Alan Jones's lawyers have ‘grave concerns' about legality of police phone search, court hears
Jones is on bail and was excused from Tuesday's hearing at Sydney central local court but his lawyer, Bryan Wrench, complained about the police download of Jones's phone.
'We then wrote to the police regarding our concerns about a search conducted on the 18th of November,' Wrench told the court. 'The legality, journalistic privilege, as well as issues regarding legal privilege.'
As a result of this legal complaint to the New South Wales police, the force had engaged lawyers, Wrench said.

The 84-year-old has allegedly committed a range of offences in various places in NSW, including Newtown, Sydney city, Fitzroy Falls, Alexandria and Tamworth. Jones is a former 2GB and Sky News Australia broadcaster.
In a brief hearing before magistrate Jennifer Giles, Wrench said he also had an issue with an apparent delay in providing the defence with the entire brief of evidence, and accused the prosecution of not meeting its duties of disclosure.
Since the last hearing in May, the defence had received more witness statements, which Wrench said he was was 'quite concerned about' because the prosecution had had them since November and December, but only just provided them.
This is not 'a selective prosecution' and 'they have to give us everything', Wrench said.
Wrench asked on Tuesday for an extension of the charge certification process, which was granted and will now be heard on 18 September.
The prosecutor will review the evidence and confirm the charges by that date.
In total, Jones is facing 11 counts of aggravated indecent assault, 20 counts of assault with act of indecency, two counts of sexually touching another person without consent and two counts of common assault.
Police set up Strike Force Bonnefin in March 2024 to investigate alleged indecent assaults and sexual touching incidents allegedly involving Jones, after they were raised by the Sydney Morning Herald's investigative reporter Kate McClymont.
Jones has denied all wrongdoing and said he was planning legal action against Nine newspapers for the 'demonstrably false' allegations.
He last appeared in court in December, when it was confirmed he will face a jury trial on the charges.
'I am certainly not guilty, and I'll be presenting my case to a jury, as you heard this morning,' he said.
'I want you to understand this, these allegations are all either baseless or they distort the truth. And you should know that prior to my arrest I was given no opportunity by police to answer any of these allegations.'

Gruesome picture exposes horrific act against helpless pelican - as authorities launch desperate search
A pelican 'with the most hideous of injuries' has evaded wildlife volunteers trying to save its life. The Wildlife Welfare Organisation SA Inc (WWO) sent volunteers to Meningie, in the state's southeast, after members of the public reported the bird on Sunday. Somehow still alive, the pelican was spotted perched next to another pelican on the edge of a lake with an arrow lodged through its head. Volunteers Bridgette and Scott searched for more than two hours but ultimately failed to find the bird. Instead the WWO asked others to keep an eye out for it as it was not able to afford to send any volunteers out for a second trip to find it. 'WWO are still on alert in case it is spotted again,' a spokesperson wrote in a statement. 'Our resources are stretched to the limit, as most of the time it's a whole day round trip for our rescue teams.' The WWO reported that the bird was attacked to Crimestoppers and has said it will remain vigilant for any more news regarding its whereabouts. After their unsuccessful trip to Meningie, Bridgette and Scott travelled 34 kilometres northwest to Narrung in an effort to help more injured birds. There they 'successfully apprehended' a different pelican with a fishing hook imbedded in its foot joint. 'This pelican was in a very debilitated state on arrival and today was assessed by Dr Erik and the SKER team. X-rays showed a serious bone infection in the joint,' the animal welfare group's statement said. Despite the infection and the hook having been imbedded in the bones the group said Dr Erik was able to remove it successfully. 'Peace at last for this poor bird,' the WWO wrote. Other birds to have evaded capture around the area were a pelican spotted in Cadell with a hole in its pouch that caused fish to fall out and another at Waikerie with a fractured lower beak that cannot be used to eat. 'Our hearts break for all of these poor birds, and these are only the ones that get reported.' Anyone who manages to spot any of these birds has been encouraged to contact the WWO regarding their whereabouts.

