The Houston Astros lost Ryan Pressly, Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman in the offseason, but it hasn't stopped them from placing themselves at the top of the American League standings.
Ahead of the trade deadline, the Astros are going to need to add a starting pitcher in order to keep themselves among the AL's best down the dog days of the season. There are plenty of options on the board for Houston to pursue in the coming weeks.
Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly recently suggested the Astros could be a landing spot in a huge trade for Kansas City Royals ace Seth Lugo in the coming weeks.
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - JULY 03: Seth Lugo #67 of the Kansas City Royals throws a pitch during the first inning against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on July 03, 2025 in Seattle, Washington.
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - JULY 03: Seth Lugo #67 of the Kansas City Royals throws a pitch during the first inning against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on July 03, 2025 in Seattle, Washington."With Framber Valdez set to become a free agent after the season, the Astros would probably be best served acquiring a controllable starter who's sure to be with them in 2026," Kelly wrote. "But even if Seth Lugo is likely to opt out of the final year of his three-year, $45 million deal after the season, last year's AL Cy Young Award runner-up is too good of a fit for the Astros to pass up.
"And the small-budget Royals probably can't afford to just let him walk in the offseason, even if it comes after he declines a qualifying offer."
Lugo is looked at as an expiring pitcher because it's very unlikely he opts into the option on his contract for 2026. Last season, the righty was a Cy Young contender in the AL and only lost out on the award because of Tarik Skubal's incredible season.
This season, Lugo has been solid again. He's one of the top pitchers in the league, and he's done so quietly. The Astros could cut ties with a few top prospects to land Lugo before looking to sign him to a contract extension in the offseason.

Former LSU star Paul Skenes named starting pitcher for National League in All-Star game

The National League named former LSU baseball star Paul Skenes its starting pitcher for the 2025 All-Star Game. It is Skenes' second time earning the distinction. The Pittsburgh Pirates' right-hander started last year's All-Star game ahead of winning the National League's Rookie of the Year award. Skenes is currently the betting favorite for the National League's Cy Young award, given to the best pitcher. In his second year of professional baseball, the ex-LSU hurler is putting together a standout season. Skenes' 2.01 ERA leads the National League. He has 131 strikeouts and a 0.93 WHIP through 121 innings pitched, all of which are top five in the National League. Through 20 starts in 2025, Skenes has surrendered over three runs just twice. In his most recent outing, he eclipsed his 300th career strikeout. It took him just 43 starts to reach the milestone, making him the first Pirates pitcher and one of 17 MLB pitchers all-time to do so. Skenes takes the mound for the All-Star game in Atlanta, GA, on Tuesday at 7 PM CT.

Where is Jace LaViolette going in MLB draft? Mock projections for Texas A&M slugger

This time last year, Texas A&M baseball's Jace LaViolette looked to be a projected first-round pick in the 2025 MLB Draft after a breakout sophomore season in which he helped the Aggies to a runner-up finish in the 2024 College World Series. However, that isn't necessarily the case a year later. The 6-foot-6 left-handed slugger had a down season this past year for the Aggies, as he saw a decline in his production from 2024 with a .258 batting average at the plate with just 61 RBIs and 18 home runs. LaViolette's season for the Aggies has seen his name slide on MLB draft boards. REQUIRED READING: MLB mock draft 2025: Who's going No. 1? Final breakdown of top prospects Another reason for LaViolette's slide in the draft has to do with some injury uncertainty after breaking his left hand on May 22 vs. Auburn in the SEC baseball tournament. After sitting out the remainder of the Aggies' second-round win after injuring his hand, LaViolette was in the lineup the next day as a designated hitter. Here's a look at Laviolette's latest MLB draft projections: Jace LaViolette MLB mock draft projections Despite sustaining a significant hand injury in the SEC baseball tournament, LaViolette is still considered a first-round draft pick going into Day 1 of the MLB draft on July 13 by draft experts. He is ranked as the No. 24 prospect in the 2025 MLB Draft class by The Athletic's Keith Law. Here's a closer look at where experts have LaViolette going in the first round, including their evaluations of him: Here's what USA TODAY's Gabe Lacques wrote about LaViolette going to the Astros: "He's going to be a great value somewhere, probably, as Laviolette faded from top three talk after a season slowed by contact issues, slumps and health. Wouldn't be surprising if someone jumped on him sooner thanks to his elite raw power." Here's what MLB Pipeline's Jim Callis wrote about LaViolette going to the Brewers: "LaViolette entered 2025 as a potential No. 1 overall pick and the Brewers never would have expected a shot at him before his up-and-down junior season." Here's what Law wrote about LaViolette going to the Astros: "The Astros seem more inclined to take a college hitter here, although they could be one of the buyers on late-rising pitcher Gage Wood, and I know they're very high on prep hitter Cooper Flemming, who'd be a reach here but won't get to their next pick at 95."
