
Who will build the next generation of digital products?
AI is significantly impacting software development. Programmers write code. Their job is to translate product specifications into text a computer can understand, compile, and execute. There is some room for programming creativity to architect an application to simplify future maintenance or improve performance. However the most creative aspects of digital product development (e.g., mobile, wearable, web, and desktop apps) involve humans, from identifying their challenges when contemplating a product to gathering feedback when refining it. Successful digital products require a team of creative, critical thinkers. A typical team includes product owners, designers, developers, project managers, quality assurance specialists, and marketers.
In recent years, low-code and no-code tools have become more capable, making it possible for non-developers to create prototypes and proofs of concept. AI is taking that to another level with its ease of building and the capabilities of the resulting product.
Quantity versus quality in this new era
Firebase Studio and tools like it generate code, not a black box. Suppose the product fails to meet requirements for any reason. It can then either be regenerated from an altered prompt or maintained like a traditional software project by engineers skilled in the project's programming language. That kind of troubleshooting and maintenance will benefit from a trained developer's knowledge and experience.
I'm in favor of tools that help people get ideas out of their heads and onto a device where others can interact with it and provide feedback. Cocktail napkins may be relegated to their more limited wicking roles. But these new capabilities have the potential to rapidly expand the number of available digital products (web products, apps in the App Store, etc.). We could face a quantity over quality challenge with significantly more rough products obscuring the diamonds. Marketing teams will face a greater challenge boosting their product above the noise to be noticed.
Technology and the role of human creativity
The promise for non-developers is compelling, but what about professionals? Digital product professionals with extensive digital product development experience will benefit from advanced AI tools for design exploration, code generation, and test authoring. Drawing on experience, those professionals can direct AI tools to produce higher-quality results than someone with less experience directing the same tools. Lessons learned from prior experience should result in better prompts and, ultimately, better products. A powerful tool in the hands of someone who knows how to wield it can produce excellent results.
A cautionary tale
Decades ago, I was involved in the third rewrite of a struggling software product in the education market. The business owners were convinced their product's problems were tied to their programming language choice. It was early in my career, and the migration was to a language I enjoyed, so I didn't think to ask questions.
As with previous rewrites, the feature set remained essentially the same. The basic architecture remained the same. And the team driving the requirements remained the same. Not surprisingly, the rewrite results were also the same. The product was not noticeably faster or easier to use, and customers didn't like it any more than the previous version.
I learned an important lesson from the project. Technology by itself (in that case, a programming language) rarely moves the product success needle. Solving the right problem with the right basic approach, driven by user feedback and the marketing skills and budget to spread the word, has a far greater impact on the results. The same is true for AI. It is a fantastic tool that bestows the superpower on unskilled people to make really awful software products faster than they ever could before.
Beyond programming: Solve the right problem with empathy
While greater accessibility for non-developers and more powerful tools for skilled professionals are positive, the outlook isn't all rosy. Currently, AI is best at building products when specific instructions are given. The more detail we provide, the better the results. That is very similar to the programmer's role. Businesses that currently thrive by turning detailed specifications into functioning software products have the most to lose when AI tools most closely match their skillset.
There is much more to digital product development than programming. Our clients value creative thinking, critical thinking, empathy, and a passion for creating compelling user experiences. Those characteristics are vital in ensuring we're solving the correct problems for our clients. Less programming effort will be required to build digital products. However, for the foreseeable future, there will still be a significant need for the distinctly human creativity and skills that make products great.

