
As the Nation Reckons With Diversity, Five Guys Finds Its 'Superpower'

Executives and employees at the company, however, reveal that one of those values rise above the rest.
On its website, Five Guys describes "integrity" as being "honest," saying "what you mean" and doing "what you promise." And it's by those same morals that the Virginia-based fast-food chain carries out its views on diversity.
Erin Roberts knows that better than most and not just because she serves as Five Guys' chief people officer. It's also because, as a mixed-race person who looks white, she's heard plenty of comments that probably wouldn't have been made in front of her if her racial background was more obvious.
Reflecting on those experience, Roberts told Newsweek that's precisely why Five Guys is a workplace where employees are expected to do the right thing, even when people aren't looking.
"You live those values all of the time, regardless of whose presence you're in or what people think of you," she said. "There is a place for everyone [at Five Guys] as long as you believe in our system and respect your coworkers."
This year, Five Guys received four stars on Newsweek's ranking of America's Greatest Workplaces 2025.
The restaurant chain, which has more than 1,900 locations worldwide, also appeared on America's Greatest Workplaces for Diversity 2025, America's Greatest Workplaces for Women 2025, America's Greatest Workplaces for LGBTQ 2025, America's Greatest Workplaces for Gen Z 2025 and America's Greatest Workplaces for Black Americans 2025. All six rankings were published in collaboration with Plant-A Insights Group.

At a time when the federal government is targeting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts, corporate initiatives to promote fairness and belonging have become among the most controversial decisions that a business can make. Five Guys, however, recognizes that its commitment to welcome employees from all walks of life is more about strengthening its existing workforce than anything else.
"We are a product of our industry," Molly Catalano, the chief marketing officer at Five Guys, told Newsweek. "We are a diverse workforce and so...it's not hard to be a diverse company."
"In any initiative, it's looking around at who is there and saying, 'How do we take advantage of the best of what everyone is?'" Catalano said.
As the nation's second-largest private sector employer, the restaurant and food-service industry, which provides 15.7 million jobs or 10 percent of the total U.S. workforce, is more diverse than the overall U.S. workforce.
According to an April data brief published by the National Restaurant Association, 51 percent of restaurant and food-service employees are minorities, compared to 41 percent in the overall workforce, and 55 percent of restaurant and foodservice employees are women, compared to 48 percent of the overall workforce.
"Regardless of any noise in the system around diversity, equity and inclusion, the restaurant industry is diverse," Erika Cospy Carr, vice president of the Multicultural Foodservices and Hospitality Alliance (MFHA), told Newsweek. MHFA, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing DEI across the restaurant industry, is an affiliate of the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation.
Leaning into the diversity of the industry is a "superpower," Cospy Carr said.
"Five Guys is doing this very well and touts it as one of the factors, if you will, about what has made them successful," she said.

Even more remarkable than the industry's racial and gender diversity is its age diversity.
While only 13 percent of U.S. employees are under the age of 25, that age group accounts for 40 percent of employees in the restaurant industry, according to National Restaurant Association. That trend continues into employees under the age of 35, which make up only 35 percent of the overall workforce but a whopping 60 percent of the restaurant and foodservices workforce.
One of the things MHFA has learned about the Gen Z workforce is their appreciation for consistent training and leadership development, Cospy Carr said.
"If young professionals are coming into the restaurant industry, we want the relationship with their closest manager to be one that is in support of their long-term growth and in support of their career trajectory," she said.
"We're find that the middle-manager relationship is very, very important and when it is out of sync with their development and growth within the industry, there's so many other options that they can step away from the industry to go into the gig economy or work for themselves," she said. "We want a stickiness factor that keeps them within the industry."
So far, it seems Five Guys has that stickiness. Roberts, for example, has been with the company for 15 years. Steven Steele, vice president of culture at Five Guys, has been there for nearly 18 years. Catalano is coming up on 20 years.
"It's burgers and fries," Roberts laughed. "But it's also 12,000 lives that we want to take care of. We want to make sure each one of those people has a good experience and gets what they want out of it. They want a part-time job? Great, we have a need for that. If you see this job as a stepping stone to the next opportunity, we have that too. We can meet them where they are."
Will Martin, now a candidate experience specialist, is a living and breathing example of that commitment to professional development.
"I was a burger flipper," Martin told Newsweek.
Martin started as a general manager of a Five Guys restaurant before he moved over to the company's training department, where he got to travel the world and pursue his "personal passion" of teaching other employees how to make burgers and fries. But then he suffered an injury and could no longer train other members of Five Guys' staff.
