Capt. Chowta accuses Karnataka govt. of delaying dedicated jetty project for Lakshadweep
His statement comes after the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways categorised the ₹65-crore project under the 'deemed deferred category', because of the inordinate delay as informed by Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in December last year.
Raising the issue under Rule 377 in the Lok Sabha on Friday, Capt. Chowta said the project was part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's larger vision of port-led development under the Sagarmala scheme, which has brought much-needed attention and investment to India's coastal infrastructure and maritime connectivity.
He said the Lakshadweep jetty project was announced under the Sagarmala Phase I on July 20, 2022. The then BJP government in Karnataka took up the matter on a priority basis, issued tenders in August and December 2022 and January 2023. The contract was awarded on March 29, 2023.
Environmental clearance
Capt. Chowta further said, 'However, since the Congress government came to power in May 2023, the project has seen little to no movement. Its importance has been diluted, and progress stalled.'
He said that he had raised the issue during the Winter Session of 2024 and only after continued follow ups did the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance is granted on February 27 by the Karnataka Coastal Zone Management Authority. Even now, while the project was taken up by the State Expert Appraisal Committee on June 20, the environmental clearance remains pending, and the file continues to be held up in the State system.
Capt. Chowta also highlighted the issue of dredging, which is essential for the jetty's operational success. Though a dredging contract was awarded with seven-year validity, the agency concerned failed to maintain the required draft or carry out timely dredging, leading to recurring problems, especially during monsoons.
He said that he had raised the issue in the recent DISHA meeting, along with MLA for Mangaluru City South D. Vedavyasa Kamath, urging the State government to expedite the works.
Maritime corridor
Seeking intervention of the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways in expediting the work, Capt. Chowta said the project is not just about connectivity - it holds strategic importance for coastal security, for strengthening the Lakshadweep–Mangaluru maritime corridor, and for boosting economic activity in the region.

EC doubles pay for BLOs involved in roll revision
. NEW DELHI: A day after asking its poll personnel in the field to ignore repeated threats and allegations by some opposition netas and continue working impartially, the Election Commission decided to reward the officers involved in electoral roll revision, reports Bharti Jain. For booth-level officers (BLOs), annual remuneration and incentive for roll revision stands doubled to Rs 12,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively. These rates were last revised in 2015. BLOs will also get Rs 6,000 as special incentive for special intensive revision (SIR). The BLO supervisor will receive an annual remuneration of Rs 18,000 as against Rs 12,000, in force since 2015. EROs and assistant EROs, who did not get any honorarium so far, will now receive an honorarium of Rs 30,000 and Rs 25,000 each. Stating that pure electoral rolls are bedrock of democracy, EC Saturday commended the electoral roll machinery comprising EROs, Asst EROs, BLO supervisors and BLOs for doing "a lot or hard work" and playing "a pivotal role in preparation of transparent rolls". NEW DELHI: Four of the total 16 elections held so far to the office of Vice-President of India were won uncontested, three due to rejection of nomination papers of the rival candidates and one due to lack of any opponent. New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday assured public relations officers of the Indian Railways that he would take up their demands, including cadre upgradation, with Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Birla, who attended the All India Railway Public Relations Seminar in Rajasthan's Kota, appreciated the 'significant" role of the cadre in disseminating information related to train services to the common people. 'Public Relations Officers have shared with me their demands regarding cadre upgradation among others, and I will convey them to the railway minister," Birla said. He asserted that the Public Relations Department of the Railways is a 'bridge of trust" between the government and the people. The seminar — organised by the Railway PRO cadre for the first time — deliberated upon the department's current operational practices, responsibilities, and structural challenges. Senior Public Relations Officers, Public Relations Officers and Publicity Inspectors from across the country shared their insights, experiences, and practical suggestions regarding cadre-related concerns. 'This interactive session proved to be a milestone in defining the department's future path, enhancing its efficiency, and laying a strong foundation for cadre restructuring," the Bhartiya Railway Jansampark Karmi Kalyan Samiti, a representative body of the cadre, said in a statement.