Google is working on a new Gemini logo with familiar colors
Just when we thought Gemini couldn't be Google-fied anymore, the Mountain View, California-based company succeeded in surprising us. Soon after the tech giant began rolling out Song Search on the Android Gemini app, paired with support for Scheduled Actions, it now seems to be giving the Gemini app and its logo a more Google-esque look. The app's familiar blue and purple tone, which can be observed across instances of the Gemini branding, is in the midst of being replaced with a more colorful hue — one that looks similar to Google Assistants signature multicolored branding. Hints about the redesign were spotted in the latest Google app beta build (version beta) by the folks over at Android Authority, surfacing Google's well-known color palette across the app's UI. Old, new, old, new The change was observed in the app's splash screen, which highlights an animated red, yellow, green, and blue Gemini logo for a brief second when you open a new instance of the app. Similarly, the logo on the onboarding screen appears in the same Google-themed colors, as seen in the screenshots above. Eagle-eyed users would have also spotted the lack of blue and purple on the "Get to know Gemini, your AI assistant" text at the top. The change also makes its way to the Gemini logo that appears above the AI tool's responses. These aren't huge changes by any means, and won't change the way users utilize Gemini. However, the refresh does make the experience feel a little more aligned and consistent with Google's overall brand identity. For what it's worth, these changes were manually enabled, and they won't surface for you in the beta build of the app just yet. The changes will likely make their way out widely with a future update, which might happen around the time when Google Assistant is fully phased out later this year. The stock market has a secret weapon that's powering record highs
Morgan Stanley sees stock market recovery with potential for more all-time highs. Earnings revisions breadth has improved, driven by more positive analyst estimates. The S&P 500 expected to reach 6,500, aided by earnings growth and a weaker dollar. The stock market has made an impressive recovery from its April low, and Morgan Stanley sees one strong sign that the gains are set to continue. With trade concerns and geopolitical conflicts easing, the market made new highs again on Monday, adding to gains amid fresh progress on trade. Here's where major indexes stood at 11:50 a.m. ET on Monday: S&P 500: 6,190.75, up 0.23% Dow Jones Industrial Average: 44,027.87, up 0.37% (+160.76 points) Nasdaq Composite: 20,338.95, up 0.25% As headwinds from earlier this year, such as tariffs and fears of an AI spending slowdown, begin to ease, a key source of strength for the stock market has rebounded. Earnings revisions breadth, or the proportion of analysts who have raised their estimates minus the proportion who have lowered them, has improved significantly in the past few months. In April, Bloomberg Intelligence data found that estimates for earnings-per-share growth had fallen from 11.4% to 6.9% since the beginning of 2025. At the April bottom, earnings revision breadth stood at -25%. It's since improved to -5%, and its recovery has been swift. Earlier in June, earnings revisions breadth was at -10%. Going forward, Morgan Stanley anticipates a bullish rate of change on EPS revisions to be a key factor in further stock market gains, especially as earnings revisions breadth ticks closer to a positive number. "On that score, specifically, the message is crystal clear. The ERB bottomed on April 17th around MSFT's earnings report and has not looked back since," Morgan Stanley analysts led by chief investment officer Mike Wilson wrote. "As we have noted for the past couple of months, the recovery in this metric has been more about positive revisions rather than fewer negative ones and when that is the case, the forward equity market returns tend to be stronger," More upward revisions have typically led to 12% S&P 500 stock gains in the next 12 months, while fewer negative revisions have led to only 8% gains over the same time period, they added. Morgan Stanley expects the S&P 500 to end the year at 6,500, implying a gain of about 5% from current record levels. With analysts growing more bullish on corporate earnings, the outlook points to a potentially sustainable growth trajectory. The bank attributes the plunge in earnings estimates earlier this year largely to perceived weakness in the Magnificent Seven stocks. But now, earnings growth is on track to outperform overall economic growth, something that wasn't the case in the 2022 to 2024 bull market. The bank expects a weaker dollar and tax incentives from the Big Beautiful Bill to continue encouraging positive earnings outlooks, and also contribute to a broadening market. "As we head into the second half of the year, the equity market is likely to be driven by more bullish rate of change on EPS revisions, monetary policy expectations, and back-end rates/term premium," Mike Wilson, the bank's chief equity strategist, wrote. "This is a notably different environment than large parts of 2023-2024 when prospects of easier monetary and fiscal policy drove markets higher despite stagnating EPS revisions." Big Oil's $1.2 Trillion Bet? WoodMac Predicts CCUS Market Surge
