
Islam has a rich history of depicting Muhammad
Much of the backlash over these apparent depictions of Muhammad is rooted in the belief that Islam declares any imagery of him haram, or forbidden; this view seems to be supported by a few hadiths, or sayings of Muhammad, which suggest that because drawings 'create life' they trespass on what Muslims perceive to be Allah's prerogative. But the sweeping assertion banning Muhammad's depiction, often reported as fact in Western media, upholds the most regressive interpretation of the religion as the sole representation of the Muslim faith. It is important to push back against this.
For centuries, Muslims have depicted Muhammad. Eleventh-century Persian epics like Varka and Golshah and Abu Rayhan Al-Biruni's The Remaining Signs of Past Centuries feature some of the earliest illustrations of Muhammad during significant stages of his prophethood, including him narrating and explaining Quranic verses.
The Mojmal al-Tawarikh, or Compendium of Histories, highlighting the history of Persian kings, also showcase numerous images of Muhammad, including him receiving revelations from the angel Jibraeel. A frequently illustrated image is of the Mi'raj, the Islamic tale of Muhammad's ascension to heaven on a winged horse as part of his journey to Al-Aqsa mosque, the event that asserts the Islamic claim over Jerusalem.
The idea of a categorical ban on drawings of Muhammad appears to be grounded in the Salafi strain of Islam, which, in recent decades, has been proliferated by Sunni Arab monarchies as part of their bid to assert control over the Muslim world. But while many of the depictions of Muhammad can be found in Shia Islam, there are numerous examples among Sunni practitioners as well – especially the Sufi interpretations such as the Siyer-i-Nebi, an epic on Muhammad's life published around 1388. Nowadays, such images are rarely mentioned – not least in the West, where those who dare depict Muhammad soon find themselves in trouble. In 2022, for instance, The Lady of Heaven film, which featured Muhammad's daughter Fatimah, resulted in a 'blasphemy' backlash. The movie was subsequently pulled from cinemas in various countries, including in the UK.
Violent backlashes over cartoons of Muhammad have been witnessed the world over, as seen in the aftermath of Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten's publication of satirical sketches of the prophet of Islam in 2005, which resulted in around 150 deaths and attacks on European embassies. Eight Charlie Hebdo journalists were among 12 killed in a jihadist shooting on the French satirical magazine in 2015 over Muhammad caricatures. Showing students cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad resulted in French teacher Samuel Paty being decapitated in 2020. When a teacher at Batley Grammar School in West Yorkshire did the same, he was forced into hiding. He now lives under a new identity.
Such incidents have made publications extremely wary of depicting Muhammad. But what makes the ongoing cartoon row in Turkey all the more absurd is the long and rich tradition of drawing Muhammad in Ottoman history. Erdogan appears to be on a quest to replicate a neo-Ottoman empire, but this is one area of Ottoman history he seems rather less keen to emulate.
LeMan's cartoon does not satirise or mock Muhammad; it illustrates Moses and Muhammad shaking hands in the sky while there is war and destruction in the background. Regardless of whether the Muhammad in question was Islam's prophet – or a representation of Muslims with the most common masculine first name, as the magazine insisted – the message upheld peace between the Jewish and Muslim communities amidst the conflicts in the Middle East.
The mob, unsurprisingly, appears blind to this interpretation – so, too, does Erdogan. Instead, his government has resorted to more typical Islamist intimidation tactics against a magazine that has been critical of it. It is a move designed to silence dissenters.
In Turkey, the Kemalist left has already surrendered significant space to Erdogan, endorsing Islamic modesty codes such as the hijab in stark contradiction of traditional, secular laiklik values of the Turkish republic. This row – and the capitulation to the Islamists – clearly shows the direction of travel in Turkey. Turkey has now effectively joined the list of Muslim countries that have adopted blasphemy laws.

