101 buses carry JDT fans to Bukit Jalil for Malaysia Cup final

JOHOR BARU: In a spirited show of support, 101 buses filled with Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) fans have hit the road to the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, to cheer on their team in the Malaysia Cup final tonight.
JDT Football Supporters Club (KPBJDT) deputy president Mohd Fadzli Sapie said 15 buses departed from the Tan Sri Dato' Haji Hassan Yunos Stadium in Larkin, while the rest departed from various districts.
He said the group was joined by other supporter clubs, including Boys Of Straits (BOS), which provided nearly 80 buses.
"Alhamdulillah, the weather is good this morning. All the fans are in high spirits heading to Bukit Jalil.
"We will meet up with other buses that have also started moving, including those from Segamat, Pontian, Kulai, and Ayer Hitam.
"Although ticket sales were somewhat sluggish this time, the enthusiasm among supporters to watch the Malaysia Cup final at the stadium is still beyond expectations," he said when met at Larkin Stadium today.
Tonight, JDT will face Sri Pahang FC as they aim to defend the Malaysia Cup, which they have won for two consecutive years in 2022 and 2023.
JDT also previously brought home the prestigious trophy to Johor in 2017 and 2019.
Mohd Fadzli said that, based on ticket sales, about 30,000 supporters are expected to be at the Bukit Jalil stadium tonight to cheer on the football club.
Also making the trip are around 100 JDT supporters from Singapore, who will be travelling from Plaza Larkin.

Young Tigers to unleash 'Nafuzi Ball' at Asean Championship

KUALA LUMPUR: National youth coach Nafuzi Zain is banking on his trademark attacking style, dubbed "Nafuzi Ball", to inspire his Under-23 squad at the Asean Championship in Jakarta on July 15-28. The 47-year-old, renowned for transforming Terengganu into one of the Super League's most exciting sides from 2019 to 2022, is now aiming to apply the same philosophy on the international stage. With three warm-up matches completed — two wins (1-0 against Police and 4-1 against Melaka FC) and one defeat (1-0 to Negri Sembilan) — Nafuzi says performance, not results, remains his focus. "We're still in a building phase. It's not about results but how we play," he said. "There's been day-by-day improvement, especially in the players' ability to execute my style. I'm happy with their commitment." "Nafuzi Ball" — characterised by fluid passing, aggressive pressing and attacking intelligence — powered Terengganu to back-to-back Malaysia Cup semi-finals and a Super League runners-up finish in 2021, often outclassing richer clubs. The style followed him to Kedah Darul Aman in 2023, where he helped stabilise performances and again implemented his tactical identity. Now at the helm of the national Under-23 side, Nafuzi is introducing the same principles, albeit with tweaks. "This is my philosophy, my style. But of course, adjustments are needed — these are young players and we've had limited time," he said. "They're responding well and absorbing the ideas. That's the essence of 'Nafuzi Ball' — understanding and expressing our identity on the pitch." For Malaysia's Group A opener against the Philippines on July 15, Nafuzi hinted his first XI is taking shape following tactical experimentation in the friendlies. Trainees Fakrul Haikal and G. Pavitran are sidelined with injuries, but the rest of the squad are fit, and more importantly, eager. "Our most recent friendly ended without injuries, and that's crucial. We're managing their load and balancing fitness with preparation," he added. The Young Tigers are already drawing attention, with captain Ubaidullah Shamsul Fazili and forward Haqimi Azim Rosli listed by tournament organisers as "players to watch". "They've both played in the Super League and been called up to the senior national team — that experience gives them an edge," said Nafuzi. Leadership duties will likely fall to Ubaidullah or midfielder Aysar Hadi Shapri, but the coach is keeping his options open. "They've shown leadership before and naturally stand out, but I'm also watching to see who steps up under pressure," he said. This will be Nafuzi's first international outing with the national youth side. The other teams in Group A are hosts Indonesia and Brunei. Only the group winners and the best runner-up from three groups will reach the semi-finals. The team will depart for Jakarta on Sunday.

FAM credits JDT for strengthening Harimau Malaya

KUALA LUMPUR: The wealth of talent in the Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) team has been a blessing for Harimau Malaya on the international stage. JDT's pool of talented local and naturalised players has helped raise the standards of Harimau Malaya, contributing to the team's climb of six spots to No. 125 in the latest FIFA world rankings. FA of Malaysia (FAM) deputy president Datuk Yusoff Mahadi said this also benefits Harimau Malaya coach Peter Cklamovski when it comes to closely monitoring the performances of the national players, a majority of whom represent JDT. "The presence of JDT players only strengthens the national squad," he told reporters at the FAM-Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad strategic cooperation signing ceremony on Friday. JDT, who have won the Super League 11 consecutive times, recently signed four new heritage players — midfielder Nacho Mendez, striker Joao Figueiredo, defender Jon Irazabal and midfielder Hector Hevel — for the 2025-2026 M-League season. Figueiredo, Irazabal and Hevel were in the squad when Harimau Malaya thrashed Vietnam 4-0 in Bukit Jalil in last month's Asian Cup qualifier. Asked whether JDT's overwhelming depth created an unfair advantage over other M-League clubs, Yusoff acknowledged the disparity. "Yes, they are far ahead domestically. But JDT are competing at the highest level — the Asian Champions League Elite — and are aiming for the Club World Cup. "They had to recruit accordingly," he said. "From the national team's perspective, we must take full advantage. JDT's preparation is clearly top-notch, and having so many talented, skilful players in one club gives us a solid platform to build a strong Harimau Malaya."

JDT talent boosts Harimau Malaya performance, says FAM

KUALA LUMPUR: The depth of talent within Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) has proven invaluable for the national men's football team, Harimau Malaya, according to Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) deputy president Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mahadi. The club's mix of local, naturalised, and heritage players has elevated the national squad's performance, helping Malaysia climb six places to 125th in the latest FIFA rankings. Mohd Yusoff noted that JDT's dominance in the Super League, with 11 consecutive titles, provides Harimau Malaya head coach Peter Cklamovski an advantage in assessing players, as most national team members are from the Southern Tigers. 'The presence of JDT players only strengthens the national squad,' he said during the FAM-Bank Islam Malaysia strategic partnership signing ceremony. JDT recently bolstered their squad with four new heritage signings: midfielder Nacho Mendez, striker Joao Figueiredo, defender Jon Irazabal, and midfielder Hector Hevel. However, only Figueiredo, Irazabal, and Hevel have represented Harimau Malaya so far, featuring in the 4-0 victory over Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers last month. When asked if JDT's dominance creates an imbalance in the M-League, Mohd Yusoff acknowledged the gap but justified it by pointing to the club's ambitions in high-level competitions like the AFC Champions League Elite and FIFA Club World Cup. 'JDT's preparations are definitely right on track, and we must leverage this to strengthen the national team,' he added. - Bernama
