Dozens arrested for Indonesian love scam ring targeting American men
Police made the arrests after being tipped off about suspicious activity at a rented home in Denpasar, the island's capital.
A total of 38 suspects, seven of them women, were arrested.
"The suspects arrested worked as operators whose job is to find the love scam victims; they targeted Americans who have a Telegram account," Bali police chief Daniel Adityajaya told a press conference.
"They pretended to be women by using women's pictures and fake identity to ensnare their victims."
The suspects confessed they were working for someone who controlled the business from Cambodia to lure American men to hand over sensitive information, Daniel said.
They chatted up their victims through the Telegram messenger app and sent them fake links.
The suspects were paid US$200 each per month to steal the victims' data and information, Daniel said.
Police initially detained nine suspects together, leading to the arrest of the others accused of a role in the syndicate.
The suspects, all Indonesians, face up to 12 years in prison if found guilty of violating the country's electronic transaction law.
Police had previously said many scammers had moved to Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries after China cracked down on domestic networks.
In 2019, Indonesian police arrested 85 Chinese nationals and six Indonesians over an online scam that tricked victims out of millions of dollars.
In 2023, they arrested 88 Chinese nationals in Batam, in the Indonesian province of Riau Islands, for running a syndicate that had scammed hundreds of victims in China by luring them into sexual acts and then blackmailing them with video footage.

KYIV — Russia attacked cities across Ukraine overnight with hundreds of drones and a missile strike, hitting energy infrastructure and wounding at least 15 people. Ukraine's air force said Russia launched 400 drones and one ballistic missile, primarily targeting Kharkiv, Kryvyi Rih and Vinnytsia — three cities in different parts of Ukraine. "Russia does not change its strategy, and to effectively counter this terror we need a systemic strengthening of defences: more air defences, more interceptor (drones), more determination to make Russia feel our response," Zelenskiy wrote on Wednesday. The head of the military administration in the southeastern city of Kryvyi Rih, Oleksandr Vilkul, said Russian forces conducted an extended attack with a missile and 28 drones. He said power and water supplies had been disrupted in some areas. A 17-year-old boy had been severely injured in the attack and was fighting for his life in hospital, Vilkul added. In Vinnytsia and the surrounding region, eight people were wounded, according to Ukraine's interior ministry. In Kharkiv, a frequent target of Russian attacks, regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov said at least 17 explosions were recorded in a 20-minute drone attack in which three people were injured. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said air defence units had gone into action for a time in the capital, but there were no reports of casualties or damage there. Russia has killed thousands of civilians in attacks on Ukrainian cities since launching its full-scale invasion more than three years ago. Moscow says civilian infrastructure such as energy systems are legitimate targets because they help Ukraine's war effort. Over 600 Telegram groups in Singapore selling, advertising vapes removed by HSA

SINGAPORE – More than 600 Telegram groups advertising or selling vapes and Kpods to Singaporeans have been taken down by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA). The agency said on July 16 that these channels promoting vapes have been removed since April 2024. This is the first time HSA is releasing figures on the number of Telegram groups being taken down for selling vapes. In May 2025, HSA and the Ministry of Health said in a statement that more than 6,800 online listings of vapes and its related components were removed from e-commerce and social media platforms from January 2024 to March 2025. The figure was more than double the 3,100 listings removed in 2023. These platforms included Facebook, Instagram and Carousell, but not Telegram. On July 16, HSA said its Tobacco Regulation Branch has been actively monitoring and enforcing the ban on advertisements and sales of vapes, both offline and online. Using automated tools, the agency said it actively tracks online listings, social media posts and messaging platforms to detect and remove illegal advertisements and posts. Its spokesman said: 'HSA has also intensified operations against both physical and online distribution networks, strengthened border controls with the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority, and increased enforcement presence in public spaces where vaping is prevalent.' On one channel, around eight messages would be sent every minute to its members, listing the flavours available and the prices. When ST launched its anti-vaping campaign, Vaping: The Invisible Crisis , on July 13, several Telegram channels selling vapes became significantly less active. Others, however, continued with a flurry of texts in a bid to attract buyers. In reply to ST's queries, the Health Promotion Board (HPB) said 116,800 participants have joined its I Quit programme , designed to help participants quit smoking and vaping, from May 2014 to December 2024. HPB said the programme does not keep track of which participants are smokers or vape users. From January 2024 to March 2025, close to 1,800 young people received vaping and smoking cessation counselling. HPB added that during the same period, almost 118,500 students from schools and institutes of higher learning were involved in activities aimed at raising awareness about the harms of vaping. Citing the World Health Organisation, HPB said vapes are harmful to one's health , warning that vapes are not safer alternatives to regular cigarettes. It said studies have shown that vaping is associated with increased risk of developing heart and lung diseases and poses significant threat to brain health, especially in younger users as their brains are still developing. HPB added: 'The presence of etomidate found in e-vaporiser pods seized by authorities reinforces our concerns about the dangers of vaping and the potential presence of other harmful substances that could be present in vape pods, which vape abusers may unknowingly be exposed to.' Used in hospitals for inducing sedation during medical procedures, etomidate is designed to be injected directly into the veins under clinical supervision and never intended to be inhaled.
