Actress Monica Dolan ‘immensely proud' of Post Office campaigners

Glasgow Times27-07-2025
Speaking as she appeared as the guest on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, the Mr Bates Vs the Post Office star said she first got the bug for acting at school.
'I just got a feeling from it that I didn't get from anywhere else,' she told presenter Lauren Laverne.
'I think it was basically a feeling of being noticed, or being seen as people now say. I thought, 'I want more of this'.'
Dolan, who won an Olivier award for her role in All About Eve along with a Bafta for Appropriate Adult, received several award nominations for Mr Bates Vs the Post Office.
She told Laverne how she prepared to play the real-life character of subpostmistress Jo Hamilton in the acclaimed ITV drama series based on the true story of Horizon IT scandal.
'I think you have to slightly put yourself in there,' Dolan said.
'You have to think, well if I was this person, how would I behave? I was very lucky with Jo because she was definitely more approachable than most people that I've played.
'One of the things I did very early on actually which was really helpful, which I'd definitely do again, was to ask her – if it wasn't too intrusive, and I felt with her that I could – to ask her to record her life story. Just a little version – like a 15 minute version – up to the point where the script begins – where it all starts.
'That was really useful, waiting for filming – I could listen to her voice, and I'd have her voice in my head, and also I'd have her background in my head.
'That was very useful indeed because you're kind of absorbing that person.'
Dolan also said of those who campaigned for justice following the Post Office scandal: 'I was immensely proud of people, for being that collectively angry.'
The actress, who said her luxury item would be a walk-in wardrobe with a cold glass of champagne and a new outfit for every day inside, said she would also like to take a book on flora and fauna on the island so she could identify what she saw.
Among her desert island disc choices were her childhood favourite The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Banana) from the TV show The Banana Splits, MacArthur Park by Richard Harris, and Us Amazonians by the 'tremendous' Kirsty MacColl.

Eva Price Returns To The Cobbles... And She Won't Be Alone!

ITV have confirmed that Corrie favourite Eva Price is returning to the cobbles this autumn as the landlady of The Rovers Return, and she won't be alone! Catherine Tyldesley is back filming top secret scenes in Weatherfield and she has been joined by two exciting new additions to the cast. Acclaimed actors Aaron McCusker and Pauline McLynn will be arriving alongside Catherine as Eva's partner Ben Driscoll and his interfering mother Maggie. Eva and Ben will be revealed to residents as the new owners of The Rovers Return in October - putting Eva back behind the bar of the nation's favourite pub for the first time since 2018. Eva will be reunited with her sisters Leanne and Toyah, as well as catching up with her old friends and neighbours. But what has she been up to since she left Weatherfield and how will this new clan fit into the drama on the Street? Also joining the cast will be Ben's two sons and Eva's daughter Suzie and it is safe to say the Price/Driscoll family will be arriving with a bang and a suitcase full of secrets. Corrie fans will recognise Pauline as Mrs Doyle in Father Ted and Libby Croker in Shameless. She also appeared in Eastenders as Yvonne Cotton in 2014. Aaron is best known for playing Jamie McGuire in Shameless, he also starred as Jim Hutton, Freddie Mercury's boyfriend, in the 2018 feature film Bohemian Rhapsody. Catherine left Coronation Street in 2018 after seven years on the cobbles. Since waving farewell to Weatherfield she has appeared in dramas such as Viewpoint, Suspicion, Scarborough and most recently The Good Ship Murder. Coronation Street producer Kate Brooks said: 'We are beyond thrilled that Eva is returning as the landlady of the Rovers, with her new blended family in tow. The Driscolls do not arrive quietly, so expect big drama, explosive secrets and raucous knees ups galore. To have actors of Catherine, Aaron and Pauline's considerable calibre at the beating heart of this family is absolutely wonderful, and we can't wait for you to get to know and fall in love with them as much as we have already done. Strap yourselves in, it's going to be an exciting and eventful ride.'

