Jenna Flessner a glue to Washington's softball success

WASHINGTON, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — Nothing seems to be stopping Jenna Flessner these days.
Not even a bloody pitching hand, which didn't stop her from beating Metamora last week.
'It wouldn't stop bleeding,' said the Washington pitcher. 'We tried tape, glue, it didn't stay. Finally, it worked. We got it under control.'
Flessner has been under control as the Panther's leader with her bat and her pitching arm. Perhaps it's fitting that a player who needed some medical glue to stop bleeding on her thumb has also been the glue to a team that's state ranked and in the hunt for a conference title.
She says her team has stuck together since the deaths of the father and grandfather of teammate Bayley Parrott. Both men were killed in an auto accident while in Tennessee to watch the Panthers play in an early-season tournament.
'Having to go through something so hard in the beginning with Bayley's dad, it has brought us together so much,' Flessner said. 'Everyone has picked each other up. Our team chemistry is so good.'
The Panthers are off to a 25-2 start. They are 11-1 in the Mid-Illini Conference just a half-game behind leader Dunlap (11-0).
Washington coach Stephanie Lawson has seen Flessner grow into her role as a positive influence on this team.
'That's contagious for everyone else. We always say 'lead by example.' We need leaders as well,' said Lawson. 'She's one of the one's as a senior that has made an impact.'
Flessner has always been able to hit but this is her first season as Washington's top pitcher. She says she's eager to stay in that role as the staff ace, hoping to lead the Panthers to a conference title.
Banged-up thumb or not.
'It's been great. I've enjoyed being the pitcher, knowing that they are all there for me is so great. I'm there for my team. It's a vital position,' said Flessner. 'I'm giving it my all, 100 percent. It's been great.'

Who is Mike DeBartolo? Meet Nationals interim GM set to make first overall pick in 2025 MLB draft

The Nationals shook up their front office on Sunday, firing manager Dave Martinez and general manager Mike Rizzo amid a 37-53 season. Martinez and Rizzo brought Washington a World Series title in 2019, but they've struggled in recent years to match their success. Rizzo, specifically, had been the Nationals' general manager since 2009 and with the organization since 2007. Owner Mark Lerner decided that the organization needed a change, especially as Washington holds the No. 1 pick in this year's draft. Advertisement In Rizzo's place, the Nationals named Mike DeBartolo as the interim general manager. While DeBartolo is only in charge in an interim capacity, he is tasked with making an important decision while holding the No. 1 pick. Here's who will be making the first pick of the draft for the Nationals. 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Who is Mike DeBartolo? Mike DeBartolo is a baseball executive who has been with the Nationals since 2012. He started out as an intern, then worked his way up to become the assistant general manager over the past few years. During his time with Washington, DeBartolo held positions including Baseball Operations Assistant, Manager of Baseball Research and Development, and Director of Baseball Operations. He was named Assistant General Manager in 2019 and has also served as both Vice President and Senior Vice President since then. Advertisement DeBartolo has a background in analytics, as he worked for Cambridge Associates before joining the Nationals. "Mike DeBartolo is a smart and thoughtful executive, and we're fortunate to have him as part of our organization," Nationals owner Mark Lerner said in a statement. "As we hold the No. 1 overall pick in this year's MLB Draft and look ahead to the trade deadline, we are confident in his ability to lead the baseball operations staff through these next, important months." The Nationals have many options to choose from when it comes to who they will take with the No. 1 overall pick. Advertisement One of the most frequent names connected with the Nationals has been Ethan Holliday, the son of Matt Holliday and brother of Jackson Holliday. Like his brother, Ethan will make the jump from high school to join an MLB franchise, and he may go first in the draft like Jackson did with the Orioles in 2022. If Washington doesn't take Holliday, they could also go with a college pitcher. LSU's Kade Anderson, FSU's Jamie Arnold and Tennessee's Liam Doyle are all expected to go high on Sunday. MORE: MLB Mock Draft 2025 Nationals No. 1 pick history The Nationals have only held the No. 1 pick twice in their franchise history, even dating back to when they were the Expos. However, both of those picks were extremely successful. Advertisement In 2009 and 2010, Washington held back-to-back first overall picks that would change the franchise. In 2009, the Nationals took Stephen Strasburg out of San Diego State, and in 2010, they took Bryce Harper out of high school. Both players would become franchise players, and Strasburg played a key role in the team's first World Series title in 2019. MORE: Juan Soto, Trea Turner lead list of MLB All-Star snubs

Washington's football team has seen a nearly perfect rookie season for a quarterback quickly turn into a disaster in the past. Ex-NFL star Cam Newton hopes that Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels doesn't travel down the same path. In a recent sit-down discussion with a well-known Commanders fan, Wale, Newton asked the rapper if he was worried about the possibility of Daniels being the next Robert Griffin III. "There is nobody who had the game in a chokehold like Robert Griffin III," Newtown said. "I have to tip my hat to him. For sure [one of the best rookie seasons of all time]. I see that same thing happening for Jayden, and being in that community, do you fear that?" Cam Newton discusses with Wale of the possibility of Jayden Daniels being a 'one-hit wonder' and similarities between him & RG3 Some viewers believe Cam is jealous and hating on Jayden. Thoughts? 🤔 (🎥:@FunkyFriday) — brandon (@JayDanielsMVP) July 5, 2025 Wale responded by making it clear there's always a sense of fear when young quarterbacks hit such a high point early on in their career. "You always fear... We've got PTSD of not winning for so long," Wale said. "We don't even know how to have good things. We don't know what it's like to be like, having five primetime games this year. We don't know! There's a reason why." During his 17-game stint, Daniels didn't look like a quarterback who experienced growing pains. In fact, he put together an MVP-worthy campaign in year one. "This is the kid from LSU, so we're like, 'Damn, okay, when is the honeymoon over?' It's easy to think like that," Wale added. "But, I've got to believe in the new organization, new GM, they've got plans for the new stadium. We're going in the right direction and trying to right them wrongs for so many years."
