Georgetown Prep wins IAC hockey tournament; Spalding splits a wrestling title

Washington Post18-02-2025
This hockey season was supposed to be a fall from grace for Georgetown Prep. The program lost its top contributors from last year, trudged through a five-game regular season losing streak and entered the Interstate Athletic Conference tournament as the No. 4 seed.
Most teams would have quit during the season, senior captain Timmy Overcash told his team. But the Hoyas stayed the course, and in three games last week they shocked their conference. Prep dominated St. Stephen's/St. Agnes in the play-in game, knocked off top-seeded Landon in the semifinals and shut out Bullis in the IAC championship.

Nation's No. 4 Recruit Commits to Historic College Football Program

Nation's No. 4 Recruit Commits to Historic College Football Program originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The top talent in the 2026 recruiting class continues to make their decisions on where they will be taking their talents to start their collegiate careers, which includes offensive tackle Immanuel Iheanacho. Advertisement It was a heated battle to see which program would land his services, as he was deciding between the Oregon Ducks, the LSU Tigers, the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Auburn Tigers, all of whom he'd had official visits with. Of course, only one could come out on top, and on Thursday, Iheanacho announced his commitment to Oregon, per On3's Hayes Fawcett, where he will play under head coach Dan Lanning. This gives the Ducks a huge reason to celebrate, as On3 Industry Rankings had Iheanacho as a five-star recruit, the No.2 offensive tackle, the No. 2 player in Maryland and the No. 4 player in the nation. Advertisement During the 2024 season with Georgetown Prep, he was named a MaxPreps Junior All-American after not allowing a single sack the entire year, and at 6-foot-7 and 380 pounds, he's proven to be an impressive force on the field. Iheanacho also becomes the third offensive lineman that Oregon has landed in this year's cycle, joining four-star Tommy Tofi and three-star Koloi Kelo. Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning received a commitment from offensive tackle Immanuel Goddin-Imagn Images As a whole, Lanning has produced an extremely impressive 2026 recruiting class, now holding a total of 13 commitments, ranking No. 3 in the Big Ten and No. 8 in the nation. Oregon may not be done yet either, as the On3 recruiting prediction machine gives them the best chance to land four-star athlete Jalen Lott (63.6%), four-star cornerback Davon Benjamin (94%) and three-star safety Jaxon Toala (46.1%). Sam Presti: Thunder GM reveals Summer League plan for Thomas Sorber

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Thomas Sorber will miss the NBA Summer League due to ongoing rehabilitation from a foot injury, vice president Sam Presti said on Monday. Sorber was an All-Big East third-team selection last season as a freshman at Georgetown, averaging 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.5 steals on 53.2% shooting from the field. He became the first Hoya since Markel Starks (2012-13) to earn all-conference third-team recognition. The 15th pick was limited during the predraft process after undergoing surgery in February for a turf toe injury that limited him to 24 games with the Hoyas. He is still working to regain full health and will require additional time to recover. "Sorber will not play in summer league," Presti said. "He is still in the return-to-performance phase, and the draft process doesn't really allow for great progress in that because he is traveling all over the place." Sorber was highly touted out of Georgetown after establishing himself as a dominant threat in the paint, either as a roller or back-to-the-basket scorer. He was also among the freshmen leaders in defensive win shares and wins above replacement. The 6-foot-10 center was on the Thunder's radar after impressing Presti in a practice early last season. His maturity struck Presti as an incoming freshman, and how detailed and focused he was during those on-court sessions with the Hoyas. Sorber is looking forward to the challenge of joining the newly-crowned champions and to learn from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and the rest of the team. He is ready to get to work with them. "I would say just having the mentality to come in and try to do what those guys do," Sorber said on Saturday. "Just come in, play hard and give all that I have and try to catch up with those guys and see what I can learn from the older guys."

Clemson set to play home-and-home series against Big East basketball brand: report

The Clemson Tigers are reportedly set to begin a home-and-home series with one of the most well-known college basketball programs in the Big East. College hoops analyst Rocco Miller reported Monday that the Tigers will face the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Capital One Arena in Washington, DC. The Hoyas will play at Clemson's Littlejohn Coliseum in 2026-27, per the report. Georgetown plays its home games at Capital One Arena, the same venue that hosts the NBA's Washington Wizards and NHL's Washington Capitals. Clemson played one game there in the 2024 ACC Tournament where they fell to Boston College. The Tigers and Hoyas have met only one other time in the schools' history: at the Rainbow Classic tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii in 2004. Coach John Thompson's team defeated the Tigers, 75-60, on Dec. 23. Clemson finished the 2024-25 season with a program-record 27 wins and 18 ACC victories. Coach Brad Brownell's Tigers were a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament and fell to McNeese State in a first-round upset on March 20 in Providence, Rhode Island. Clemson finished 27-7 overall and was ranked No. 22 in the final AP Top 25 poll. Georgetown is coming off an 18-16 season. The Hoyas went 8-12 in Big East play in coach Ed Cooley's second season. Clemson basketball 2025-26 schedule Clemson recently learned its opponent for the 2025 ACC/SEC Challenge. For the second time in three years, the Tigers will head to Tuscaloosa to face the Alabama Crimson Tide at Coleman Coliseum. An exact date and start time were not announced. Last season, Clemson upset No. 4 Kentucky, 70-66, in the ACC/SEC Challenge on Dec. 3 at Littlejohn Coliseum. The Tigers will also head to Madison Square Garden to play in this year's Jimmy V Classic. They'll face the Brigham Young Cougars on Dec. 9 at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. Clemson and BYU have both made the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two seasons. Also on the nonconference schedule is the annual Shriners Children's Charleston Classic in South Carolina. Clemson will join Georgia, Xavier and West Virginia in the first bracket. Boston College, Davidson, Tulane and Utah State will be in a separate bracket at the tournament. Clemson's annual rivalry game against South Carolina is scheduled to return to Littlejohn Coliseum this year. The teams have not announced an official date.
