Plea for billionaire's son suspected of murdering woman in 2008 to return to UK
Martine Vik Magnussen, 23, was raped and murdered after a night out with friends to celebrate her end-of-term exams at the Maddox nightclub, Mayfair, central London, on March 14 2008.
Farouk Abdulhak was identified as the main suspect but hours after her death he fled the country to Yemen via Egypt.
The Metropolitan Police have appealed for Abdulhak to return to face charges and issued a more recent image of him.
Ms Magnussen's father said in a statement published by the force on Friday: 'For 17 years, justice has been denied as Farouk Abdulhak remains a free man in Yemen.'
Odd Petter Magnussen added: 'On March 8, International Women's Day, I was once again painfully reminded that my daughter, Martine Vik Magnussen was brutally raped and murdered in London in 2008.
'Violence against women and girls is a crisis that affects families worldwide and Martine's case is a stark reminder that justice delayed is justice denied.
'Martine's voice was silenced but we must not be silent for her.'
Her body was found in the basement of a property on Great Portland Street, central London, on March 16 2008 and a post-mortem examination found she had died from compression to her neck.
Abdulhak was friends with Ms Magnussen and had been at the nightclub on March 14.
In 2023 he claimed the incident was a 'sex accident gone wrong'.
In a text message to Nawal Al-Maghafi, BBC News Arabic special correspondent, Abdulhak said he 'could barely piece together what happened'.
When the journalist asked him why, he replied: 'Cocaine.'
Abdulhak told Ms Al-Maghafi 'trust me I'm legally (expletive)' and that this was due to 'leaving the country and the body was moved'.
She asked him if he had thought about handing himself in, and he said lawyers had advised him not to as he would now 'serve the harshest sentence'.
Abdulhak told her it was 'too late'.
His father was the late billionaire Shaher Abdulhak, who was known as the king of sugar because the source of part of his fortune was the soft drinks industry.
An anonymous family member told a Discovery+ documentary aired in 2022 that Abdulhak is leading an isolated life in Yemen.
They said: 'Farouk's entire life is staying at home. There is no socialising. There is no going to public places.
'Nobody comes there. He doesn't really have any friends.'
Ms Magnussen was studying at Regent's Business School and had just come top of her class when she died.
A group of students were on the night out but Ms Magnussen vanished, and her body was found in the basement area of flats where Abdulhak lived.
On Friday, Detective Inspector Jim Barry, leading the investigation from the Met's Specialist Crime Command, said: 'Despite Abdulhak's refusal to come to the UK, we are as committed today as we were in 2008 to get justice for Martine.
'We're releasing a more up-to-date image of Farouk Abdulhak and hope that someone can encourage him to do the right thing and hand himself in to UK police.
'My message is directly to Farouk Abdulhak.
'You have been running and hiding for 17 years. You participated in a BBC documentary, providing your explanation as to what happened. It is time to grow up and face your responsibilities to Martine and her family.
'Come to the UK now and explain all to a court and jury. Our pursuit of you will not stop.'

Members of the public have been left "traumatised" after mistakenly offering to help drive a double murderer over a bridge where he planned to dump the victims' bodies, police have revealed. Warning: This article contains graphic descriptions of murders. Yostin Andres Mosquera was convicted on Monday of the , who were killed in west London on 8 July 2024. After decapitating their bodies, the heads were stored in a freezer, while the other remains were put in suitcases. On 10 July, Mosquera hired a van with a driver to transport him and the bags to Clifton Suspension Bridge. Detective Chief Inspector Ollie Stride, from the Metropolitan Police, said people who had been watching a football match in a nearby pub, came outside and tried to help Mosquera, by offering to drive him over the bridge as they saw he was struggling with the heavy suitcases. "He told them he wanted to go to the other side of the bridge, which was only 150 yards from where he stood, but he couldn't see it," Detective Inspector Neil Meade, from Avon and Somerset Police, said. "They tried loading the suitcases into the back of their car and one of them commented: 'God, these are heavy, is there a body in there?'" DCI Stride said they "simply couldn't lift them into the cars so... they helped him order the taxi, that took him over using Google Translate because they couldn't communicate with him, [as] he spoke in Spanish". He added: "They've been really traumatised by the whole thing, obviously now understanding what had happened afterwards." The prosecution argued Mosquera went to Bristol with the intention of throwing the bags off the bridge. But Mosquera caught the attention of passers-by, telling them the cases contained car parts. However, people noticed liquid leaking from the bags - which was blood. A cyclist challenged Mosquera about the suitcases and chased after the double killer as he fled down a hill - filming him on his phone. Det Insp Meade praised the cyclist and said the image he took of Mosquera was "critical" for the investigation. "It gave us a lead to start with," he said. "It was an unbelievable piece of work by that member of the public. It was incredibly brave for the cyclist to intervene and have the presence of mind to get that footage on his phone." Police officers then attended the bridge and had to open the suitcases, which contained the torsos and limbs of Mr Alfonso and Mr Longworth. Det Insp Meade said: "When you sign up to join the police, you expect to see stuff that people in general society wouldn't see. "But nobody can prepare anybody, cop or not a cop, to see what those officers saw that night. "I've been doing this job for 29 years and I've never had to open a suitcase, not knowing what's in it, and there being a body in there." Mosquera had already run off and was later arrested at Bristol Temple Meads station on 13 July 2024 and charged with both murders.

Man arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after Bexleyheath e-bike and moped crash
A man in his 50s has been arrested after a crash between an e-bike and a moped in Bexleyheath. The incident happened outside Better Gym in Broadway just before 5.30pm on July 18. Officers attended and found a man in his 50s who had been involved in a crash with a 57-year-old man on a moped. The man on the e-bike was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink-driving. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries before being taken to custody. He has since been released with no further action. A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called at 17:27hrs on Friday, 18 July to reports of a road traffic collision between a moped and an e-bike on Broadway, Bexleyheath. "Officers attended the scene where a man on an e-bike, in his 50s, collided with a man, aged 57, on a moped. "The man on the e-bike was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink-driving. "He was taken to hospital with minor injuries before being taken to custody. "He has since been released with no further action. "Enquiries are ongoing. "Please call police on 101 with the reference 6757/18JUL if you were a witness or have any information which may help." A spokesperson for London Ambulance Service said: 'We were called at 5.23pm on Friday 18 July to reports of road traffic collision on Broadway, Bexleyheath.
