Bihar first state to have below 1,200 voters at all polling stations. 96% voters covered in SIR: Election Commission
Bihar is going to assembly polls later this year.
As per Bihar Special Intensive Revision of the voter list order issued on June 24, 2025, the earlier ceiling of 1,500 voters at each polling station had been revised to 1,200 voters for each polling station.
"After adding 12,817 new polling stations, the total number of polling stations in Bihar will go up to 90,712 from the earlier 77,895. This major achievement of Bihar is to be followed by other States/UTs," the poll panel said in a statement.
The election commission also said that poll officials (CEO/DEOs/EROs/BLOs) have held meetings with the representatives of all political parties and have shared detailed lists of the 29.62 lakh electors whose forms have not been received so far and also of the nearly 43.93 lakh electors who were not found at their addresses.
'All the 12 major political parties have also been requested to connect with these remaining electors, through their District Presidents and nearly 1.5 lakh BLAs. This is to ensure that the entire election machinery, including the political parties, works together in a mission mode so that no eligible elector is left out from the draft Electoral Roll to be published on August 01, 2025,' the statement said.
The Election Commission also said that from August 1, 2025 any member of the public can file objections for any additions/deletions/rectifications in Draft Electoral Rolls, in accordance with the SIR order dated June 24.

Opposition paralyses House again over Bihar rolls
Opposition paralyses House again over Bihar rolls NEW DELHI: Proceedings of both Houses of Parliament were disrupted for the fifth consecutive day Friday as opposition kept up its demand for a discussion on SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar, despite repeated assurances from the Chair that govt was ready for all discussions. Both the Houses failed to transact Question Hour and later Zero Hour before it was adjourned for the day due to ruckus caused by protesting MPs from opposition benches who assembled in the well of the House and shouted slogans against govt. RS deputy chairman Harivansh said he received 28 notices seeking suspension of business to discuss SIR, Bengali migrant issues, and India-UK FTA. Similar notices were received in LS but not admitted by the Speaker. Opposition escalated its protest against SIR with the MPs marching from Gandhi statue to main entrance of the Parliament building, shouting slogans and seeking a roll back of SIR. The climax came when Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge led the MPs, including Dharmendra Yadav of SP and Rahul Gandhi, in tearing of the symbolic SIR in the form of a red card and dumping it in a dustbin placed in the middle of the gathering. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Up to 70% off | Libas Purple Days Sale Libas Undo Kharge said SIR is RSS design to rob SC/STs, OBCs, minorities and the poor of their right to vote. In LS, before adjourning the House for the day, BJP made a point with Jagdambika Pal in the Chair rebuking opposition members for not taking up matters important to their constituents. He told them that they are not serious about even taking up private members' bills, which have the same importance as the bills brought by govt, which are discussed by members in the House. The House was finally adjourned till Monday. While Pal continued to persuade the protesting MPs to go back to their respective seats and allow discussion on the private members' bill, Meghwal mentioned 'The Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of Goa Bill, 2024'. A bill concerning STs should be taken up for discussion, he said, and asked: "Are they against STs?". Pal told opposition MPs to desist from disrupting proceedings. "The Speaker has taken the initiative," he said referring to Om Birla's meeting with opposition members for running of the House, assuring them of taking up for discussion all issues raised by them. "The whole week has been washed out. People of the country have some expectations, but you don't want this House to run," Pal told the protesting MPs as he adjourned the House.

TMC seeks timeline for talks on SIR, Sindoor
Kolkata: Trinamool Congress on Friday sought a fixed timeline from the Centre for discussions on Bihar's special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and Operation Sindoor. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, the party's deputy leader in Lok Sabha, made the demand during an all-party meeting convened by Speaker Om Birla where Union ministers Arjun Meghwal and Kiren Rijiju were present. Dastidar said the Speaker informed her that discussion on Operation Sindoor would begin Monday but did not commit to a timeframe to discuss SIR. According to her, the Speaker cited a UPA-era rule that stated: "EC, being an autonomous body, its functions cannot be discussed on the floor of the House." "Discussions on Operation Sindoor are important. We too want to know where the perpetrators went. But the discussions must include SIR. The UPA logic doesn't hold because EC has now become a BJP party office," Dastidar told reporters outside Parliament. "SIR is a dark shadow on our democracy. Overnight, eligible voters are being struck off voter rolls. This hits (at) the core of our democracy," she added. EC has a mandate to conduct elections as a constitutional body, but we cannot allow genuine citizens who are voters to be removed." "We will talk to like-minded parties. We should also gherao the EC. It is operating like a BJP branch office. They are depriving people of their rights. This is not just about Bihar. It's a dangerous ploy nationally. We want Parliament to run; every opposition party wants Parliament to run. We want discussion under any rule on SIR. If the govt does not allow that, it means they want to disrupt the House," O'Brien said. Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra, who had moved the SC on this issue, told ANI: "Such a thing has never happened in the history of India. The EC, which is a constitutional body, is working as a branch of the BJP. CEC speaks like a spokesperson of the BJP... In 24 hours, the number of untraceable voters went from over 11,000 to more than 1 lakh... If the home ministry is trying to say that there are 56 lakh illegal voters in Bihar, where did they come from?"

Drop SIR: Stalin to Centre
Chennai: Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin has demanded that the Union govt drop the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, comparing the exercise to 'playing with fire'. In a social media post on Friday, Stalin said the SIR was being misused to erase voters from disadvantaged and dissenting communities, so that the outcome could be tilted in favour of the BJP . "This is not about reform. It is about engineering outcomes," he said. He said what had happened in Bihar during the SIR was a telling example of the potential threat posed by the exercise. That is why it is trying to stop them from voting altogether," he said. "If you (BJP) cannot defeat us, you seek to delete us. Don't play with fire. Any threat to our democracy will be met with firm resistance," he added. Stalin said that TN will raise its voice against SIR with full force. "Democracy belongs to the people. It will not be stolen," Stalin said in the post with the tag 'Quit SIR.' Meanwhile, CPM state secretary P Shanmugam has written to chief electoral officer Archana Patnaik asking her to convene an all-party meeting to discuss SIR. Stating that there are reports about preparatory work for commencing SIR in TN too, Shanmugam said the Election Commission of India should listen to views of political parties and then proceed with electoral roll revision.
