Tour de France Femmes: Mavi Garcia holds on to win stage two as Le Court moves into yellow jersey

New York Times8 hours ago
Liv AlUla Jayco's Mavi Garcia — the oldest rider in the race — won the second stage of the Tour de France Femmes on Sunday, with Kim le Court moving into the yellow jersey.
Garcia, 41, opened up a ten-second gap on the rest of the riders only nine kilometres from the finish and managed to hold on over the final climb as the general classification favourites chased her down.

Lorena Wiebes (Team SD Worx-Protime) came in second and Kim le Court (AG Insurance-Soudal) finished in third, enough to take the yellow jersey — for the fastest overall time so far — from Marianne Vos (Team Visma Lease-A-Bike).
Sunday's results didn't change the other classifications as Vos held on to the green jersey for the points classification while Elise Chabbey (FDJ-Suez) kept the polka dot jersey for the mountains classification and Julie Bego (Cofidis) kept the white jersey for the youth classification.
The second stage of the women's Tour was another hilly route, spanning 110km between Brest and Quimper. A breakaway formed early on in the stage but was caught by the peloton with 12km to go.
Dutch sprinter Charlotte Kool (Picnic PostNL) withdrew from the Tour ahead of Sunday's stage after her body did not react well in following a crash in the Baloise Ladies Tour around a week ago.
Stage three on Monday will be a flat stage, favouring the pure sprinters, and will take the race from La Gacilly to Angers.

Tim Weah's agent puts Juventus on blast for holding up Marseille transfer

U.S. men's national team winger Tim Weah remains stuck in a transfer window standoff between Juventus and French club Olympique de Marseille – and the frustration seems to be mounting from the player's side. Weah previously turned down a transfer to English Premier League side Nottingham Forest after Juventus came to terms. Instead, the 25-year-old has made it clear his preference is to move back to Ligue 1, where he previously played for Paris Saint-Germain and Lille. Advertisement So far, however, the teams have not come to an agreement. Multiple reports indicate Marseille will not increase its offer beyond €15 million ($17.6 million), while Juventus is insisting on its €20 million ($23.5 million) valuation. Weah's agent, Badou Sambague, expressed his frustration in a statement to The Athletic. 'Juve is a fantastic club,' Sambague wrote. 'The sporting department is managed by three persons. Two have class, and another is still searching himself [sic]. We cannot blame him. Two are looking for solutions, and one is creating problems. And we can't let that go. Tim Weah, is always professional, was left out during the [Club] World Cup. This person botched his [Club] World Cup, tried to force him to go where he wanted. Today, as revenge, he's demanding a fortune and waiting for a Premier League offer that won't come and will never be approved by us. 'These are old-fashioned methods that won't sit well with me. I'm not used to speaking out, but not doing so today would be accepting the unacceptable and total disrespect. Class can't be bought for a manager, that's for sure, but it has always been part of the history of Juventus. One person is undermining that. Let's see…' Weah played just 45 minutes for Juventus during the FIFA Club World Cup this summer. Increasing that frustration is that he missed the Concacaf Gold Cup with the U.S. team in order to stay with Juve for the club competition. At issue from the player's side is the belief that Juventus general manager Damien Comolli initially accepted a €14 million offer ($16.5 million), but now is insisting on the €20 million figure. Weah is keen on the opportunity to play for OM manager Roberto De Zerbi, and Marseille has qualified for the Champions League. Weah has three years remaining on his contract with Juventus. The Athletic has approached Juventus for comment.

Tour de France results: Race outlook after Kaden Groves wins Stage 20

Australian Kaden Groves skillfully navigated a slippery route that resulted in a crash and demonstrated he was more than just a sprinter by winning the 182.4 km from Nantua to Pontarlier Stage 20 of the Tour de France. Originally part of a 13-man breakaway, Groves gained momentum and took the solo lead in the final stretch of Stage 20, ultimately claiming victory over Frank van den Broek and Pascal Eenkhoorn. As Groves inched closer to the finish line, he burst into tears, glancing over his shoulder to ensure he was in the clear before raising his hands in celebration as he crossed the line. Naomi Osaka splits with coach Patrick Mouratoglou as tennis hard-court swing begins

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has split with coach Patrick Mouratoglou after just shy of a year together. Osaka confirmed the split on social media ahead of the WTA 1,000 Canadian Open in Montreal, as the tennis shift to hard courts, where she is most comfortable, kicks into gear. 'Merci Patrick. It was such a great experience learning from you. Wishing you nothing but the best. You are one of the coolest people I've ever met and I'm sure I'll see you around,' she wrote in a statement. Mouratoglou did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Osaka, 27, started working with Mouratoglou, who most famously coached Serena Williams, following the 2024 U.S. Open. Their time together has been an up-and-down sequence of promising signs and frustrations with either injury or close-run defeats for Osaka, who said that Mouratoglou would be left wondering 'what the f— this is ' after a tight first-round loss to Paula Badosa at this year's French Open. Ahead of that tournament, Osaka played a second-tier tournament in Saint Malo, France, after an early loss at the Italian Open in Rome. She won the WTA 125 event in France. reflecting afterward how missing matches due to physical issues — and three frustrating retirements with injury during promising contests in Beijing, Auckland and Melbourne in late 2024 and early 2025 — had left her lacking reps in tight moments. But at the French Open against Badosa, and then at Wimbledon against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Osaka went through the kind of encouraging but ultimately dispiriting match that has marked much of her time with Mouratoglou. Prior to a 6-4, 6-2 defeat to Emma Raducanu at the D.C. Open that proved to be their last match together, six of Osaka's last seven matches had come in three sets, with all of the deciders ending 6-4 against or in a tiebreak. Following the defeat to Pavlyuchenkova, Osaka said that her response to it was entirely removed from her emotions in Paris, where she had to briefly leave the interview room in tears. 'In Paris, I was very emotional. Now I don't feel anything, so I guess I'd prefer to feel nothing than everything,' she said in London. Osaka, who is currently world No. 51, will play Canadian qualifier Ariana Arseneault Monday in her first match at the Canadian Open. This article originally appeared in The Athletic.