"I really didn't know what I was going to do," he said. "I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be working a traditional corporate office job. That's just not how I was raised."
Still, Five Guys reached out and after Martin hit it off with Steele, the former "burger flipper" was brought over to the culture department.
"Will's position didn't exist when I came over to HR," Roberts said. "He has made it incredibly successful. He has tons of experience, but he's also continued to learn."
Martin is not the only one.
"There is a career for people who want to learn our system, who believe in our food and our experience and work hard," she said. "It doesn't require an advanced degree to start a Five Guys, and if you are willing and able to do the job, you can advance as far as you're interested in. There are people who are now at the executive VP level despite starting as general managers and assistant managers."
All of that is by design. Five Guys has heavily invested in its employees' professional development across the board. The company offers to pay for degrees, trains its emerging leaders, promotes internally and encourages cross-training so that their staff can spend time exploring other departments within Five Guys. Roberts is especially proud of the company's mentorship program.
"For a long time, we're very good at teaching people burgers and fries, but not necessarily on how to manage staff, expectations, performance reviews and all of that kind of stuff, which is all very important," she said.
To Steele, this dedication to building up employees goes hand-in-hand with Five Guys' commitment to integrity.
"There used to be a saying that nobody's above taking out the trash. That's because everybody has been in these roles, whether that's starting as a crew member, mopping the floors, cleaning up in the kitchen, doing the dishes or all that good stuff," Steele told Newsweek.
The idea that every employee is as critical to the company as the next, that every employee is responsible for the success of Five Guys, is much like the mouth-watering burgers that its restaurants make every day, he said.
"When you're making the perfect burgers and fries, there's all these different toppings and there's all these different ingredients," Steele said. "But just like our employees, there's no one employee that's more important than the other, just like there's no ingredient that's one more important than the other."

Alphabet's Google on Thursday failed to persuade a US appeals panel to overturn a jury verdict and federal court order requiring the technology giant to revamp its app store Play. Canada Goose posts wider loss despite new clothing lines resonating with consumers
TORONTO - Canada Goose Holdings Inc. says its new lines of spring and summer clothing appear to be resonating with consumers, though the company posted a wider net loss in its latest quarter. Chief executive Dani Reiss said apparel such as T-shirts and polos have been some of the company's best sellers in recent months, helping the company change its perception that it's a winter-only brand. 'The spring summer campaign brought a fresh energy to the brand, playful and relevant with a clear message: We do summer too,' Reiss told analysts on a conference call Thursday. Rising temperatures and milder winters have pushed some retailers, including Canada Goose, to rethink their product mix. As a result, the company has been expanding its offerings to include lightweight puffers, sweaters, wind and rain wear, shoes and even eyewear in recent years. Despite the optimism from executives over its new product lines, the luxury parka maker reported a wider net loss of $125.5 million during its fiscal first-quarter, compared with a loss of $74 million during the same quarter last year. The loss was driven partly by higher spending on marketing campaigns and expanding its retail footprint. On an adjusted basis, the Toronto-based company said it lost $1.29 per diluted share in the quarter, compared with an adjusted loss of 80 cents per diluted share last year. While its bottom line took a hit, sales were higher. Revenue for the quarter totalled $107.8 million, up from $88.1 million a year ago. Direct-to-consumer revenue totalled $78.1 million, up 22.8 per cent from a year ago, while wholesale revenue rose 11.9 per cent to $17.9 million. Chief financial officer Neil Bowden said expanding the company's offerings over the last 12-15 months has borne fruit. 'Things are working here,' he told analysts. 'That's why we've got confidence around the sustainability of it in spite of what is still a pretty choppy, tough consumer market.' Consumer confidence has been hampered this year amid ongoing tariff threats from the U.S. and an economic slowdown, leading many shoppers to rein in their spending. Bowden said 75 per cent of the company's products are made in Canada and nearly all comply with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement, making them exempt from U.S. tariffs. But it is paying a 'modestly higher tariff' on its European products. 'We continue to monitor the ongoing developments as it relates to potential new U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods as well as potential second-order impacts on the consumer,' Bowden said. 42-year-old CEO: I turned my hobby into a $50 million-a-year business backed by Ryan Reynolds
