UK, France, 23 countries demand immediate end to Gaza conflict, denounce Israel's ‘inhumane killing' of Palestinians
The countries in a joint statement condemned what they called the 'drip feeding of aid' to Palestinians in Gaza and said it was 'horrifying' that more than 800 civilians had been killed while seeking aid.
The majority of those killed were in the vicinity of Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) sites, which the United States and Israel backed to take over aid distribution in Gaza from a network led by the United Nations.
'The Israeli government's aid delivery model is dangerous, fuels instability and deprives Gazans of human dignity,' the countries' foreign ministers said in a joint statement. 'The suffering of civilians in Gaza has reached new depths.'
The call by about 20 European countries, as well as Canada, Australia and New Zealand, for an end to the war in Gaza and the delivery of aid comes from many countries which are allied with Israel and its most important backer, the United States.
Among those calling for an end to the war are four out of five countries in the so-called Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance, which includes the US
Israel's foreign ministry said the statement was 'disconnected from reality' and it would send the wrong message to Hamas.

'The statement fails to focus the pressure on Hamas and fails to recognise Hamas's role and responsibility for the situation,' the Israeli statement said.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar later said he spoke with his British counterpart David Lammy on Monday on regional issues, including Gaza. He blamed Hamas 'for the suffering of the population and the continuation of the war'.
The US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, called the statement 'disgusting' and said blaming Israel was 'irrational' because Hamas rejects every proposal to end the war.
Israel expands war
The plea from the other Western nations came as Israeli tanks pushed into southern and eastern districts of the Gazan city of Deir al-Balah for the first time on Monday.
Much of Gaza has been reduced to a wasteland during more than 21 months of the war that began when Hamas-led militants stormed into Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages back to Gaza, according to Israeli tallies.
Israel's campaign in Gaza has killed more than 59,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities, with the latest deaths reported on Monday as Israel began a new incursion in central Gaza.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation uses private US security and logistics companies to get supplies into Gaza, largely bypassing the UN-led system that Israel alleges has let Hamas-led militants loot aid shipments intended for civilians. Hamas denies the accusation.

The UN has called the GHF's model unsafe and a breach of humanitarian impartiality standards, which the GHF denies.
The countries behind the statement said Israel was denying essential humanitarian assistance and called on the country to comply with its obligations under international humanitarian law.
They urged Israel to immediately lift restrictions to allow the flow of aid and to enable humanitarian organisations and the United Nations to operate safely and effectively.
They added they were 'prepared to take further action to support an immediate ceasefire and a political pathway to security and peace' for Israelis and Palestinians.
Separately, the British government also set out a £60 million humanitarian aid package for Gaza. — Reuters

JERUSALEM, Aug 2 — Israel's top general has warned that there will be no respite in fighting in Gaza if negotiations fail to quickly secure the release of hostages held in the Palestinian territory. Hamas's 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to a tally based on official figures. Malaysia's stance on Palestine's right to exist remains unchanged
MEMBAKUT: Malaysia has not changed its long-standing position that Palestine has the right to exist as an independent state, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He said this position reflects Malaysia's desire to support the Palestinian people's right to self-governance. Mohamad said this while his ministry studies a declaration from a recent United Nations (UN) special meeting, which calls for Hamas to lay down its arms and surrender governance of Gaza. "The recent debate was presented by two countries, Saudi Arabia and France, which discussed a two-state solution to ensure Palestine has an independent state," Mohamad said. "The outcome document has an appendix with other conditions that must be studied carefully," he said, adding that Malaysia did not want to be "trapped in the political games of interested parties." Mohamad said the Foreign Ministry had been asked to sign the document next month. "The ministry will bring this matter to the cabinet for a decision," he said. "Whether we sign the document or not, it needs to be discussed and scrutinised in greater detail." The foreign minister said this on the sidelines of the Membakut Umno divisional meeting. Earlier today, Mohamad said in a statement that Malaysia welcomed the growing international consensus to condemn Israel and support the push for Palestinian statehood. The declaration calling for Hamas to disarm and relinquish power was signed by several countries, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Kingdom, France, and Canada. The UK and France are among the latest countries preparing to formally recognise the State of Palestine. To date, more than 145 countries have extended formal recognition to Palestine. More than 60,000 Palestinians have been killed, over 150,000 have been injured, and 1.9 million people have been displaced in Gaza since the conflict started in 2023.

Netanyahu says he has nominated Trump for Nobel Peace Prize

'He's forging peace as we speak, in one country, in one region after the other,' Netanyahu said at a dinner with Trump at the White House. Trump has received multiple Nobel Peace Prize nominations from supporters and loyal lawmakers over the years, and has made no secret of his irritation at missing out on the prestigious award. The Republican has complained that he had been overlooked by the Norwegian Nobel Committee for his mediating role in conflicts between India and Pakistan, as well as Serbia and Kosovo. He has also demanded credit for 'keeping peace' between Egypt and Ethiopia and brokering the Abraham Accords, a series of agreements aiming to normalise relations between Israel and several Arab nations. Trump campaigned for office as a 'peacemaker' who would use his negotiating skills to quickly end wars in Ukraine and Gaza, although both conflicts are still raging more than five months into his presidency.
