MANGALURU: Academic institutions along the coast of Karnataka have made significant strides toward LGBTQ+ inclusion. These institutions are increasingly opening their doors to create more inclusive academic spaces, a development welcomed by many.
Some institutions have established dedicated LGBTQ+ associations, while others actively support the community through various events and awareness programmes. This progressive shift across the education system marks an important movement in fostering diversity and acceptance within academia.
"Our campuses have been supportive of LGBTQ, including the student council. Currently, numbers from the community are low at Mangaluru campus, and we are ready to help them form a group," said Dr Bhaskaran Unnikrishnan, dean of Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru.
Sandra Sunitha Lobo, professor in Psychology department, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, said their campus has been LGBTQ inclusive for a very long time. "Students have been given the opportunity to express their identity and support those coming out. However, we ask them to be mindful of their classmates who are sensitive about it, or are unaware of their identity," she said, adding that they hold special events as part of the Pride Month, observed in June.

A postgraduate medical student who is from the LGBTQ community, and is studying at a college near Derlakatte shared that over the years, the narrative and how individuals look at us has changed. "There is more awareness, and people have stopped being judgemental about the queer community. Compared to the older generation, the younger generation is more accepting as they are better informed through social media and through their peers," said the student who was studying in Mangaluru for the past seven years.
Campuses are not just being inclusive towards the community, they are even supporting research in the areas pertaining to the community. Dr B Reshmi, associate dean and professor of health information management, Manipal College of Health Professions, said that currently, two funded research projects are being undertaken. These projects aim to address the healthcare facilities and the needs of the community, and also determine the approach healthcare workers should take towards the community members in a medical setting.

Working out at THIS time can help lower blood sugar

Research indicates that the timing of exercise significantly impacts blood sugar levels. A study involving 186 adults revealed that engaging in moderate to vigorous physical activity in the evening leads to the most substantial reduction in blood glucose, particularly for those overweight, obese, or with sedentary habits. Prioritizing afternoon-to-evening movement is feasible for glucose regulation. Struggling to regulate blood sugar? Lifestyle changes, including exercise, may help. But timing is everything. While regular exercise is a good tool to keep glucose levels in check, new research suggests that when you work out could be just as important as how often you do it. A new study conducted by Spanish researchers found that the time of the workout matters if you want to lower blood sugar. The new study is published in Obesity . Timing matters The news study suggests that exercising at a specific time of day may offer greater benefits for people looking to lower their blood sugar naturally. People with a risk for type 2 diabetes or those struggling with insulin resistance may benefit more from this method. The researchers found that engaging in moderate to vigorous physical activity in the evening is good for lowering daily blood sugar levels, with the greatest benefits seen in adults who are overweight, obese, or lead sedentary lifestyles. Though it was known that moderate to vigorous physical activity can enhance glucose homeostasis in adults with overweight and obesity who are at higher risk of developing insulin resistance, little was known about the optimal timing of moderate to vigorous physical activity to improve daily blood glucose control. 'Our results highlight the importance of the field of precision exercise prescription. In clinical practice, certified sports and medical personnel should consider the optimal timing of the day to enhance the effectiveness of the exercise and physical activity programs they prescribe,' Jonatan R. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Ruiz, PhD, professor of physical activity and health, Department of Physical and Sports Education, Faculty of Sport Sciences-Sport and Health University Research Institute (iMUDS), University of Granada, said in a statement. The study To understand the link between physical activity and its impact on blood sugar, the researchers observed 186 adults with an average age of 46 and a body mass index (BMI) of 32.9. The participant wore a device to monitor glucose patterns and physical activity for 14 days. The researchers categorized daily physical activity based on the time of day when it occurred. Days were classified as 'inactive' if no moderate to vigorous physical activity was recorded. Otherwise, activity was grouped into four time-based categories: morning (6 a.m. to noon), afternoon (noon to 6 p.m.), evening (6 p.m. to midnight), or mixed if no single time block accounted for more than 50% of the activity. The findings The study showed that performing more than half of daily moderate to vigorous physical activity in the evening was associated with the greatest reduction in blood glucose levels. This effect was especially pronounced among participants with impaired glucose regulation. 'As the field moves towards individualized exercise prescriptions for different chronic conditions, this study now provides additional insights beyond just telling patients to 'move more,' but instead to move as often as possible and to prioritize afternoon-to-evening movement when feasible for glucose regulation,' Renee J. Rogers, PhD, FACSM, senior scientist, Division of Physical Activity and Weight Management, University of Kansas Medical Center, added. NMC stalls on making med college assessments public