Britain will follow Australia into a crime storm with the Tobacco and Vapes bill
'A terrified tobacco runner was forced to tie up his friends and then bind his own feet, before Alameddine gangsters allegedly began cutting off his big toe in a horrific moment that illustrates how violence is part of doing business in Sydney's gang wars.' This opening line, from the Sydney Morning Herald last month, is the kind of thing you might expect in a story about the cocaine trade, but it was a tonne of illegal tobacco stored in a warehouse that the gang was after. Australia has become a cautionary tale of what not to do with tobacco and vapes. It has the highest cigarette taxes in the world and has banned vapes completely. It has always banned the sale of nicotine vapes, but that didn't work so they banned the importation of nicotine vapes. That didn't work either so they banned all vapes and made nicotine vapes available on prescription only. Again, it hasn't worked. For every vape sold on prescription, 1700 are sold on the black market. The most visible sign of failure is the firebombing of tobacconists and vape shops that has become a regular feature of the evening news, especially around Melbourne. There have been more than 230 arson attacks and a string of public shootings in the last two years as gangs fight for market share in the 'tobacco turf wars'. Could it happen here? There is no reason why not. Illicit vapes and counterfeit cigarettes are being sold more or less openly on high streets up and down the country. We have the second highest cigarette taxes in Europe (after Ireland) and the government is on the cusp of introducing the Tobacco and Vapes Bill which will ban a growing number of adults from buying tobacco products from 1 January 2027. Even the Australians haven't been daft enough to dabble with this form of prohibition. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill will also allow the government to restrict the flavours of legal vapes, thereby giving the black market a lucrative new niche. Not content with banning disposable vapes last month, the government is going to double the cost of using refillable e-cigarettes by imposing a tax of £2.20 (plus VAT) per bottle next year. If you wanted to make a bad situation worse, you could hardly design a better set of policies than this. Sales of legal cigarettes nearly halved between 2021 and 2024 despite the number of smokers only falling by 5 per cent. It is obvious that the illicit market picked up the slack and yet HMRC claims that only one in ten cigarettes smoked in Britain is illegal. Reassured by such Panglossian factoids, virtue-signalling politicians have given the Tobacco and Vapes Bill minimal scrutiny and are patting themselves on the back for creating a 'smoke-free Britain'. It is a fantasy bordering on madness. They have picked the worst time to be complacent. The police are too busy to play whack-a-mole with Britain's countless illicit tobacco retailers. A £2 billion drop in tobacco duty revenue has already been added to Rachel Reeves' black hole. For the time being, the violence associated with Britain's booming black market tobacco trade is less visible than Australia's but it will only take a bit more prodding from guileless politicians for it to come out of the shadows.

Man charged with sexually assaulting four women during treatments at luxury spa
A man has been charged with sexually assaulting four women during treatments at a luxury health spa. Ibrahim Ali, 36, of Percy Place in Datchet, Berkshire, was charged on Saturday in relation to four incidents at the Nirvana Spa in Wokingham, Thames Valley Police said. Four women reported being touched inappropriately during treatments at the spa. The suspect was subsequently charged with four counts of sexual assault by touching following a police investigation. Nirvana Spa has an annual membership of more than £2,200 and describes itself as 'the UK's leading pure water retreat' on its website. In a statement, the spa said: 'We are aware of the outcome of a police investigation involving a massage therapist who previously worked at Nirvana Spa. First and foremost, we want to express our heartfelt empathy to anyone affected by this matter. 'Matters of this nature are taken extremely seriously by Nirvana Spa and as such there was an immediate internal investigation. 'We can confirm that the individual in question is no longer employed by Nirvana Spa, and we have fully cooperated with the police throughout their investigation. 'We cannot comment further on an ongoing court case but the safety, trust and well-being of our customers have always been, and will always remain, our highest priority.' Ali will appear at Reading Magistrates' Court on August 6.