Emmerdale fans 'solve' who Ray was on the phone to - and who he's working with

Emmerdale fans think they know who new villain Ray was speaking with on the phone on Tuesday, and who on the ITV soap he might be working with amid him targeting Dylan Ray in Emmerdale was shown making a cryptic phone call with an accomplice during Tuesday's episode of the ITV soap. Now, some fans are convinced he's working with a familiar face. ‌ Just weeks on from Joe Tate being tipped to be in cahoots with Ray, a mystery scene in the latest episode has sparked more theories. Ray was shown targeting both Dylan Penders and April Windsor, before speaking to someone about their dodgy dealings. ‌ It comes as spoilers revealed April would be the villain's next target, with him already dragging Dylan into his drug dealing. Next week April will be left torn as she's manipulated into a drug drop by Ray, with it not revealed if she goes through with it or not. ‌ On Tuesday night we saw Dylan turning down a job from Ray, who feigned acceptance of this. It was clear he was manipulating the teenager, giving him loads of money and claiming to be his friend. With Dylan not keen to help Ray, he told him he couldn't help him on the latest job and Ray said it was okay. But at the end of the episode we saw him spying on both Dylan and April, before making a worrying comment. ‌ He was speaking to someone on the phone but their identity was not revealed. Ray told the mystery person that April was "sweet and innocent" and would be perfect for whatever they had planned. He claimed she would be "of use to them", no doubt with their dodgy dealings and jobs like the ones Dylan has been doing. But who was Ray speaking with, and who is he working with? Viewers had a theory or two about this, believing we already know the person on the other end of the phone. Some fans have gone back to the Joe theory, believing they are working together. ‌ Another theory speculated that fellow newcomer Celia might be linked to Ray. One theory said: "Anyone else curious as to who Ray was on the phone with? I reckon it's someone we know like Joe." Another post echoed this theory saying: "Is Ray working with Joe?" Meanwhile another fan commented: "Imagine if Ray was working with Celia." It comes amid Celia teaming up with Moira Dingle after both of them had drama with the Tates. Celia had a farm related business offer amid Moira's financial woes, while Celia revealed Kim Tate had raised her rent. Fans wondered if Celia was really helping Moira or if she was secretly against her. Coronation Street first look as Eva Price returns alongside sitcom legend

Coronation Street bosses have confirmed that actress Catherine Tyldesley will be reprising her role as Eva Price on the ITV soap, but she is not coming back on her own Coronation Street bosses have confirmed that Catherine Tyldesley will be reprising her role as Eva Price on the ITV soap. The actress, 41, left the cobbles in 2018 but is making a comeback which will see her take on the coveted position of Rovers Return landlady. ‌ Eva left the Street with daughter Susie, who at the time was four months old. But when she heads back to Weatherfield later this year, she arrives with new partner Ben Driscoll, played by Aaron McCusker, who is best known for his role as Jamie Maguire in Shameless and also starred in Bohemian Rhapsody as Freddie Mercury's boyfriend. ‌ It comes as reports emerged that the new owner of The Rovers had been revealed amid her return. Now the soap has confirmed the theory by fans, announcing Eva will be back in the pub once owned by her mother. ‌ What's more, Pauline McLynn, who made her name as Mrs Doyle in the classic sitcom Father Ted, has signed on to her interfering mother-in-law Maggie Driscoll and will be seen alongside Eva and Ben when they take over the nation's most famous pub in October. With them will be Susie and Ben's two sons. Former Emmerdale boss Kate Brooks, who took the reins of Coronation Street earlier this year, said: "We are beyond thrilled that Eva is returning as the landlady of the Rovers, with her new blended family in tow. The Driscolls do not arrive quietly, so expect big drama, explosive secrets and raucous knees ups galore. ‌ "To have actors of Catherine, Aaron and Pauline's considerable calibre at the beating heart of this family is absolutely wonderful, and we can't wait for you to get to know and fall in love with them as much as we have already done. Strap yourselves in, it's going to be an exciting and eventful ride.' Reports surrounding the return of Leanne Battersby's sister emerged earlier this year, but then nothing was announced until now. It's thought that the move has come about after EastEnders bosses revealed that Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) and Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) will be taking over the Queen Victoria pub on Coronation Street's BBC rival. ‌ A source told The Sun: "Corrie bosses were never going to take EastEnders shrewd decision to reinstate Kat and Alfie at the Vic lying down. So they took their time looking for the perfect actor to play her husband to Eva as she makes her return to Corrie as the new boss of the Rovers." The insider added that Corrie bosses knew they had found the 'perfect' actor as soon as the Irish-born star walked into the room. They added of his character: "Aaron's character is also someone not to be messed with, and the locals are going to be in for a shock if they think they can take advantage of his good nature and that cheeky Irish charm. "It's the start of an exciting new chapter in the pub's history." Following her time on the cobbles, Catherine competed on Strictly Come Dancing. She has also starred in The Good Ship Murder and earlier this year appeared opposite Siobhan Finneran in an episode of the ITV drama Protection. She was also set to star Bonnie and Clyde: The Musical last year but it was cancelled and she went viral over a social media scandal known as Cakegate in late 2023.
