New bridge linking Pulau Tuba and Pulau Dayang Bunting in procurement phase
ALOR SETAR: The proposed bridge connecting Pulau Tuba and Pulau Dayang Bunting in Langkawi has entered the procurement stage, with the letter of acceptance expected by mid-2026. Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan confirmed the development, highlighting the project's significance for local communities. The federal initiative, approved under the 12th Malaysia Plan Rolling Plan 3, aims to replace the existing narrow one-lane bridge, which currently allows only a single four-wheel drive vehicle at a time. The new structure will span Selat Bagan Nyior, enhancing mobility and access regardless of weather conditions. 'The bridge will be 1.04 kilometres long, comprising a 0.38 km bridge and a 0.66 km road, designed to Public Works Department R1 specifications with two lanes,' said Ahmad Maslan. He emphasised its role in boosting socioeconomic development and improving living standards for residents. During a site visit, the minister urged all stakeholders, including contractors and project teams, to collaborate closely to ensure timely and cost-effective completion. - Bernama

Ringgit rebounds slightly as market anticipates mild US tariffs
KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 — The ringgit ended marginally higher against the US dollar yesterday, buoyed by growing expectations of a possible compromise on upcoming US tariff measures. At 6pm, the local note appreciated to 4.2180/2260 against the greenback from Wednesday's close of 4.2195/2255. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the modest rebound was partly driven by optimism that Washington may settle on a softer set of tariffs as it nears the finalisation of tariffs for selected countries. 'There is speculation that the finalised tariffs could be less severe than the initial proposals announced in early April, which has helped ease some market concerns. 'The ringgit was weaker earlier in the session, slipping to 4.2383, but later recovered to as high as 4.2175 during yesterday's session,' he told Bernama. Nonetheless, Mohd Afzanizam noted that overall sentiment remained cautious, with investors staying on the sidelines as they await greater clarity on trade policy directions and their broader implications. At the close, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the euro to 4.9675/9770 from 4.9756/9827, appreciated against the Japanese yen to 2.9225/9282 from 2.9333/9376, and advanced versus the British pound to 5.7601/7710 from 5.7621/7703 yesterday. The local note traded mixed against its Asean counterparts. It improved vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3114/3182 from 3.3146/3196, and rose against the Philippine peso to 7.47/7.49 from 7.50/7.51. However, it slipped against the Thai baht to 13.0302/0609 from 13.0211/0457, and shed against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.6/261.2 from 260.5/261.0 previously. — Bernama

SST revision does not justify hotel rate hikes, says Finance Ministry
MoF clarifies that the SST revisions do not include any change in the service tax applied to hotel accommodation or F&B served at hotels. – Pixabay photo KUALA LUMPUR (July 4): The Ministry of Finance (MoF) indicated that the Sales and Service Tax (SST) does not warrant the hotel room rate increases asserted by some hotel associations. The ministry clarified that the SST revisions effective July 1 do not include any change in the service tax applied to hotel accommodation or food and beverages (F&B) served at hotels. 'The SST revisions do not affect basic daily goods but may affect hotels indirectly through the expansion of service tax to cover rental on commercial properties and also sales tax on selected food items such as premium seafood and imported fruits. 'However, these indirect impacts are unlikely to translate to a 10 per cent to 15 per cent increase in costs faced by hotels,' MoF told Bernama when asked about a possible hike in hotel rates due to the extended SST. The ministry was responding to claims by hotels that they would need to raise room prices by 10 to 15 per cent following the revised tax structure. The MoF added that if hotels proceed to raise rates on the pretext of the SST, the government, through the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), will examine the matter to prevent unreasonable price increases. 'If there are hotels that do raise rates by 15 per cent on the pretext of SST, the government, through KPDN, will review the impact of SST on these hotels to ensure there is no element of profiteering,' it said. – Bernama F&B hotels kpdn lead MoF SST
