Gurgaon tennis player Radhika Yadav, who dreamt of playing Wimbledon, shot dead by father in family dispute

Time of India12-07-2025
Radhika Yadav
, a 25-year-old former tennis player and coach, was shot dead on Thursday by her father, Deepak Yadav, at their residence in Sector 57, Gurgaon. The tragic incident has left the local sports community in shock. At the time of the shooting, her mother was present in the house. Her uncle,
Kuldeep Yadav
, who lives on the ground floor of the same building, rushed upstairs after hearing a loud bang. Upon reaching the first floor, he found Radhika lying in a pool of blood. Kuldeep and his son took her to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Later, he filed the First Information Report (FIR) with the police.
Early passion for tennis
Radhika began playing tennis in Class 3 and pursued the sport with determination. "She wanted to make it big in the game. It was her dream to play
Wimbledon
one day," said Dr Manoj DM, a physiotherapist who worked with her through her playing years. She attended
Scottish High International School
and chose not to pursue college in order to focus on her tennis career.
Despite her efforts, Radhika did not achieve consistent success at the international level. According to the International Tennis Federation (ITF), she held a career-high singles ranking of 1999.
Challenges and shift to coaching
After the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Radhika shifted her focus to coaching while continuing to play in national and ITF events. Dr Manoj noted that she was dealing with minor injuries and physical discomforts, which may have contributed to her stepping back from full-time competition. 'She was a good player who was passionate about tennis and would keep pushing boundaries, despite injuries and physical pains,' he said. He also recalled her perseverance during a painful shoulder cyst eight years ago, which she recovered from to continue playing.
She coached at multiple local academies, including one near her home and another at the Magnolias, where she had started working about a month ago. A fellow coach remembered her as a naturally talented player and a well-liked trainer. 'I saw her play since she was 9-10 years old. Years later, I connected with her at Magnolias. Everyone who took training under her liked her,' he said.
Live Events
Creative interests and public reaction
In addition to her sporting career, Radhika appeared in a music video titled
Karwaan
in 2023 alongside television actor and singer Inaam Ul Haq. The video, released in June last year, has over 20,000 views on YouTube.
Inaam expressed his condolences in a
social media
post, writing that he was "shocked to know" about her death. He clarified that their professional interaction was limited to that single project and requested privacy, stating, 'Leave me and my family alone.'
Investigation and allegations
According to those familiar with the family, a dispute related to a tennis academy near their residence may have triggered the confrontation that led to her death. Dr Manoj, who had known Radhika since she was 14, said he was aghast to learn that her father was the one who shot her. 'I saw her grow from a teenager to a motivated young woman and it deeply saddens me to see such a brilliant life cut short like this,' he said.

Deputy CEO of Shani Shingnapur Temple Trust found dead amid corruption probe

Amid an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the Shani Shingnapur temple in Maharashtra's Ahilyanagar district, the deputy chief executive officer of the temple trust was found dead at his residence on Monday morning. The police said the Deputy CEO, Nitin Shete, 43, allegedly died by suicide, though the cause of death is yet to be officially confirmed. According to officials, Shete was found dead in his room at his home in Shete Vasti, a locality in Shani Shingnapur village. The incident came to light when his family failed to get a response from him despite repeated knocks on his door. Neighbours helped the family force open the door, where they found Shete unresponsive. He was taken to a nearby hospital and declared dead on arrival. An officer from the local police station said, 'An accidental death case has been registered. The exact cause will be known after the post-mortem report is received. We are also looking into whether the death is in any way connected to the ongoing investigation against the temple trust.' Shete, a former trustee, was currently serving as the Deputy CEO of the Shri Shaneshwar Devasthan Trust, which oversees the administration of the temple dedicated to Lord Shani. A senior police officer said they registered a First Information Report (FIR) in connection with the alleged Shani Shingnapur Temple Trust scam three weeks ago, but Shete was not summoned to record his statement. Earlier this month, during the ongoing monsoon session of the state legislature, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly of a massive scam involving the trust. A report submitted by the charity commissioner flagged widespread irregularities, including the presence of over 2,400 ghost employees, inflated payrolls, and fraudulent donation apps used to siphon funds into private accounts. Departments, including the trust hospital, bhakt niwas, parking, and sanitation, were reportedly affected, with large discrepancies between official employee figures and those physically verified on site. The chief minister had stated that the trustees would be booked under criminal charges and that external agencies would be roped in for a comprehensive audit. He also said that the assets of those involved would be scrutinised. The issue was raised in the Assembly by MLA Vithhal Langhe and supported by MLA Suresh Dhas. Fadnavis assured the House that no one involved in the alleged wrongdoing would be spared.

Dharmasthala secret burials: SIT accompanies whistleblower for inspection near temple town

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to probe the alleged secret burials at Dharmasthala Monday took the whistleblower to locations around the Karnataka temple town where the bodies are said to have been buried. The team conducted a spot mahazar (inspection) of the location where the whistleblower had dug up a skull, which he had handed over to investigating authorities while filing a complaint earlier this month. This was apart from marking other spots around Snana Ghatta (bathing ghat), located on the banks of River Netravati, where the bodies were allegedly buried by him, according to sources. The mahazar took place amid heavy police presence as personnel from Dharmasthala and Belthangady police stations, and the Karnataka State Reserve Police were deployed around the spot. The process took place after SIT officials questioned the whistleblower for two consecutive days – Saturday and Sunday – regarding the allegations made by him. During the mahazar process, the complainant's face was concealed with a mask to protect his identity. Earlier this month, the whistleblower – a former sanitation worker employed at Dharmasthala – filed a police complaint saying he was forced to bury several bodies and was threatened against approaching the police. The complainant had said that he was suffering from 'guilty consciousness' and that many of the bodies he had buried were of women with signs of sexual assault. The Dharmasthala police filed a First Information Report (FIR) on July 4 based on the complaint filed by the whistleblower. On July 19, succumbing to pressure from various organisations and activists, the Karnataka government formed an SIT to probe the sensational allegations levelled by the whistleblower. Last week, the SIT set up an office at the Belthangady police station. Officials from SIT had also visited the Dharmasthala police station to collect relevant documents pertaining to the case.