Global research and consultancy group Wood Mackenzie has predicted that the global Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) market will surge 28-fold by 2050 to 2,061 million tonnes per annum, surpassing trillions of dollars in value. According to WoodMac, countries across the globe led by U.S., Canada and Europe have committed $80 billion for CCUS so far, with just 50 CCUS projects with a capacity to store 51 million tonnes of CO2 per year currently operational. WoodMac has also predicted that the gap between capture capacity and storage capacity will narrow from nearly 50% in 2030 to 20% in 2050. However, the analysts are less optimistic about near-term growth prospects for CCUS, and have revised their 10-year forecast down by 22% due to policy uncertainty in the U.S. coupled with slow policy evolution in Asia. Further, WoodMac has predicted that most countries that have set carbon capture targets will only be able to achieve 50-70% of their goals by 2050. Even more alarming: WoodMac says point-source capture will only be capable of abating 4% of total emissions by 2050, short of the 6% required to restrict global warming to 2.5C by 2050. Nevertheless, the explosive growth will offer fresh opportunities for oil and gas companies. Previously, we reported that Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill' will handicap the nascent hydrogen sector bill but still provides tax credits for carbon capture and sequestration under Section 45Q. 'We expect our investment into the Donaldsonville CCS project will increase our free cash flow in the range of $100 million per year due to the United States' 45Q tax credit for permanently sequestering CO2,' CF Industries (NYSE:CF) said in its latest annual report. Big Oil has invested billions of dollars in CCUS projects, including Exxon Mobil's (NYSE:XOM) latest project targeting power-hungry U.S. data centers. Exxon recently unveiled a groundbreaking plan wherein the company will provide low-carbon power to the U.S. data centers powering the AI boom. Exxon's proposal outlines a first-of-its-kind facility that will use natural gas to produce electricity while capturing more than 90% of the CO2 emissions. The captured emissions will then be stored deep underground. ExxonMobil's current CCS technology supports industries involved in steel, hydrogen and ammonia production, with the company having secured agreements to store up to 6.7 million tons of CO2 annually for these sectors. Last year, Exxon acquired CCUS specialist Denbury Inc. in an all-stock transaction valued at $4.9B, or $89.45/share. Denbury recycles CO2 through its Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) operations and uses it to produce environmentally-friendly, carbon-negative Blue Oil. The company owns the largest CO2 pipeline network in the U.S. at 1,300 miles, including nearly 925 miles of CO2 pipelines in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi, as well as 10 onshore sequestration sites. According to Exxon CEO Darren Woods, the company's Low Carbon business has the potential to outperform its legacy oil and gas business within a decade and generate hundreds of billions in revenues. Meanwhile, last month, Shell (NYSE:SHEL), Equinor (NYSE:EQNR), and TotalEnergies (NYSE:TTE) expanded their Northern Lights CCS project with $714 million in total investments. The decision comes after a deal with Swedish energy company, Stockholm Exergi, which has pledged to send up to 900,000 tonnes of CO? each year over a 15-year span. Northern Lights is now capable of storing at least 5 million tonnes of CO? per year, more than triple the original target of 1.5 million tonnes. Canada's CCUS outlook is, however, less rosy. According to the experts, Canada's proposed $16.5B CCUS project by the Pathways Alliance hangs in the balance after the resignation of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The giant project would capture harmful carbon dioxide emissions from the Canadian oilsands, the country's heaviest-emitting sector. 'I can't imagine a huge project like that could really move forward in a time like right now,' Michael Bernstein, executive director of the non-profit group Clean Prosperity, told Bloomberg. 'When you're looking at a project that has at least a 15-year time horizon, you want as much certainty as possible. And there's just more uncertainty than I can remember in my whole time doing this work right now,' he added. A lack of pipelines and heavy emissions has been weighing heavily on the Canadian heavy crude sector for years, with several companies exiting the country after coming under pressure to invest in 'cleaner' projects. According to research firm Rystad Energy, oil sands production in Alberta generates ~160 pounds of carbon per barrel of crude pumped, the highest of any oilfield in the world.
