, deep targets, mobile targets. So it was never meant to eliminate the program," Quigley told USA TODAY. "It was never meant to do anything but slow the program." The congressman, who is on the House's intelligence committee and has regularly received briefings on Iran, added, "We've always been told . . . the only way to end this (nuclear) program is with a lot of troops on the ground for a long time. A war." The former head of the National Nuclear Security Agency's nonproliferation programs, Corey Hinderstein, struck a similar tone. "The conventional wisdom that you can't destroy the Iranian (nuclear) program through air attack alone has actually held," said Hinderstein, now a vice president at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. "While some are saying that the airstrikes were tactically and strategically successful, I think that the jury is still out on that, and we don't actually have the information that we need to believe that this program is gone." Third nuclear site, hidden centrifuges, missing uranium Iran may have another nuclear site that, if equipped with enrichment centrifuges and conversion equipment, could continue the process of preparing uranium for use in a nuclear bomb, if the regime wishes to pursue one. Shortly before Israel began its air campaign against Iran, the regime told the International Atomic Energy Agency that it had a third nuclear enrichment site but did not reveal details. Analysts believe an undisclosed underground facility at Pickaxe Mountain near the Natanz nuclear plant may be even deeper under the surface than the Fordow enrichment plant that was severely damaged in the U.S. strikes. The Pickaxe Mountain facility was first publicly revealed in 2023 by experts who spoke with the Associated Press. And it's unclear how much of Tehran's approximately 880 pounds of highly enriched uranium was destroyed or buried during the strikes -- satellite images show cargo trucks parked outside the Fordow enrichment plant in the days before the U.S. attack. U.S. lawmakers briefed June 26 and June 27 on intelligence assessments of the strikes acknowledged the missing uranium and called for a full accounting of the material, according to CNN. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, told the news agency that the question of the uranium's whereabouts underscores the importance of Iran negotiating "directly with us, so the (IAEA) can account for every ounce of enriched uranium that's there." More: Where is Iran's enriched uranium? Questions loom after Trump claims victory. But whether Iran wants to negotiate is another question. Despite the country's obligations as a member of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, Iran's Guardian Council approved a law June 25 halting the country's cooperation with the IAEA and its inspections of Tehran's nuclear sites "until the safety and security of our nuclear activities can be guaranteed," the country's foreign minister said on social media. House Democrat says Ireland trip with Biden reminded him of father who suffered from Parkinson's
A Democratic congressman said on Wednesday that a trip he took with former President Joe Biden during his term reminded him of his own ailing father. "We just had this moment where he met the president of Ireland and the whole tour was going extremely well, and the president was in great, great spirits," Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Ill., told CNN's Jake Tapper of his trip to the Emerald Isle in April 2023. "And it reminded me, this is my father who was suffering from Parkinson's later in life, we'd have a family reunion and he'd be all charged up. And, you know, he had that energy and you could hear his voice. And then when it was over, the air came out of the balloon." On Sunday, the former president's prostate cancer diagnosis was announced, with his spokesperson telling Fox News that the last time he received a blood test that screens for prostate cancer was in 2014. "Right after all of these events, when you saw the president, it was unfortunately, the air going out of the balloon," Quigley said. "It was a whole different person. You could hardly hear him speak. He was, you know, breathy… and very frail." Quigley was one of over 200 interviews conducted for Tapper's new book, "Original Sin," co-authored with Axios journalist Alex Thompson. The book looks in part at the efforts made by top Biden aides and allies to hide the truth about Biden's mental and physical health, providing a depiction of a president who was routinely addled during his term. Quigley said that he told his former colleague, Brian Higgins, a Democrat from New York, that they also saw similarities between Higgins' father and Biden. "His father passed from a neurodegenerative disease," Quigley said. "We actually felt the same thing in watching what the president was going through… This was a tragedy that we saw not just with our family but with the president that we liked and respected. It's hard to watch."

‘You promised you'd take a nap': Inside Hunter Biden's confrontation with Joe after watching dad flail during Ireland trip
Hunter Biden pressed his father, then-President Joe Biden, to rest during a trip to Ireland in April 2023. As the president was welcomed to his ancestral homeland, he set off on a busy schedule, including a tree-planting ceremony, the ringing of the Peace Bell, and an honor guard presenting arms, Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson write in Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again. The room Biden was in at one point during the trip grew empty, with fewer than a dozen people left. Two of them were Illinois Rep. Mike Quigley and then- New York Rep. Brian Higgins. Hunter Biden pushed his father to take a step back. 'You promised you wouldn't do this,' he said, according to the authors. 'You promised you'd take a nap. You know you can't handle all this.' Biden disregarded his son's concerns and walked to the bar in the back of the room, where a woman handed him a soft drink. He appeared exhausted. It was at that point that Quigley realized why the moment felt familiar. It reminded him of his father in his last few years before his death from Parkinson's at the age of 92. Biden and some Democrats alongside him reject that his deterioration occurred. Earlier this month, Biden appeared on The View, where co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin asked Biden about the 'Democratic sources' who had said that 'in your final year, there was a dramatic decline in your cognitive abilities. What is your response to these allegations, and are these sources wrong?' 'They are wrong. There's nothing to sustain that,' he responded. Although it wasn't yet announced, Quigley questioned during the trip to Ireland how Biden could run for re-election. While Biden got a boost from the crowds in Ireland, when they weren't present, he grew deflated, the authors write. Quigley believed at that moment that Biden needed to rest for the rest of the day and night. He was physically frail and had lost most of his energy. The authors describe his speech behind the scenes as breathless, soft, and weak. Quigley was frequently reminded of his dad during the trip. The Illinois congressman spoke to Higgins about Biden appearing to have symptoms akin to Parkinson's. However, Higgins viewed the president through a different lens, having lost his own father to Alzheimer 's and believing that he was seeing something similar in Biden's shuffling. 'A diagnosis is nothing more than pattern recognition,' Higgins told Tapper and Thompson. 'When people see that stuff, it conjures up a view that there's something going on neurologically.' He added that Biden's cognitive decline 'was evident to most people that watched him.' Quigley wondered why the White House physician didn't attempt to diagnose the president. However, he reasoned that Biden's staff may not have wanted to know. The president's staff was elated at his 2024 State of the Union performance. Biden was surrounded by Democrats on the floor of the House following the speech. Quigley hadn't been that close to Biden since the Ireland trip the previous year. When he put his hand on Biden's back, he could feel his ribs and spine. His voice soft and breathy, Biden's eyes darted from side to side. Once again, Quigley was reminded of his late father. Biden's disastrous debate performance a few months later didn't come as a huge shock to Quigley, the book reports. 'We have to be honest with ourselves that it wasn't just a horrible night,' Quigley told CNN's Kasie Hunt on July 2. A few days later, he became one of the first Democrats to call for the president to step back from the ticket.