Why I took my children to Gaza protests at CCA
I've been protesting more and more recently. Watching the horrifying scenes unfolding in Gaza for more than 18 months, I felt powerless. My children were asking me why adults and children were murdered and I struggled to answer that question. I decided that I needed to do more. I also decided that I would include my children in my action, where appropriate, so they could learn about the world and our right to protest. There will come a time when the children of today ask their parents what they did to stop this genocide, and I wanted to make sure I could say I had acted. I regularly email my MP but they rarely respond, take little action for the people of Palestine and conflate Zionism and Judaism. I have also taken my children to meet our MP, as we want them to understand that our MPs are elected to represent us in Westminster and that we have the right to ask them questions and to hold them to account if they remain silent on injustice. Read more So I joined Mothers Against Genocide Scotland, a grassroots collective calling for the immediate end to all genocide across the globe and lasting peace and justice for all oppressed peoples. I immediately found a network of people who felt exactly like I did – compelled to act not in spite of being a mother, but because we are mothers. Everyone in the group has multiple identities: we are mothers, sisters, aunties. We are women of colour, white women, we are Muslim, Christian, Jewish, atheist, and more. We are many things, and yet, at our core is a connection with mothers who mourn their devastating losses whilst caring for others. Our activities include protest; mutual learning and solidarity events; fundraising; and political advocacy. The images of children killed by UK part-made weapons stay with us. We do not ignore the news. We mourn together, we organise and we act. We keep conversations about Gaza going in our families, our circles and wider communities. Some of these are minuscule actions. But every action is a form of protest. There is a socially-constructed perception of motherhood: mothers are selfless, nurturing and non-disruptive. Concepts like 'gentle parenting', women's rights and access to healthcare exist, but we've painfully learned they only apply to certain groups and certainly not to mothers and families in Palestine. Recently 60 members of Mothers Against Genocide Scotland took part in 48-hour rolling fast as a small act of solidarity with the people of Gaza who are experiencing forced starvation and in protest at the lack of action from the UK government. Each of us who took part described how hard it was to look after our children whilst hungry. Everyone who undertook the fast described the guilt of knowing that we had the privilege to finish any time, and that mothers in Gaza cannot. The amount I would normally spend on coffee and meals for those days, I donated to mutual aid organisations in Gaza. I know it's a small act but it started so many conversations with people, and since these rolling fasts Mothers Against Genocide Scotland has more than tripled in size. Read more The more I read, the more I'm discovering our own complicity. I recently discovered that the Scottish Parliament hosts a cross-party group called Building Bridges with Israel. Israel is committing war crimes in Gaza with its collective punishment of a civilian population. They are also committing war crimes with illegal settlements in the West Bank, this is evidenced by international institutions. Do we really want to build bridges with a rogue state which flouts international law? Taking my children to national demonstrations or to solidarity events has been an incredibly powerful way for them to learn about the world and about our responsibility in it. But watching the heavy-handed arrests in London of peaceful protestors over the past few weeks and witnessing Police Scotland's arrest last Tuesday has shaken us. The latest YouGov poll tells us that more than half of people in the UK oppose Israel's actions in Gaza. Of those 55 per cent, an overwhelming 82 per cent believe they amount to the crime of genocide. Many of us have written to MPs and MSPs and gone to their constituency surgeries to ask them to do more. And yet still there are only words, not actions from our Prime Minister and First Minister. Congregation flees after arsonist sets fire to an Australian synagogue door
An arsonist set fire to the door of a Melbourne synagogue and forced the congregation to flee on Friday, seven months after criminals destroyed a synagogue in the same Australian city with an accelerant-fueled blaze that left a worshipper injured. A man doused the double front doors of the downtown East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation and set it alight around 8 p.m., a police statement said on Saturday. Around 20 worshippers sharing a meal to mark the Shabbat Jewish day of rest evacuated through a rear door and no one was injured, police said. Fire fighters extinguished the blaze which was contained to the front entrance, police. A wave of antisemitic attacks has roiled Australia since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas assault on Israel triggered the war in Gaza. Jewish and Muslim organizations and hate researchers have recorded drastic spikes in hate-fueled incidents on both groups. They caused extensive damage by spreading a liquid accelerant with brooms throughout the building before igniting it. A worshipper sustained minor burns. No charges have been laid for that attack, which Prime Minister Anthony Albanese blamed on antisemitism. The Victorian Joint Counter-Terrorism Team, which includes Victoria state police, federal police and Australia's main domestic spy agency, said the fire was likely a politically-motivated attack. Police say synagogue attack is a serious crime Acting Victoria Police Commander Zorka Dunstan described the latest synagogue fire as a serious crime. Police released a CCTV image of a suspect. 'I'd like to make it very clear that we do recognize that these crimes are disgusting and abhorrent. But at this stage, we are not declaring this a terrorist incident,' Dunstan told reporters. 'In the course of our investigation, we will examine the intent and the ideology of the persons involved, or person, to determine if this is in fact terrorism. Anti-Defamation Commission chair Dvir Abramovich, a leading opponent of antisemitism in Australia, said diners were terrorized as the group chanted ' Death to the IDF,' referring to the Israel Defense Forces. 'Melbourne, for one night, stopped being a safe place for Jews,' Abramovich said. Melbourne Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece condemned both the synagogue and restaurant incidents. 'These criminal acts against a Melbourne synagogue and an Israeli business are absolutely shocking,' Reece said. 'All of us as a community need to stand up against it.'