Nine months after the National Medical Commission (NMC) decided to seek legal opinion on whether the assessment forms of medical colleges can be made public, the matter remains unresolved as NMC claimed, in response to an RTI query, that the file is still "under process". As a result, MBBS aspirants are forced to choose medical colleges without access to details of the assessment of the infrastructure and faculty available in a college. The chief information commissioner had ordered the NMC several times in 2024 to make assessment reports public, stating that "disclosing these assessment reports is essential for the aspiring medical students seeking admission". Neither reports of inspection of medical colleges nor standard assessment forms (SAF) are being made public by the NMC. The SAF is mandatory and is meant as an annual self-declaration by a medical college giving information about infrastructure, faculty, patient load, academic activities and so on. In the NMC meeting held on Sept 23, 2024, "the commission opined that the SAF form need not be in public domain" and instructed its Medical Assessment and Rating Board to take further action. However, according to the minutes of the meeting obtained through RTI, V Hekali Zhimomi, an additional secretary in the health ministry, suggested that an opinion should be obtained from the department of legal affairs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo When RTI activist Dr KV Babu asked about the status of the SAF disclosure issue, the NMC responded that "file for seeking legal opinion on the matter of SAF disclosure is under process and hence the information in this regard is not available". NMC had brought in the Aadhaar-Enabled Biometric Attendance System in Aug 2018, but found that people were using silicon thumb imprints to manipulate the system. To counter this, the NMC mandated face-based Aadhaar authentication for faculty attendance in medical colleges from April this year. However, the NMC seems reluctant to adopt the simplest system of making colleges' self-declarations public so that students and public could verify if the faculty, infrastructure and patient load being claimed in the declaration were indeed available. The Medical Council of India, which the NMC replaced, used to make the assessment reports of all medical colleges public. It also used to put up the minutes of all meetings in the public domain. The NMC doesn't do either.

Centre approves supplementary funds for Punjab under National Health Mission

Chandigarh: After standoffs over funding in recent years, the Union ministry of health and family welfare approved supplementary funding of Rs 23.22 crore for Punjab under the National Health Mission (NHM) for the financial year 2025–26. The additional funding aims to boost nutrition support for tuberculosis (TB) patients, promote innovative public health campaigns, and strengthen digital mental health infrastructure across the state. The revised budget signals a shift in Punjab's health priorities toward targeted public health interventions, especially in nutrition, mental health, and disease elimination, within a constrained fiscal space. With the latest approvals, Punjab's total NHM allocation for 2025–26 now stands at Rs 1,841.65 crore, which includes both previously sanctioned funds and the newly approved supplementary proposals. A major portion of the supplementary funding — Rs 19.31 crore — has been earmarked for the Nikshay Poshan Yojana, a direct benefit transfer scheme that provides monthly nutritional support to TB patients. In addition, Rs 2.82 crore has been approved for state-specific TB innovations, such as community engagement and Jan Bhagidari-based awareness campaigns. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The National Deworming Day campaign has also received a boost, with Rs 55.3 lakh allocated for the procurement of Albendazole tablets aimed at treating more than 22.8 lakh children aged 1 to 19 years across the state. Another Rs 49.3 lakh has been sanctioned under the Tele-MANAS initiative — the govt's national mental health helpline project. The funds will cover salaries for essential mental health professionals such as a Senior Consultant, Counsellors, Psychiatric Social Workers, and Clinical Psychologists, along with operational costs for running the state-level Tele-MANAS cell in Punjab. While these new approvals provide much-needed support for priority health areas, they have been offset by an equivalent surrender of previously sanctioned funds that remained unspent. According to the official record, Punjab surrendered Rs 23.22 crore from earlier allocations, which included savings from TB diagnostics, civil works, drug procurement for drug-resistant TB, latent TB, and NCD-related equipment and screening. Officials clarified that the overall NHM resource envelope for Punjab remains unchanged, with the supplementary approvals matched rupee-for-rupee by the surrendered funds. The adjustments are part of the Union health ministry's strategy to allow states to reallocate resources mid-cycle in response to evolving health needs and program performance. THE STANDOFF The Punjab govt and Union health ministry were involved in a tiff over the branding of Ayushman Arogya Kendras as Aam Aadmi Clinics. The dispute led to the suspension of NHM funds of Rs 112 crore for the financial year 2022–23 and Rs 366.41 crore for 2023–24, from a total central allocation of Rs 457.90 crore. In Nov 2024, the two sides reached an agreement to rebrand the clinics as Ayushman Arogya Kendras, aligning with the Centre's guidelines. The renaming process was completed by Jan 2025 and included wall painting, installation of six logos, name boards, and defined border patterns for windows and doors.