Ryan Vesler has been obsessed with vintage sports apparel since childhood. His collection started with classic Air Jordan sneakers and Bo Jackson's Nike merchandise. In college, he earned extra cash by scouring local thrift shops for vintage items to sell on eBay. And in 2007, his obsession inspired him to launch Homage, a Columbus, Ohio-based sports and pop culture apparel brand that brought in more than $50 million in 2024 revenue, according to documents reviewed by CNBC Make It. Homage's apparel bears retro graphics with a vintage aesthetic, including throwbacks featuring classic sports team logos and legendary athletes from various eras. LeBron James helped popularize the brand by rocking one of its shirts, featuring 80's wrestler The Ultimate Warrior, after the Cleveland Cavaliers won the 2016 NBA Championship. "LeBron wore our stuff. That was a 'pinch me' moment and a major brand moment at the same time ... because he's very deliberate about what brand he wears," says Vesler, the company's 42-year-old CEO, who launched Homage from his parents' Ohio basement with a combination of eBay earnings and a few maxed-out credit the past almost-two decades, Homage has slowly worked to ink licensing deals with large organizations like the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, Walt Disney Company, WWE and trading card company Topps. The company's investors include celebrities and athletes like Ryan Reynolds, Jason Kelce and Kevin Durant. This year, Homage expects revenue to increase by a double-digit percentage, according to the company. Here's how Vesler turned his personal thrift shop habit into a growing business with eight-figure annual revenue. At age 13, Vesler combed through racks of clothing at thrift shops in Columbus, looking for the thrill of unearthing a cool, vintage sports jersey or T-shirt. Finding the perfect throwback item, like an old-school Houston Astros rainbow-colored jersey, meant "knowing it was unique, that nobody else had it [and] you couldn't go to the mall and there were, like, 1,000 of them," he says. While studying Spanish language and literature at Ohio University, Vesler ran a side hustle selling piles of vintage sportswear and pop-culture collectibles on eBay. His roommates were "always annoyed ... because [of the] boxes of stuff piling up," he says. Vesler made enough money from the venture — eventually bringing in up to nearly $20,000 annually, he says — to support himself after graduating in 2005, leading him to try his hand at making his own products. He launched Homage from his parents' basement in 2007, using more than $10,000 from his eBay earnings to buy blank American Apparel T-shirts and adorn them with self-designed sports graphics, he says. He wanted his designs be fun, creative and able to evoke the same joy he felt unearthing a unique thrift store find, he says. He took the shirts to local college bookstores. The biggest one in his area — The Ohio State University, with a massive fan base that Vesler likens to that of an NFL team — quickly rejected him. So over the next year, he says, he built a client list of smaller local schools, like his alma mater, to establish Homage's reputation as a high-quality brand. The products sold well enough at smaller schools that Vesler felt emboldened approaching local football icons to partner with Homage. He landed an in-person meeting with Archie Griffin, a two-time Heisman Trophy-winner at Ohio State, and inked a partnership with Griffin to license a series of shirts bearing the former running back's likeness. The shirts helped Homage land its licensing deal with Ohio State in 2008, says Vesler. A lifelong Ohio State fan, he was "catatonic on the floor" in happiness, he says. "I'd say that's the best IP in the world," says Vesler. "I knew that if you could prove yourself at Ohio State, you could go anywhere [in the U.S.]." The Ohio State deal brought an immediate surge of demand, which Homage's handful of employees could barely handle at first, Vesler says: "We never had enough inventory, we didn't have enough staff [and] stores would never send us their purchase orders in a timely fashion." With the revenue from those orders, Vesler increased the number of blank shirts in Homage's inventory at any given time, and hired more staff to handle the larger workload. The company's annual sales topped $1 million for the first time in 2009, says Vesler. Homage continued to sell mostly through college bookstores and its website until 2015, when it landed a national licensing deal with the NBA — due, Vesler says, to a years-long track record of managing Ohio State's massive fan base. Vesler sent a box of T-shirts to his local team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and insists it was a surprise when James, the NBA star, walked off a team plane wearing his brand in 2016. As more athletes wore the brand in public, more partners signed on, including the NFL and Disney's "Star Wars" and Marvel franchises. Yet Homage is still a relatively small player in a highly competitive sports apparel market, led by giants like Fanatics and Nike, that's forecasted to top $173 billion in North American retail sales in 2025, according to a McKinsey & Company report. Vesler says he's focused on gaining market share through pure creativity, in terms of Homage's apparel designs. He's also eyeing international expansion, starting with licensed merchandise for Wrexham A.F.C. — a professional soccer team based in the U.K. that's co-owned by Reynolds, the actor who's invested in Homage. Some of Vesler's other strategic ideas are purely wishful thinking for now: His company isn't large enough, and doesn't have large enough "strategic partners" yet, to create sports-themed experiences like Homage-branded bars or hotels, he says. But no idea is too far-fetched to eventually consider, he notes. "What enables this thing is people saying 'yes' to cool ideas," says Vesler. "Without that, there's no Homage."
