PUCM strengthens Malaysia-China ties through trade, technology and cultural exchange
Speaking at PUCM's 10th anniversary celebration today, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching praised the association's decade-long efforts in forging lasting connections across key sectors such as technology, telecommunications, culture and education.
'Beyond trade and investment, people-to-people ties between our nations continue to deepen. With Visit Malaysia Year 2026 on the horizon, we look forward to welcoming even more tourists from China and around the world,' she said.
Teo highlighted that tourist arrivals from China soared to 3.7 million in 2024, marking a remarkable 130.9 per cent year-on-year increase.
'This initiative marks a new chapter in Malaysia-China relations, reinforcing our connectivity in trade, tourism, education and cultural diplomacy. It arrives at a crucial moment as Malaysia chairs ASEAN in 2025, where inclusivity and sustainability will shape the regional agenda.
'Greater ease of movement for businesses, entrepreneurs, students and tourists will not only strengthen bilateral ties but also enhance ASEAN's position as a vibrant, people-centred and future-ready region,' she said during the anniversary luncheon held at a hotel here today.
Teo also reaffirmed the Communications Ministry's commitment to nurturing a supportive ecosystem for foreign and local investors in the digital and telecommunications sectors.
'We continue to review and streamline regulatory frameworks, while formulating policies that encourage a dynamic, secure and inclusive digital economy for all,' she said, encouraging PUCM and its partners to pursue joint ventures, technology exchange and investments that benefit both nations.
She also noted that the theme for the 2025 China Smart Industry Trade Exhibition (2025 CSITE), Smart Technology, Digitalisation and Education, fully aligns with the priorities of the MADANI Economy and Malaysia's drive for digital inclusivity, cybersecurity and innovation-led growth.
Meanwhile, PUCM president Datuk Keith Li reflected on the association's growth from just seven founding members to nearly 200 member companies over the past decade.
'Among our proudest achievements is the establishment of the 2025 CSITE, which spotlighted breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, drone technology and smart city solutions.
'This initiative serves as a vital bridge, linking Chinese innovation with Malaysian opportunities,' he said.
The event also saw the unveiling of PUCM's 10th Anniversary Special Edition Magazine.
Earlier, Teo officiated the launch of the 2025 CSITE and spent about 30 minutes visiting exhibition booths, including those by China Telecom (M) Sdn Bhd, China Silk Road Group and Geespace.
She also visited the booths of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), Malaysia-China Insight and Nanjing Xinyan Cultural Media Co, Ltd.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A federal leader's disdain for the proposed 'Borneo Bloc' political cooperation led Gabungan Rakyat Sabah into supporting Anwar Ibrahim's formation of the unity government after the 2022 general election, GRS chairman Hajiji Noor said today. Speaking at the annual convention of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, he said a former federal leader, whom he did not name, had dismissed the idea of Bornean cooperation. 'I was with Masidi Manjun and Jeffrey Kitingan in a meeting with a big leader over there (in Peninsular Malaysia) at the time. The person said they were the masters. He did not like the Borneo Bloc. He did not want us to share our experiences and stories with our neighbouring state of Sarawak,' he said. 'I was shocked by his words. I thought about them for a long time. What did they mean? What was his intent? As I thought about it, I lost heart (tawar hati) in these people,' he said in a video of his speech published on Facebook by Sabah Media. Hajiji said it was after much thought that he finally decided that GRS would support the unity government being formed by Anwar. Since then, he said Anwar's government 'has listened to our voices, and we have been treated well', and reiterated that GRS remained in support of the prime minister. Hajiji said many of Sabah's demands under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 were approved by Anwar, as opposed to previous leaders who found difficulty in devolving power to the state. 'So what are we hoping for? If the unity government is good for our state, why shouldn't we support it?' he said. In March, deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said the unity government had successfully resolved nine key claims related to MA63, including power to regulate gas supply in Sabah, the administration of the judiciary in Sabah and Sarawak, and guidelines on land reserved for federal purposes in the two states.

Nurul Izzah Calls On Bangladesh Interim Government Chief
WORLD By Shakir Husain NEW DELHI, July 27 (Bernama) -- Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar called on Bangladesh interim leader Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka on Sunday. Yunus, during the meeting, sought Malaysia's support for Bangladesh to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). "We want to become a part of ASEAN, and we will need your support," he told Nurul Izzah, according to a Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha report. Bangladesh applied to become an ASEAN sectoral dialogue partner in 2020. Yunus also invited Malaysian companies to invest in Bangladesh's growing economy. "Asia is ageing rapidly, but Bangladesh has a lot of young people. Half of our population is under the age of 27. Set up your industries here and export from Bangladesh. It will help both our economies," he said. The interim government's chief advisor informed the PKR deputy chief about Bangladesh's political reforms following last year's uprising, which ended Sheikh Hasina's nearly 16-year rule.
